About Koa Warriors and Warfare During Ancient Hawai`i: The history of Polynesian tribal Hawai`i traces back to 300-500 AD, (the exact time is still debated) with the first migrations of Polynesians, who journeyed across the South Pacific from the Marquesas in double-hulled canoes. By 850 AD, the seven main Hawaiian islands were occupied. A second wave of migration occurred circa 1100 AD from Tahiti, and a distinctive Hawaiian culture and tribal organization was well-established by 1400 AD. For centuries the Hawaiian Islands were divided into kingdoms, each ruled by the Ali`i (Chief, Chiefess, Royal Monarch, Ruler) who sought to extend their control over the others. The results were society strife with endemic warfare and a ruling class that saw warfare as a powerful and legitimate tool of diplomacy. As each Chief formed his (or her) territory into their best possible military machine, they also structured their society and the culture of the Hawaiians. What evolved through isolation in the vast Pacific and endless warfare was unique, amazing and terrible. These ancient warriors that battled in the warfare of the Hawaiian islands were of varied degrees of professionalism. They were celebrated for their ferocity and venerated for their discipline, knowledge and cunning abilities. Warriors were known as the Koa (Fearless Fighters), and gave their name to the Koa tree, whose hard wood provided many of their ferocious shark-toothed weapons, daggers and spears. The Koa Warriors were the elite Hawaiian forces who were highly disciplined war machines. They used a form of an ancient martial art callued Lua. In battle they wore feathered cloaks and gourd helmets for protection against lethal missiles. Their arsenal of weapons was varied, amazing and devastating. The 'Olohe Lua (Lua Masters) served as bodyguards to Chiefs. The most famous of all Lua Warriors, who later became a Hawaiian King, was Kamehameha I (1758-1819). Warriors generally fought in a Malo (Loincloth) with or without helmets. Nobles typically wore a cape slung over the arm to act as a shield, as well as crested helmets made of wicker or gourds, which provided some protection against sling stones. The original helmets used to be made from dried gourds carved into an open-face mask with a top crest made of a tough sedge/twigs called 'uki and/or real bird feathers and strips of tapa cloth or raffia fibers often hung from the bottom lower edges of the gourd to serve as a chin/throat guard. Aside from protection against sling stones, the Hawaiian Warriors would craft these helmets to put fear into their opponents during battle. These Hawaiian Warrior Helmets are really called Ma`kini (Gourd Masks used by Canoemen), Makaki`i (Mask, literally Image Face) or Mahi`ole (Feathered Helmets Worn by Chiefs and Royalty), and sometimes were referred to as Ikaika (Strong, Powerful) helmets from the Koa Warriors and Chiefs who worm them.
