The honu is considered a symbol of the island (the word for land is 'Aina honua). They have a saying "land is like a turtle, as it moves on", meaning that it passes slowly but inexorably from owner to heir. The honu are featured in Hawaiian mythology, petroglyphs and as 'Aumakua (personal family gods). An 'Aumakua could manifest itself in varying forms such as a shark, a sea turtle, a hawk, a lizard, a pueo (owl) or any other animal, plant or mineral. Members of the family were said to recognize their 'Aumakua, no matter what form it chose, whether it be an insect on land or a crab in the ocean the following day. The ancestral god might appear in a dream to furnish guidance or spiritual strength in difficult times. When a fisherman or craftsman was especially successful, credit was often given to his 'Aumakua for intervening with the principal gods to impart the Mana (Spiritual Power) that enabled an earthly being to develop such skill. Many a canoe paddler has told of being lost or in danger between the islands, only to be guided by his Honu 'Aumakua to a safe landing. The turtle is a revered symbol thoughout Polynesia, depicting the wisdom that comes with age and the wanderer or traveller. It is said to represent a very wise person wtih a love for the sea and a passion for travelling and exploring the wonders of the world. It is also like the Albatross in that its skill in navigating the wide ocean is legendary. The honu is a powerful metaphor of the connection between people, land, and ocean. Hawaiian legend holds that the hero Aiai created honu by drawing marks upon a rock near the water turning it into a turtle. Because it is part earth, the creatures must return to land to lay their eggs. The honu has a place in myth and legend as a messenger, a monster sent to attack enemies, a living canoe that transports lovers to each other, and even as the foundation of some of the islands. A famous hula imitates the thrashing and digging motions of a turtle laying her eggs. Turtle imagery appears in rock art, tapa patterns, and in string games. Encounters with the creature are counted as the highlight of many visitor’s trip to the park. The ancient connection between land and sea that the honu represents is still strong today. In Chinese mythology, the sea turtle represents wisdom. In Hawaii, legend tells about a green sea turtle, Kauila, who could change herself into a girl to watch over the children playing at Punalu'u Beach on the Big Island. It's also said that turtles were the guides for the first voyagers to Hawaii. The Honu'ea, or Hawksbill Turtle is an endangered species and is protected by law. It is illegal to approach a Hawksbill Turtle any closer than 15 ft. The Hawksbill is native to Hawai'i. Hawai'i is one of the few places in the world where the Hawksbill population is slowly growing, thanks mostly to the conservation efforts undertaken on the Big Island. The Hawksbill nests in the months between May and January and the entire process of building the nest to the laying of the eggs can occur within one to three hours. You can see the Hawksbill several places on the Big Island. They frequent portions of the Hāmākua coast, but the best place to see the Hawksbill is the Punalu'u Black Sand Beach near Pāhala in the Ka'ū district. This beach is a protected sanctuary of the Hawksbill and is a favored nesting ground. You can find several turtles enjoying the sun on the beach year round, and during nesting time there is even greater activity. Hawaiian Turtle Goddess, The Legend of Kauila at Punalu'u: Hawaiian legend, as reported by historian Mary Kawena Pukui, tells the story of a mystical sea turtle named Kauila, born on the black sandy shores of Punalu'u, in the district of Ka’ū on the Big Island of Hawaii. Kauila was born the daughter of two supernatural sea turtles, the mother named Honupo'okea (White-headed Green Sea Turtle) and the father named Honu`ea (Hawaiian Hawksbill Sea Turtle). Honupo'okea came out of the ocean to give birth to a very special egg, the color and shape similar to a piece of Kauila wood. She buried her special egg in the sand to be warmed by the Hawaiian sun until ready to hatch. Before returning to the sea, Honupo'okea and Honu`ea used their flippers to dig deep into the earth forming a fresh water pond near their precious nest. After a time, Honupo'okea returned to the black sandy beach to wait for her special egg to hatch. Soon the egg cracked open and a beautiful magical baby turtle emerged named Kauila as she took on the same dark and glossy appearance like Kauila wood. Mother and daughter made their way to the fresh water pond to live until Kauila was old enough to be on her own. Kauila made Punalu'u her home and would often rest at the bottom of the fresh water spring that her parents had made. People called it Ka wai hu o Kauila (the rising water of Kauila). The keiki (children) of the Ka'ū district would come to play in the spring, and if they saw air bubbles from her breath rising from its depths to the surface of the pond, they knew that Kauila was sleeping. Kauila loved all children and would sometimes magically manifest herself into a little girl so that she could play with and watch over the children on the black sandy shores. The people of Ka’ū cherish Kauila for her fresh water pond who gave them fresh drinking water and for ensuring the safety of their keiki. As time continues on, the black sand bubbles, as cool mountain water from Mauna Loa, percolates through the porous lava rocks. This was Kauila's gift to bring fresh water for the people of Punalu'u. Long ago Hawaiians would dive to the floor of the bay to collect the fresh water in gourds. Hence the name Punalu'u, which means diving spring. Honu, or green sea turtles, still come to the black sand beach of Punalu'u on the Big Island. They can be seen grazing on seaweed in the surf or basking in the warm sun, oblivious to the people that gather to watch them. At night the rare honu 'ea, or hawksbill turtle, has been known to nest in the area, just as Honupo'okea did so long ago. Local children continue to delight and visit to eagerly count the honu in the bay, and an occasional basking turtle. Their attention is always drawn to the pahoehoe tide pools, and the chilly springs that arise within. As children playfully build dams to channel the freshwater flowing seaward, it is not difficult to feel Kauila's mana (spiritual power) and presence around you knowing she brought a gift to the Hawaiians and she serves as a guardian over the keiki, as she has done for many centuries. Dichroic Glass: Also known as "Dichro" for Short; Dichroic glass is a glass containing multiple micro-layers of metal oxides, with a total thickness of three to five millionths of an inch, which gives the glass dichroic optical properties. Dichroism has two related but distinct meanings in optics. A dichroic material is either one which causes visible light to be split up into distinct beams of different wavelengths (colors), or one in which light rays having different polarizations are absorbed by different amounts. The original meaning of dichroic, from the Greek dikhroos, two-colored, refers to any optical device which can split a beam of light into two beams with differing wavelengths. The second meaning of dichroic refers to a material in which light in different polarization states traveling through it experience a varying absorption. The term came about because of early observations of the effect in crystals such as tourmaline. In these crystals, the strength of the dichroic effect varies strongly with the wavelength of the light, making them appear to have different colors when viewed with light having differing polarizations.
