- Carver: Dennis DeLuze is a gifted Master Kahuna Kalai (Carving Expert) in Jade, Whale Bone and Whale Ivory Carvings, Sculpture, and Gemstone Cutter. Dennis currently resides on O`ahu, Hawai`i. He was well known for once carving jade and ivory for the original Ming’s of Honolulu during the 1960s-1990s, where he honed his skills during those many years. Currently, he is again carving jade pieces and providing his technical expertise for the newly resumed Ming's of Hawaii, operated by the original Mings grandson. Currently, Dennis is using Mammoth, Mastodon, and other ivory materials, as well as the very tough and dense Olmec Blue and Black jades from Guatemala. Whether taking 4-5 hours to create a bone or ivory Makau Fish Hook or 8-9 hours taken just to drill the bail hole for a large Black Jade piece, each hand-carved work-of-art is painstakingly and patiently persevered until completion. As a Master Carver, Dennis has even applied for patents on his unique designs. All of his creations are uniquely Hawaiian, some with a sense of humor from his “Dead Fish” design, to others being highly desired including all of his Makau Fish Hook shapes, Poi Pounders and his patented Palaoa design. Hawaiian Makau History: The hook catches the secrets of the kai hohonu (deep ocean). For the ancient Hawaiians, the sea was not only a source of beauty and recreation but provided, most importantly, food for the ohana (family). "Cast a hook and partake of the gifts from below so we may be physically sustained on our life’s journey." Over the generations, po’e lawai’a (fishermen) who generally descended from families of fishermen, honed their hunting skills with the help of many tools. Catching fish with hook and fishing line was just one of many methods that were practiced in Hawai`i. Bare hands, spears, slip nooses, nets, and traps were also used. Hawaiian fishermen typically used ka makau (fish hooks) to catch fish in the open ocean. They possessed the knowledge of special fishing techniques for which hooks were needed to catch certain kinds of fish. In addition to being very skilled ocean travelers, fishermen were also skilled artisans as most carved their own hooks. The ancient Hawaiians relied on their natural surroundings for materials to produce these makau. Examples were bone, shell, or wood and tied together with kaula (rope, cordage) using natural tree, plant and coconut fibers. This simple tool provided the fundamental need for regular sustenance in the Polynesian culture. Larger hooks like the makau iwi kohola (whale bone), makau iwi kanaka (human bone), makau iwi ‘ilio (dog bone) and makau iwi pua`a (pig bone) were used to catch large prey such as sharks. While hooks made from makau niho ‘ilio (dog tooth), makau iwi manu (bird bone), makau paweo (mother of pearl) or makau ea (turtle shell) were more fragile and often used for smaller sized fish. Highly valued materials were the leho (cowry shell) and the pa (mother of pearl shell) by the fishermen, because through the sparkling patterns and iridescent shell reflections the he`e (octopus) and aku (bonito tuna) were captured. Two classifications of hook designs were made. Simple hooks, made using one single piece of material and composite hooks made of two or more pieces joined together by a lashing. The typical circular hook shape was designed to effectively catch fish while avoiding catching honu (sea turtles), which were sacred and regarded as `aumakua (a personal family god). Certain religious ceremonies associated with fishing were recognized by using a ko`a (special stone shrine) upon which offerings were placed. The fish supply remained constant throughout the year, because the catching of a certain kind of fish was always restricted to a certain time. Outside of this time it was declared kapu (prohibited). The fish eaten during the summer months were different from those eaten during the winter. To many Hawaiians today, the makau (fish hook) holds a strong link to the past while reaching forward using na mea kapu (those sacred things and customs). Grades of Mammoth Ivory: Similar to graded gemstones, Mammoth Ivory has a graded evaluation given for the various types of quality obtained and used. Ivory material is offered by premium chunk slabs or lower grade scrap pieces. "AA" Grade superb ivory is the very best quality thick slabs, perfectly preserved ivory from the inner most portions of the tusk. AA-Grade ivory has a nicer coloration or outstanding form compared to A-Grade ivory. The ivory displays a light creamy patina color background, has no bark (dark outer tusk surface layer), virtually no cracks and the material has been cured for at least 7-years to maintain its integrity. Quality AA-grade ivory is somewhat rare and in limited supplies with prices continuing to soar upwards as demand increases to obtain these graded slabs. "A" Grade ivory is excellent quality ivory, cured and perfectly preserved from 5-7 years from the inner to upper portions of the inner tusk, showing little or no bark in the slabs, and practically no ring cracking or splitting, with thick flawless areas to work from to some areas with a few minor cracks in the slab that carvers have to work around. The ivory displays a range of gorgeous colors from a medium to dark cream, a golden tan, to a chocolate patina color background. A-Grade ivory is of a premium quality, semi-expensive ivory slab material that most carvers use as a standard since it is useful for all purposes. "B" Grade ivory is fair to good quality ivory, cured and preserved for upwards of 3-years from the very upper portions of the inner tusk to the outside surface layer portions of the tusk. The ivory will display bark, erratic colors and surface textures, splits and ring cracks. Carvers tend to avoid this grade of ivory because of the limited working areas from which they can create their pieces of artwork. B-Grade ivory tends to appeal to those creating small pieces of ivory jewelry such as cutting en cabochon or small inlaid accent works. "C" Grade ivory is of the lowest quality and very affordable ivory available. Typically, C-Grade ivory comes in flat scrap (leftover) pieces and layers, some dark, some cracks, and can have a chalky surface. C-Grade appeals only to those making very small jewelry items or inlays, which is not suitable for any types of carvings, knife handles, or grips. To create the best mammoth carvings, I only offer premium, excellent grade "A" quality Siberian mammoth ivory from Russia, which are perfectly preserved.
