Symbolism: The Color Red symbolizes health, strength, physical energy, sex, passion, courage and protection. It is associated with blood, birth, and intense emotions. Red symbolizes energy, excitement, strength, power. It is the color of love. When good fortune arrives it's called a "red-letter day". Coral is a symbol of Life Force Energy. Its energy helps overcome lethargy and depression, dispels foolishness, nervousness, fear and panic, guards against accidents and theft. It represents the ability to allow for flow and change in ones life and quiets the emotions. Helps one to connect with the quality of the mystic within. Makes difficult communications easily understood. It also symbolizes attachment; believed to be an amulet against natural disasters, disease, bad luck, and jealous friends. The Honu: Protector, Longevity, Peace, Humility, Fertility, Spirit Within. The honu is considered a symbol of the island (the word for land is 'Aina honua). The honu are featured in Hawaiian mythology, petroglyphs and as 'aumakua (personal family gods). An 'aumakua could manifest itself in varying forms such as a shark, a sea turtle, a hawk, a lizard, a pueo (owl) or any other animal, plant or mineral. Members of the family were said to recognize their 'aumakua, no matter what form it chose, whether it be an insect on land or a crab in the ocean the following day. The ancestral god might appear in a dream to furnish guidance or spiritual strength in difficult times. When a fisherman or craftsman was especially successful, credit was often given to his 'aumakua for intervening with the principal gods to impart the Mana (Spiritual Power) that enabled an earthly being to develop such skill. Many a canoe paddler has told of being lost or in danger between the islands, only to be guided by his Honu 'aumakua to a safe landing. The turtle is a revered symbol throughout Polynesia, depicting the wisdom that comes with age and the wanderer or traveler. It is said to represent a very wise person with a love for the sea and a passion for travelling and exploring the wonders of the world. It is also like the Albatross in that its skill in navigating the wide ocean is legendary.Design: Petroglyph Honu; Cutout, Openwork, Hand-Cut Framed Coral Inlays, High Polish Silver and Smooth Surface Polished Coral Finish; Measures: Approx. About Coral: Coral is the skeletal remains of a marine animal, the polyp corallicum, and is mainly composed of calcium carbonate. Since Corals are calcified skeletons of sea creatures, they grow in formations resembling the branches of a tree. Located at depths between 10-1600 feet, coral can be found along the shores of Japan, Hawaii, Australia, the western Mediterranean, Philippines, Taiwan, Bay of Biscay, Canary Islands and Malaysian Archipelago. Most coral used for jewelry comes from the Mediterranean Sea or from the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii, Japan and Taiwan. Like many other gemstones made from rock or organic material, coral comes in many beautiful colors including blue, red, yellow, black, white, gold, orange, and pink. Unlike other precious stones, coral has a smooth brilliant surface when sanded and polished to take on a smooth, shiny luster. White coral is the most plentiful color of coral. The most sought after and rare corals are red, black, pink (aka angel skin) and gold. With characteristics such as its intense and permanent coloration and glossiness, precious coral jewelry remains very popular. There are several types of Hawaiian precious coral black, pink, and gold. Hawaiian coral is considered one of the world’s finest and displaying more lustrous qualities than any other types of coral found in the world. Deep-Sea Bamboo Coral: Bamboo Corals (Family Isididae), is a family of mostly deep-sea coral of the phylum Cnidaria. It is a commonly recognized inhabitant of the deep sea, due to the clearly articulated skeletons of the species. Relatively little is known about bamboo coral. The skeletons of bamboo coral are made up of calcium carbonate in the form of tree-like branches alternating with joint-like nodes or axes composed of gorgonin protein. The alternation of the bony structures with the smaller gorgonin parts give the bamboo coral a finger-like appearance similar to that of the bamboo plant on land. Bamboo corals grow on top of deep-water sea mounts whose distribution ranges in the Pacific Ocean between California and Alaska, and Hawaii to Australia. Recently, a mission funded by NOAA discovered seven new species of bamboo coral in the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, lying primarily in deep waters off the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Bamboo Corals are naturally white to orange in color and are typically color enhanced and polished to use in jewelry settings.
