A Unique, One of a Kind Piece that Exudes Pride of Ownership! Dichroic Glass: Also known as "Dichro" for Short; Dichroic glass is a glass containing multiple micro-layers of metal oxides, with a total thickness of three to five millionths of an inch, which gives the glass dichroic optical properties. Dichroism has two related but distinct meanings in optics. A dichroic material is either one which causes visible light to be split up into distinct beams of different wavelengths (colors), or one in which light rays having different polarizations are absorbed by different amounts. The original meaning of dichroic, from the Greek dikhroos, two-colored, refers to any optical device which can split a beam of light into two beams with differing wavelengths. The second meaning of dichroic refers to a material in which light in different polarization states traveling through it experience a varying absorption. The term came about because of early observations of the effect in crystals such as tourmaline. In these crystals, the strength of the dichroic effect varies strongly with the wavelength of the light, making them appear to have different colors when viewed with light having differing polarizations. Dichroic Glass was created by NASA and is considered the most expensive glass material in the world. About Fused Dichro Glass: Fused glass is a term used to describe glass that has been fired (heat-processed) in a kiln at a range of high temperatures from 1100ºF to 1500ºF. There are 3 main distinctions for temperature application and the resulting effect on the glass. Firing temperatures at 1100ºF-1250ºF is called Slumping. Firing in temperatures of 1250ºF-1350ºF is considered "Tack Fusing". Firing the glass at the higher spectrum of this range of 1350ºF- 1500ºF) is a "Full Fuse". All of these techniques can be applied to one glass work in separate firings to add depth, relief and shape. While the precise origins of glass fusing techniques are not known with certainty, archeological evidence indicates Egyptians were familiar with the basic techniques around circa 2000 BC. Although this date is generally accepted, some historians argue that the earliest fusing techniques were first developed by the Romans, who were much more creatively skilled glassworkers. While glass working enjoyed a revival during the Renaissance, fusing was largely ignored, but began to regain popularity, particularly in the U.S. during the 1960s. Basically, thin strips of glass are cut-up, sandwiched on top of each other, put in a kiln and melted together, but its not all that simple. Aside from multiple heating cycles, compatibility of each glass piece used for fusing is very important. Each type or piece of glass made reacts differently with its Coefficient of Expansion (COE). All of the glass pieces used for fusing must have the same or a very close COE to fuse together permanently when heated and cooled. Each fused glass piece design goes through a series of steps including design considerations, kiln firings and cold work, which always results in no two pieces ever looking alike, even if the process was exactly duplicated step by step as the previous design. Most contemporary fusing methods involve stacking, or layering thin sheets of glass, often using different colors or dichroic glass to create patterns. The stack is then placed inside the kiln and then heated through a series of ramps (rapid heating cycles) and soaks (holding the temperature at a specific point) until the separate pieces begin to bond together. The longer the kiln is held at the maximum temperature the more thoroughly the stack will fuse, eventually softening and rounding the edges of the original shape. Once the desired effect has been achieved at the maximum desired temperature, the kiln temperature will be brought down to avoid devitrification. It is then allowed to cool slowly over a specified time, soaking at specified temperature ranges, which are essential to the process. This prevents uneven cooling and breakage and produces a strong finished product. This cooling takes place normally for a period of 10-12 hours in 3 stages. The first stage, the rapid cool period, is meant to place the glass into the upper end of the annealing range 960ºF. The second stage, the anneal soak at 960ºF, is meant to equalize the temperature at the core and the surface of the glass at 960ºF relieving the stress between those areas. The last stage, once all areas have had time to reach a consistent temperature, is the final journey to room temperature. The kiln is slowly brought down over the course of 2 hours to 700ºF, soaked for 2 hours at 700ºF, down again to 500ºF which ends the firing schedule. The glass will remain in the unopened kiln until it reaches room temperature. Between firings, each piece is meticulously cold worked . In this step, the glass is cut, sanded, sand blasted and finally cleaned. The piece is then given its final shape. This is done by heating the glass in the kiln to between 1100-1300º Fahrenheit so the softened glass falls into a mold. Just as in the initial firing, the appropriate steps must be taken to heat and cool the glass in a manner that limits stress to the piece. Care Handling: Fused glass can be cleaned with room temperature water and dish soap and/or wiped down with a spray of isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. Avoid using window cleaners as they can leave a film that detracts from the glass’ overall shine and appearance.
