Is this English? Diacritics in British and American English

Did you know that there are a significant number of words that have diacritics?  Do you know what diacritics are? 

American, as well as British, English contains tons of foreign words which contain diacritics (accents,  cedillas,  tilde, circumflexes or macrons) i.e. résumé,  coup d'état,  échappé,  à blanc,  à la française.  Most, if not all, of the words presented on Englishbegin.com Freaky English: Is this English?  Diacritics in English can be found in any unabridged American or British English dictionary.   It should be noted that the vast majority of words in English, native or imported, DO NOT contain accents, cedillas, tilde, circumflexes or macrons. As noted, English does contain a significant number of words which do have accents and other kinds of marking; however, the diacritic on a word such as the Spanish word habló does not play the same role in English as it does in Spanish.  In Spanish, the accented ó is used for pronunciation.  Such a structure does not exist in English.   Normally an English-speaker learns to put the stress on one syllable versus the other by sound. If a particular letter has a number of different sounds, there is no marking to indicate that. One of the reasons that English has such a thing as a homograph (two or more words  which are spelt the same but pronounced differently) is that English has no markings to indicate when two words which are identical in spelling are pronounced differently because different syllables are stressed. So, why does English have diacritics?  With only very few exception, almost all the words which contain diacritics are relatively recent  imports from other languages.  They are imported into the language as they are originally spelt and pronounced in their original language.  If they have an accent of tilde in their original language, they have one in English.  The reason that many English-speakers do not know these words is that the majority of them are learnt either in school or, in the case of highly educated parents or caretakers, in the home.  The standardized tests which students are obligated to take to graduate from primary and high school, are full of words from this general area of English.  The SAT, ACT, DAT,   GRE, HSPT, LSAT, MAT, MCAT, MOAT, PCAT, SSAT, TOEFL, TOEIC and TWE test one’s knowledge of those Latin- and Greek-based words which are taught, and learnt, in school rather than in the home.
