About Tiger Sharks: There are about fourty species of sharks that live in Hawaiian waters, ranging in size from the deep-water pygmy shark (about 8 inches) to the whale shark (up to 50 feet or more). About eight species are somewhat common in near shore waters. The most frequently encountered are the whitetip reef, sandbar, scalloped hammerhead, and occasionally tiger. The tiger shark, Galeocerdo cuvier, is the second largest predatory shark after the Great White Shark. Mature sharks average 11 ft-14 ft long and weigh 850-2000 lbs. It is found in many of the tropical and temperate regions of the world's oceans, and is especially common around islands in the central Pacific. This shark is a solitary hunter, usually hunting at night. Its name is derived from the dark stripes down its body, which fade as the shark matures. The tiger shark is a predator, known for eating a wide range of items. Its usual diet consists of fish, seals, birds, smaller sharks, squid, and turtles. They prefer the surface of the water and they're quite aggressive. Another unique feature of tiger sharks are their impressive formed teeth, which allows them to rip apart almost any prey. It is illegal to feed sharks in Hawai`i. Hawaiian Shark Myths and Legends: Surprisingly, the ancient Hawaiians gave the same name of "Niuhi" to both a tiger shark and a white shark. Many shark species found in Hawaiian waters were honored as being sacred and were even considered reincarnations of dead family members or `Aumakua. The Niuhi, however, were typically more feared than adored. Legends suggest that many kings living in the historical Hawaiian realm could acquire visions of future events by consuming the eyes of the Niuhi. It is said that even the mother of the most famous king of Hawaii, King Kamehameha asked for "Niuhi" eyes during her pregnancy believed to enhance the leadership qualities and bravery of the future king she was carrying. For the women of Hawai`i, eating shark flesh was considered kapu (taboo, forbidden) during the ancient days. Sharks are prominent in Hawaiian mythology, which contained many shark gods. There are stories of shark men who have shark jaws on their back. They could change form between shark and human at any time they desired. They believed that sharks were guardians of the sea. Kamohoali'i, the best known and revered of the shark gods, was the older and favored brother of Pele, and helped and journeyed with her to Hawai`i. He was able to take on all human and fish forms. A summit cliff on the crater of Kilauea is considered to be one of his most sacred spots. Hawaiians did kill sharks, but only for specific purposes. Given they used nothing more than a canoe and a spear or fishhook, they took sharks in small quantities and nothing was left to waste. Catching Niuhi was the game of chiefs; it was a dangerous sport and special techniques were used. Hawaiians used the teeth as cutting tools, added teeth to weapons, ate the meat of the shark, and used shark skin to stretch across ceremonial drums. Shark teeth, especially those of the fierce tiger and great white, were used to craft a variety of weapons, including war clubs and knives. However, in ancient times, families were careful not to eat certain forms of animal life if their 'Aumakua was thought to appear in that form. If they did, they knew the punishment could be as severe as death. Offerings of taro leaves with sincere prayers could reduce the anger of an offended 'Aumakua. An 'Aumakua was actually a dead ancestor's spirit that was deified into an entity that could be animate or inanimate (an animal, plant, rock or natural event). Though some view the practice as a religious one involving worship, most regard it as a continuation of an ancient belief system, a cultural practice that does not interfere with other religious beliefs. A revered scholar of Hawaiian culture once explained, "As gods and relatives in one, they give us strength when we are weak, warning when danger threatens, guidance in our bewilderment, inspiration in our arts. They are equally our judges, hearing our words and watching our actions, reprimanding us for error and punishing us for blatant offense." Another Hawaiian cultural specialist mentioned, "Our people conveyed spiritual importance to animal deities that were created to protect them and their life style. The most important is the shark, which is still held in reverence by the Hawaiian people today. From all the animal deities, the shark is the greatest 'Aumakua."
