- Symbolism: Octopus symbolism is diverse and impressive and imparts Focus, Reasoning, Showing Potential, Intelligence, Being Creative, Flexible, and Unpredictable. As a creature of the water, the octopus holds animal symbolism pertaining to Purity, Motion, Emotion, Fluidity, Expansion, and Intuition. The octopus moves skillfully in a realm that is in constant motion ever changing and shifting. The octopus’ depth of mystery is enhanced by it own environment. Although vastly mobile and quite the traveler, the octopus is primarily a bottom dweller. In symbolic (totem) terms this is analogous of being grounded while still having the ability to exist in the watery world of the psyche. It reminds us that we may be spiritual and intuitively gifted; nonetheless we are physical beings and must temper our psychic gifts with strong foundational grounding. From eyesight, to the ability to regenerate, the octopus’ physicality is a feast for symbolic interpretations. Octopi are invertebrates, meaning they do not have a structured spinal column. This is symbolic of agility, grace and flexibility. She is able to slip into and out of the tightest places, and ambulate as if she is the embodiment of water itself. The octopus reminds us to loosen up and relax. She reminds us that we may move towards our goals in unorthodox ways and still achieve the same (if not better) results. The octopus can detach a limb at will to serve as a distraction against would be predators. From a totem perspective we could translate this to mean that we ourselves have the ability to cut loose excess baggage in our lives in order to achieve our desire. The ability to grow back a part of the body that has been removed is symbolic of Time, Unity, Cycles, Evolution, and Regeneration. This ability reminds us that our essence is never lost to us. Even the parts of ourselves we give up are never permanently removed. We are the sum of our parts (for better or worse) and even those parts we set aside shape our personality upon our path in life. This is a lesson in Acceptance, Forgiveness, Diversity, and embracing all of our facets. The octopus is extremely intelligent with the ability to Reason, Strategize, and Recall information. The octopus reminds us to use our logic to our highest advantage. She urges us to be the master of our own intelligence, and not the slave. Another tool worth mentioning is the octopus’ use of camouflage. She is the master of disguises, further emphasizing her animal symbolism of Mystery, Secretiveness, and Esoteric Knowledge. As if this isn’t impressive on its own merit, the octopus pulls a secondary veil over reality by ejecting a thick, black ink into the waters as a method of escape. Dark clouds left in her wake leave the octopus’ attackers lost and confused. This is a metaphor for illusion. The octopus reminds us that nothing is as it seems. Behind our physicality there is a vast reality imbued with subtle wonder and shimmery brilliance. - Design: Traditional Hawaiian He`e/Tako #1; Cutout, Openwork, Hand-Cut and Hand-Carved Design, Inlaid New Zealand Paua Abalone Shells, Convex (Dome-Shaped) Surface, Traditional Lashing, Hand-Woven Necklace, Smooth Polished Surface Finish, Durable Wax Twine Adjustable Cord, Beef Cow Bone Necklace Closures. - Mammoth Ivory Grade: AA (Please See Details Below). - Measures: Pendant is Approx. 1 3/4" Widest X 5.8mm Thickest X 1 1/2" Long. - Size: Necklace Cord is Approx. 26.0"-27.0" Long, Downward Size Adjustable to Shorter Lengths, as Desired. - Weight: Approx. 8.9 grams Total. - Features: In Hawaiian, the Words "Mai na kupuna mai" Means "Traditional", "Miki`oi" Means "Skilled Detailed Craftsmanship", "Nani makamae" Means "Exquisite", "Nani e makahehi 'ia ai" Means "Alluring", and "Punono" Means "Gorgeous", All of Which Describe This Combined Pendant and Necklace Design Exactly! About He`e/Tako (Hawai`i Day Octopus: The Hawaiian Day Octopus (Octopus cyanea) is the most common octopus in Hawai`i. The Day octopus is also known as Cyane’s Octopus or the Big Blue Octopus. As its name suggests it hunts during the day and so has developed an amazing ability to camouflage itself by rapidly changing the overall color and texture of its skin. It has become adept at blending in so that it actually looks like the natural rocks surrounding it, both in color and texture. Its complex brain can tell when it moves from sand to rocks for example and it immediately instructs the skin to change so as to resemble the new environment. The Day octopus is quite large with a body length of around 6.5 inches and legs reaching 32 inces, but even this doesn’t stop them from becoming virtually invisible to predators. Under normal circumstances the Day octopus has a brown color with