A Unique, One of a Kind Artistic Creation that Exudes Pride of Ownership! About Humpback Whales: When preparing for a deep dive, humpbacks will arch (hump) their back and raise their tail flukes above water. It is this pronounced arching of the back that has earned the humpback whale its common name. A humpback whale's tail is so powerful that it only takes one or two thrusts to propel the entire body out of the water. The undersides of their tail flukes are as distinctive as our fingerprints, and range from all black to all white, with a whole array of splotching and scarring in between. The trailing edges of the flukes have a slight "S" curve and many knobby scallops and average 15 feet in width. Hawai`i is truly a unique place. The islands are like emerald specks in the center of a vast ocean of indigo blue, populated with rare plants, unique animals and warm people who always offer a friendly "aloha." The Hawaiian Islands have at their heart the only Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary dedicated to whales and their habitat. Na Kohola (Humpback Whales and the Hawai`i State Mammal) are found in all of the world's oceans, although they generally prefer near shore and near-island habitats for both feeding and breeding. A large percentage of the North Pacific migrate to the main Hawaiian islands during the winter months, November through May, each year. The round-trip distance they travel during this annual migration is approximately 6,000 miles, one of the longest migration distances of any animal species. During their stay in Hawai`i, they do not feed, but rely upon stored energy. Near the islands, the whales devote most of their time to mating and giving birth to their calves. Female humpbacks are also very nurturing mothers. They stay in close contact with their young while on the breeding grounds, suckle their calves for up to a year, and defend and protect them from predators. We are lucky to visit the whales in their nursery, in such a beautiful setting. Because the humpback calves are born here, they are truly a "child of the land", or "kama`aina." While visiting the islands, kohola have become renowned for their various mysterious whale songs and acrobatic displays (dramatic behaviors with their pectoral fins, tails and flukes and conducting spectacular breaches). It is estimated that approximately 2,000 to 5,000 individuals come here each year. The annual migration of the humpback whales, from their summer home in icy Alaskan waters to their Hawaiian winter destination, is a miraculous feat, but how they find their way remains a mystery. The modern day name for the uninhabited island seen off the coast of Wailea, Maui is Kaho`olawe, though ancient Hawaiian chants mention its name as Kanaloa. Kanaloa was a primordial god from antiquities, and was the deity for the ocean, its animals, fresh water, salt water, and all the growth on earth and in the sea. To Hawaiians, the whale is a representation of Kanaloa. The Kohola (Whale) was well known to the early Hawaiians as they are mentioned in an ancient Hawaiian Chant of Creation and in Pauku, or poetic passages. The whale is the largest ocean form, and a majestic manifestation of Kanaloa. From the ivory of this creature, the highly prized niho palaoa was worn by the Ali`i (Chiefs) of high rank (Whales were never hunted by Hawaiians as they were considered sacred creatures). The scarcity and beauty of the niho lei palaoa and its connection to Kanaloa brought mana (spiritual power) to the carver, to the pendant itself, and eventually to the wearer of the pendant. The Ali`i possessed this kinolau or "body form" of this great god, would themselves acquire the characteristics, intelligence and knowledge of the god. The Kohola is revered in modern day Hawai`i not only by the thousands of whale watchers, but by the native Hawaiians who still consider it as one of Kanaloa`s magnificent creations. Dichroic Glass: Also known as "Dichro" for Short; Dichroic glass is a glass containing multiple micro-layers of metal oxides, with a total thickness of three to five millionths of an inch, which gives the glass dichroic optical properties. Dichroism has two related but distinct meanings in optics. A dichroic material is either one which causes visible light to be split up into distinct beams of different wavelengths (colors), or one in which light rays having different polarizations are absorbed by different amounts. The original meaning of dichroic, from the Greek dikhroos, two-colored, refers to any optical device which can split a beam of light into two beams with differing wavelengths. The second meaning of dichroic refers to a material in which light in different polarization states traveling through it experience a varying absorption. The term came about because of early observations of the effect in crystals such as tourmaline. In these crystals, the strength of the dichroic effect varies strongly with the wavelength of the light, making them appear to have different colors when viewed with light having differing polarizations.
