Carving History: Bone and Ivory carving are a traditional and often sacred craft practiced by some of the more native tribes around the world. The ocean has always been the dominant force for the Hawaiian people who traveled huge distances in their long canoes and lived on the bounty of the tropical waters. They had a great respect for the creatures on the sea. Bone and Ivory material carvings are some of the most beautiful wearable art works available today and come in a wide variety of styles from very traditional pieces to the more contemporary or modern styles. Pendants, jewelry and various tools such as needles, spear tips and fish hooks made from bone developed into a fine art form with great importance being placed on every piece, many of which took years to make using stone tools. Some have inlays of precious stones or colorful shell and all have a story or meaning behind their design. It is believed that a carving which is worn with respect or given and received with love, takes on part of the spirit of those who wear or handle it. In this way it becomes a spiritual link between people spanning time and distance. A carving that has been worn by family or tribal members over many generations contains the spirit of all of those people and is truly a great and powerful treasure. Most carvings combine elements from several areas of mythology which interact with each other to tell a story. Each element has its own specific meaning and the way they are portrayed or combined is what gives a carving its own special character. The meanings of some elements vary from region to region but all share common roots. About Humpback Whales in Hawai`i: When preparing for a deep dive, Kohola kuapi`o (Humpback Whales) will arch (hump) their back and raise their tail flukes above water. It is this pronounced arching of the back that has earned the humpback whale its common name. A humpback whale's tail is so powerful that it only takes one or two thrusts to propel its entire body out of the water. The undersides of their tail flukes are as distinctive as our fingerprints, ranging from all black to all white, with a whole array of splotching, patches and scarring in between. The trailing edges of the flukes have a slight "S" curve with many knobby scallops and average 15 feet in width. Hawai`i is truly a unique place. The islands are like emerald specks in the center of a vast ocean of indigo blue, populated with rare plants, unique animals and warm people who always offer a friendly "aloha." The Hawaiian Islands have at their heart the only Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary dedicated to whales and their habitat. Na Kohola (The Humpback Whale) are found in all of the world's oceans, although they generally prefer near shore and near-island habitats for both feeding and breeding. An estimated sixty-percent of the North Pacific whales migrate to the main Hawaiian islands during the winter months, November through May, with peaks during mid-February to mid-March, each year. The round-trip distance traveled during this annual migration is approximately 6,000 miles, one of the longest migration distances of any animal species. During their stay in Hawai`i, they do not feed, but rely upon stored energy. Near the islands, the whales devote most of their time to mating and giving birth to their calves. Female humpbacks are also very nurturing mothers. They stay in very close contact with their young while on the breeding grounds, suckle their calves for up to a year, and defend and protect them from predators. We are lucky to visit the whales in their nursery, in such a beautiful setting. Because the humpback calves are born here, they are truly a kama`aina (child of the land). While visiting the islands, Kohola have become renowned for their various mysterious whale songs and acrobatic displays (dramatic behaviors with slapping their pectoral fins, tails and flukes and conducting spectacular surface breaches). It is estimated that approximately 2,000 to 5,000 individuals come to Hawai`i each year. The annual migration of the humpback whales, from their summer home in icy Alaskan waters to their Hawaiian winter destination, is a miraculous feat, but how they find their way still remains a mystery. Is Woolly Mammoth Ivory Legal?: Please See Full Details in Our FAQ Section Located Under the Service Page. The sales of mammoth ivory (prehistoric, fossilized, petrified ivory), is NOT ILLEGAL or regulated anywhere on this planet. All of our ivory carvings offered are 100% legal to own, buy, sell and ship within the United States and abroad. The current use of mammoth ivory totally complies with C.I.T.E.S. and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Because of this, Mammoth Ivory is 100% legal internationally without any C.I.T.E.S. permits or other import/export paperwork. Grades of Mammoth Ivory: Similar to graded gemstones, Mammoth Ivory has a graded evaluation given for the various types of quality obtained and used. Ivory material is offered by premium chunk slabs or lower grade scrap pieces. "AA" Grade superb ivory is the very best quality thick slabs, perfectly preserved ivory from the inner most portions of the tusk. AA-Grade ivory has a nicer coloration or outstanding form compared to A-Grade ivory. The ivory displays a light creamy patina color background, has no bark (dark outer tusk surface layer), virtually no cracks and the material has been cured for at least 7-years to maintain its integrity. Quality AA- grade ivory is somewhat rare and in limited supplies with prices continuing to soar upwards as demand increases to obtain these graded slabs. "A" Grade ivory is excellent quality ivory, cured and perfectly preserved from 5-7 years from the inner to upper portions of the inner tusk, showing little or no bark in the slabs, and practically no ring cracking or splitting, with thick flawless areas to work from to some areas with a few minor cracks in the slab that carvers have to work around. The ivory displays a range of gorgeous colors from a medium to dark cream, a golden tan, to a chocolate patina color background. A-Grade ivory is of a premium quality, semi-expensive ivory slab material that most carvers use as a standard since it is useful for all purposes. "B" Grade ivory is fair to good quality ivory, cured and preserved for upwards of 3-years from the very upper portions of the inner tusk to the outside surface layer portions of the tusk. The ivory will display bark, erratic colors and surface textures, splits and ring cracks. Carvers tend to avoid this grade of ivory because of the limited working areas from which they can create their pieces of artwork. B-Grade ivory tends to appeal to those creating small pieces of ivory jewelry such as cutting en cabochon or small inlaid accent works. "C" Grade ivory is of the lowest quality and very affordable ivory available. Typically, C-Grade ivory comes in flat scrap (leftover) pieces and layers, some dark, some cracks, and can have a chalky surface. C-Grade appeals only to those making very small jewelry items or inlays, which is not suitable for any types of carvings, knife handles, or grips. To create the best mammoth carvings, I only offer premium, excellent grade "A" quality Siberian mammoth ivory from Russia, which are perfectly preserved. All of my carvings offered and legal to own, buy, sell and ship within the United States and abroad. The use of mammoth ivory totally complies with C.I.T.E.S. and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
