About Seahorses: Seahorses are a genus (Hippocampus) of fish belonging to the family Syngnathidae, which also includes pipefish and leafy sea dragons. There are over 32 species of seahorse, mainly found in the shallow tropical and temperate waters of Hawai`i, Australia, the Caribbean, Brazil and similar warm-water locations throughout the world. They prefer to live in sheltered areas such as sea grass beds, coral reefs, or mangroves. These fish form territories, with males staying in about one square meter of their habitat while females range about one hundred times that area. They bob around in sea grass meadows, mangrove stands, and coral reefs where they are camouflaged by murky brown and gray patterns that blend into the sea grass backgrounds. During social moments or in unusual surroundings, seahorses turn bright colors. Their head is bent, almost at right angles to their body, their trunk is inherently curved and their fin-less tail is prehensile (grasping). They have no scales, few fins, no ribs and a thick external skeleton. A seahorse’s body is covered by bony plates that appear externally as a series of ridges and rings. The body can also be divided into three main sections: head, trunk, and tail. Seahorses are camouflage experts, changing color and growing skin filaments to blend in with their surroundings. Short-term color changes may also occur during courtship displays and daily greetings. Seahorses swim using the propulsive force of a quickly oscillating dorsal fin. They are more adapted to maneuverability than speed and primarily rely on camouflage to avoid detection. With their whimsical charm, seahorses inspire an almost universal reaction of wonder and delight. They are one of the most interesting and unique of all sea creatures. It is named a seahorse because its head resembles the head of a tiny horse. The scientific name is "Hippocampus", which comes from the Greek words meaning "horse" and "sea monster". Seahorses are one of the most magical and enchanting animals in the animal kingdom. They are the stars of fairy tales and legends. The seahorse is believed to cure many ailments in traditional Chinese Medicine. Not only does the seahorse have eyes that rotate 360% independent of the other, but the seahorse is the only animal in the entire animal kingdom in which the male has a true pregnancy! Seahorses reproduce in a unique way. The male of the species gives birth to live babies. The female deposits her eggs in his pouch and the male carries these eggs until they are ready to be born. Seahorses can bear up to 500 babies at one time. The baby seahorses (or ponies) often ride on their father's head or attached to other seahorses. The seahorse was once found in every ocean of the world from 20 feet to 100 feet which is the area most frequented by man. Today the seahorse is facing extinction from over fishing. The seahorse is now an endangered species protected by CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). The Seahorse Hawaii Foundation is working to protect these magnificent sea creatures through conservation, education, research and propagation at their Kona Facility located within the Ocean Rider Seahorse Ranch on the Big Island. In heraldry, a seahorse is depicted as a creature with the foreparts of a horse and the hind parts of a fish. For example, the right supporter of the Isle of Wight Arms, the supporters on either side of the crest of the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, or the arms of the University of Newcastle, Australia. The seahorse is prominent in the logo of Waterford Crystal and the logotype of illustrator W. W. Denslow. In the Seri culture of northwestern Mexico, the legend is that the seahorse is a person who, to escape his pursuers, fled into the sea, placing his sandals in his waist belt at his back. The National Society for Epilepsy has a seahorse for its mascot named Caesar (after the Roman emperor, Julius Caesar, who was believed to have had epilepsy). The seahorse mascot was chosen because the hippocampus, a part of the brain that is resistant to damage from epileptic seizures, resembles a seahorse in shape. In the Hawaiian culture the seahorse has long be a sign of eternal friendship. Dichroic Glass: Also known as "Dichro" for Short; Dichroic glass is a glass containing multiple micro-layers of metal oxides, with a total thickness of three to five millionths of an inch, which gives the glass dichroic optical properties. Dichroism has two related but distinct meanings in optics. A dichroic material is either one which causes visible light to be split up into distinct beams of different wavelengths (colors), or one in which light rays having different polarizations are absorbed by different amounts. The original meaning of dichroic, from the Greek dikhroos, two-colored, refers to any optical device which can split a beam of light into two beams with differing wavelengths. The second meaning of dichroic refers to a material in which light in different polarization states traveling through it experience a varying absorption. The term came about because of early observations of the effect in crystals such as tourmaline. In these crystals, the strength of the dichroic effect varies strongly with the wavelength of the light, making them appear to have different colors when viewed with light having differing polarizations.
