Through both summer and winter – seersucker suits or cashmere scarves – the the Paoli Local was so popular with mainline business commuters that in 1915, the Pennsylvania electrified 20 miles of track and introduced MU operation, cars that were modified P-54 steam suburban coaches. Noted for the unique look of their round owl eye windows in the vestibules, the MP-54s operated both as coaches and combination Passenger-Baggage MUs.

This powerful 1600-HP Alco workhorse of the early 1950s was popular with railroads because of its versatility.

The Erie-Lackawanna RS-3 #933 was inherited from the Erie Railroad and used in both passenger and freight service. The Boston & Maine #1538, decorated
in its original Minuteman scheme, was used primarily as a road switcher.

Pennsylvania Broadway Limited - Speed And Luxury With Style
When launched in 1912 the Broadway Limited name associated the train with the glamour of Manhattan's theater district, just a block from Penn Station. Soon, wanting to soften the New York image, the Pennsy began advertising the train in other cities as the “Broad Way Limited" claiming the name derived from the railroad's broad four-track right of way. That bit of marketing spin has stuck.

Either way, Broadway Limited became synonymous with speed, luxury and style, never more so than the decade from 1938 to 1948 when Raymond Loewy's streamlined tuscan and gold design decorated a new passenger fleet. Loewy's complementary K-4 locomotive debuted in bronze for the 1936 World's Fair, then was painted Brunswick Green for the Broadway Limited.
