Hawaii has nearly 200 species in a multitude of families and positive identification is often difficult for the untrained. Much of the literature available is old. The Papa`i ako`ako`a (Rainbow Swimming Crab) (Charybdis erythrodactyla) is a beautiful, multi-colored swimming crab with blue marks on a yellow-orange carapace and legs. It has large claw-bearing limbs with numerous spines. It is found resting in caves, usually on ledges near the ceiling. The crabs belongs to Family Epialtidae have small eyes without true orbits. The body is smooth and usually angular in someway. Most species have been found living in masses of green algae, but also at times in the brown alga. This is a beautiful, multi-colored swimming crab that typically averages 3 inches wide in size. Hawaiian History, Legends and Symbolism: In Hawai`i, the crab is mentioned in the history of Kamehameha I, stories, legends and chants and also in the contruction of sails for Hawaiian War Canoes. The most ancient type of Polynesian sails were triangular, which was made of strips of fine matting sewn together and mounted to two spars. These were found in the Marquesas, Tuamotus, Cook Islands, and New Zealand as an equilateral triangle shape. Later, the triangular sail was changed to a four-sided shape. This became a 20th century tradition which evolved to meet sail demands. Kamehameha's drive to unite the islands required more than hit and run raids. He needed to keep his army supplied and together. The canoes must be capable of returning back to Hawai`i island, sailing short-handed and against prevailing wind for supplies and reinforcements. The Peleleu Class War Canoes were invented to do just that. They were deep-hulled and armed with swivel guns. Fore-and-aft sail rigs were capable of sailing upwind. The sails evolved into a "full-bellied shape" for sailing with the wind. In the 18th century, the boom lift evolved, bending the boom to a curve, causing sail to be more effective for running downwind. It was given a "crab-claw" appearance. Many of the Polynesian and Solomon Islands cut the sails into a true crab-claw shape, but Hawaiian's were sewn from strips of matting plaited to the curve. This highly-efficient new shape effectively reduced loads that the ends of the spar had to carry, and it caused excessive wind thrust to be spilled out. Another crab metaphor was the Hawaiian compliment "A`ama kua lenalena" (“The swift black crab with a yellow back). This was a compliment given to a swift-moving canoe formation coming up the sands during an amphibious landing and probably made up of Ali`i Warriors since only Ali`i could wear the yellow-feathered capes. The sand crab is also mentioned a Warrior Chant describing enemies as crabs. In the Moloka`i Koa Upu`upe`i chant, the third verse states “Pû`ali ôhiki ke one Kawela” - "Multitudes of crabs on the sands of Kawela". The sands of Kawela gave the Moloka`i warriors the advantage of the high ground. Invading warriors covered the sands like crabs because of the strategic terrain. The Moloka`i artillery (slings) would hurl so many stones it was described as a dark blanket like the koko rain falling. In the legend of Maui (the trickster, the sun god, a time-shifter and creator of the Hawaiian Islands) the Tahitian and Hawaiian versions mention an allusion to the life of the crab as symbol of rebirth. According to the Hawaiian story, man lived like the crab, he came out of the first shell and lived in that soft condition until he grew hard again. Thus man lived, became old, then he returned again to youth, became beautiful once more, the body grew as it had before, became old, and so on." King Kamehameha I: Also known as Kamehameha the Great, was perhaps the most renowned practitioner of lua, the art of life and death (an ancient form of Hawaiian Martial Arts). As an infant, Kamehameha, son of high chief Keoua, was named Pai`ea, meaning "hard-shelled crab." Hawaiian tradition relates that just prior to Pai`ea’s birth, a bright star, named Kokoiki appeared. It so happens that the date of this legend coincides with the appearance of Halley’s Comet in 1758. When Kokoiki was viewed by the kahunas (Hawai`i’s Mystic Seers), it was prophesied that this man would defeat all his rivals and reign supreme over the entire island chain. Because of the prophecy, he was seen as a very large threat to the current rulers. The infant prince was ordered to be put to death by Alapai, former king and father of Pai`ea’s mother, Kekuiapoiwa. However, young Pai`ea was hidden and reared secretly in seclusion by the villagers. Pai`ea grew to manhood and his name was changed to Kamehameha, which means "The very lonely one," or "the one set apart." Kamehameha fulfilled the prophecy, conquering and unifying all the Hawaiian islands by 1810, and was subsequently nicknamed the Warrior King. He was famed for his ambition, strength, courage, judgment, and skill in dodging or catching a dozen spears hurled simultaneously at him. Kamehameha was, indeed, a master warrior of lua. He died on May 8, 1819 and following the ancient tradition, his bones were hidden to protect their “mana” or power. To this day, they haven’t been found. King Kamehameha Day is the only Ali'i (Royalty) holiday established during the monarchy and observed continually since its establishment by royal proclamation in 1871 by Kamehameha V, his great-grandson. The day is celebrated to honor King Kamehameha who unified the Hawaiian Islands and who stands as a symbol of Hawaiian self-determination. Symbolism: At first glance a crab seems to be a very negative dream symbol. It could represent a "crabby" or unpleasant personality. The claws could be symbolic of a clinging and hurtful person, or a side of your own personality. There may be too much dependence, clinging and forcefulness in your life. The crab may also symbolize your inability to effectively move forward and address your own difficulties (a crab often moves sideways or backwards). Some folklore interpretations say that the crab is an omen of poor health. However, there is a more positive interpretation for the crab in dreams. In some areas of metaphysics, the crab is a representative of the sea and the sky. It represents physical nourishment which can be obtained from the sea and also intellectual nourishment. As with all water dwelling animals, the crab could also represent something in the unconscious and the emotions. To see a crab in your dream, signifies you perseverance and tenacity. On an extreme note, you maybe be too clingy and dependant and hanging on to a hopeless endeavor. Crabs are also symbolic of your irritable personality. Dichroic Glass: Also known as "Dichro" for Short; Dichroic glass is a glass containing multiple micro-layers of metal oxides, with a total thickness of three to five millionths of an inch, which gives the glass dichroic optical properties. Dichroism has two related but distinct meanings in optics. A dichroic material is either one which causes visible light to be split up into distinct beams of different wavelengths (colors), or one in which light rays having different polarizations are absorbed by different amounts. The original meaning of dichroic, from the Greek dikhroos, two-colored, refers to any optical device which can split a beam of light into two beams with differing wavelengths. The second meaning of dichroic refers to a material in which light in different polarization states traveling through it experience a varying absorption. The term came about because of early observations of the effect in crystals such as tourmaline. In these crystals, the strength of the dichroic effect varies strongly with the wavelength of the light, making them appear to have different colors when viewed with light having differing polarizations.
