Every language has its difficulties, especially in the area of pronunciation. For many Spanish-speakers, because of the version of Spanish which they speak, it is extremely difficult to NOT pronounce the b and v the same. Many of these same speakers also have problems in distinguishing the letter s from z. For some non-native speakers of English, like native Japanese-speakers, it is very difficult to distinguish the l and the r. This should not be hard to understand for English-speakers. The letters l and r are very easy to confuse since the sound of both letters take place almost in the same place of the mouth. Can you easily hear but much more importantly pronounce the difference between the following minimal pairs: allows vs. arouse, bland vs. brand, clamp vs. cramp, close vs. crows, flame vs. frame, glow vs. grow.