dark oval patches that resemble eyes. Occasionally however these false eyes are not visible. The Day octopus feeds on crabs, small fishes, shrimp and bivalves. It excavates holes in coral reefs and these can be easily identified by the empty shells and other remains of its prey that litter the floor. The He`e are featured in Hawaiian mythology, and as 'Aumakua (personal family gods). An 'Aumakua could manifest itself in varying forms such as a shark, a sea turtle, a hawk, a lizard, a pueo (owl) or any other animal, plant or mineral. Members of the family were said to recognize their 'Aumakua, no matter what form it chose, whether it be an insect on land or a crab in the ocean the following day. The ancestral god might appear in a dream to furnish guidance or spiritual strength in difficult times. When a fisherman or craftsman was especially successful, credit was often given to his 'Aumakua for intervening with the principal gods to impart the Mana (Spiritual Power) that enabled an earthly being to develop such skill. In the traditions of ancient Hawai`i, Kanaloa, one of the four major gods, symbolized by the squid or by the octopus, and is typically associated with Kane. It is also the name of an extinct volcano in Hawai`i. In legends and chants Kane and Kanaloa are portrayed as complementary powers. In this way, they represent a divine duality of wild and taming forces like those observed in the popular yin-yang principle of Chinese Taoism. Is Woolly Mammoth Ivory Legal?: Please See Full Details in Our FAQ Section Located Under the Service Page. The sales of mammoth ivory (prehistoric, fossilized, petrified ivory), is NOT ILLEGAL or regulated anywhere on this planet. All of our ivory carvings offered are 100% legal to own, buy, sell and ship within the United States and abroad. The current use of mammoth ivory totally complies with C.I.T.E.S. and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Because of this, Mammoth Ivory is 100% legal internationally without any C.I.T.E.S. permits or other import/export paperwork. Grades of Mammoth Ivory: Similar to graded gemstones, Mammoth Ivory has a graded evaluation given for the various types of quality obtained and used. Ivory material is offered by premium chunk slabs or lower grade scrap pieces. "AA" Grade superb ivory is the very best quality thick slabs, perfectly preserved ivory from the inner most portions of the tusk. AA-Grade ivory has a nicer coloration or outstanding form compared to A-Grade ivory. The ivory displays a light creamy patina color background, has no bark (dark outer tusk surface layer), virtually no cracks and the material has been cured for at least 7-years to maintain its integrity. Quality AA-grade ivory is somewhat rare and in limited supplies with prices continuing to soar upwards as demand increases to obtain these graded slabs. "A" Grade ivory is excellent quality ivory, cured and perfectly preserved from 5-7 years from the inner to upper portions of the inner tusk, showing little or no bark in the slabs, and practically no ring cracking or splitting, with thick flawless areas to work from to some areas with a few minor cracks in the slab that carvers have to work around. The ivory displays a range of gorgeous colors from a medium to dark cream, a golden tan, to a chocolate patina color background. A-Grade ivory is of a premium quality, semi-expensive ivory slab material that most carvers use as a standard since it is useful for all purposes. "B" Grade ivory is fair to good quality ivory, cured and preserved for upwards of 3-years from the very upper portions of the inner tusk to the outside surface layer portions of the tusk. The ivory will display bark, erratic colors and surface textures, splits and ring cracks. Carvers tend to avoid this grade of ivory because of the limited working areas from which they can create their pieces of artwork. B-Grade ivory tends to appeal to those creating small pieces of ivory jewelry such as cutting en cabochon or small inlaid accent works. "C" Grade ivory is of the lowest quality and very affordable ivory available. Typically, C-Grade ivory comes in flat scrap (leftover) pieces and layers, some dark, some cracks, and can have a chalky surface. C-Grade appeals only to those making very small jewelry items or inlays, which is not suitable for any types of carvings, knife handles, or grips. To create the best mammoth carvings, I only offer premium, excellent grade "A" quality Siberian mammoth ivory from Russia, which are perfectly preserved. All of my carvings offered and legal to own, buy, sell and ship within the United States and abroad. The use of mammoth ivory totally complies with C.I.T.E.S. and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
