About the White-Spotted Hermit Crab: This beautiful crustacean is the second largest hermit crab in Hawai`i and one of the world's rarest. The upper parts of the body are buff or creamy-white in color, the carapace is marked with darker orange areas and lines, and the under surface of the body and legs is almost white in color. The front left claw is larger than the right claw. The legs of this crab are covered over their upper and outer surfaces with spines and tufts of stiff orange hair. The antennae are a bright orange-red color. The body of this crab measures more than 8-12 inches in length. At present this crab is known to occur only in Hawai`i and Madagascar, although it undoubtedly occurs over much of the intervening area. This crab is rarely seen because it inhabits the deeper water on the outside of the reef. Specimens from Hawai`i are usually captured at depths beyond 100 ft. This species typically inhabits the Giant Tun, Triton?s Trumpet shells or similarly large unoccupied shells. There are about five hundred known species of hermit crabs in the world, most of which are aquatic and live in saltwater at depths ranging from shallow coral reefs and shorelines to deep sea bottoms. There are over six species of hermit crabs found in Hawai`i, each is quite distinguishable by the colors of its eyes, antennae, legs, and claws. Like all arthropods, hermit crabs have jointed limbs and segmented bodies. As members of the Subphylum Crustacea, the most prominent arthropod group in the ocean, hermit crabs share several features with their closest relatives, the shrimp, lobsters, and true crabs: they all have three body regions, a head, thorax (mid-body), and abdomen; 2 pairs of antennae; crushing mouth parts called mandibles; and a hard external skeleton. Hermit crabs and their relatives are called anomurans and are different from the "true crabs" because they have a reduced and softened abdomen. Hermit crabs protect this vulnerable part of their body by using an empty snail shell as extra armor. The hermit crab's abdomen is curved to fit the shell and small hook-like limbs anchor the crab's body within the shell. Hermit crabs have 5 pairs of legs, the first pair is modified into claws and the last two pairs helps them hold onto the shell. When a hermit crab outgrows its shell, it must find another larger one. While hermit crabs may pull one another from desirable shells, it is rare for them to kill a snail to obtain a shell. When a hermit crab locates a shell, it carefully checks the inside and outside of the new prospect with its antennae and claws. Then, releasing its anchoring limbs from the old shell, it slips its abdomen out of the old shell and into the new one. If the fit is good, the hermit is on its way, if not, it quickly transfers back to the old shell. Despite the protection of their borrowed shells, they are preyed upon by larger hermit crabs, box crabs, octopus, as well as wrasses and other reef fishes with jaws for crushing shelled invertebrates. Hermit crabs only have a hard exoskeleton on the appendages and must conceal their soft body parts within empty gastropod shells. They will exchange shells as they grow and may need to fight other crabs to do so. They are especially active at night and may be seen by the hundreds in shallow tide pools. Common in shallow and deeper water. Only Hawaiian specimens have orange bands, others regions are turquoise. A number of other species, most notably king crabs, have abandoned seashells for a free-living life; these species have forms which are more similar to true crabs. The Functional Beauty of the Nautilus: Nautilus, from the Greek word for "Sailor", is the common name of any marine creatures of the cephalopod family Nautilidae. Having survived relatively unchanged for millions of years, Nautiluses represent the only living members of the subclass Nautiloidea, and are often considered to be "living fossils." Living Nautilus are now found only in the waters of the tropical Western Pacific, where they live in a poorly-known marine environment, the deep slopes of coral reefs. Capable of migrating from depths of 1,500 feet to within 300 feet or less of the surface, Nautilus have a depth range seen in few other marine organisms and seem capable of tolerating dramatic changes in both temperature and pressure. The external shell of the Nautilus is produced by mantle tissue as in their distant relatives, the snails. But, unlike snails, the Nautilus shell is divided into compartments (about four in newly hatched specimens, 30 in mature individuals), and the animal occupies only the outer-most "living chamber." As the Nautilus grows, its body moves forward in the enlarged shell and produces a wall to seal off older chambers. In contrast, snail shells are not usually compartmented and the snail's body extends back to the smallest parts of the spiral shell The Nautilus shell protects and supports the soft body of this mollusk; the animal can withdraw completely into the shell and close the opening with its leathery hood. But the shell's most important function is providing this swimming animal with neutral buoyancy. The older, sealed chambers of the shell contain gas which compensates for the weight of the animal's tissues and shell, keeping the Nautilus neutrally buoyant so that it neither sinks nor floats and can move freely in the water. Nautilus swim in a see-saw motion generated by "jet propulsion." They alternately pull water into the mantle cavity within the shell and blow it out the muscular siphon beneath the tentacles. By directing the jet of water with the flexible siphon, the Nautilus can swim forward, backward or sideways. Like many animals that live in open water or above the reef, Nautilus show a form of camouflage coloration called countershading. The upper surface of the shell is darkened by irregular stripes that mask its outline when viewed from above, and the light underside of the shell blends with the water surface when viewed from below.
