- Symbolism: A Protector and Ancient Hawaiian Symbol Representing Strength, Courage and Prosperity. Ku, was the Ancient Tiki god of War and Strength, yet, it was said his brothers showed him the meaning of love. In Hawaiian mythology Ku is one of the four great gods along with the ancient tiki gods, Kanaloa, Kane, and Lono. He was husband to the goddess Hina suggesting a complementary dualism, or natural balance, since ku in Hawaiian means "to stand”, or "to strike” while one meaning of the word hina is "fallen down." Ku represents the East, or the sun rising, which indicates morning. Hina represents the West, or the sun setting, which indicates evening. Ku and Hina were the rulers of the ancient people and were the great ancestral gods of earth and heaven who have general control over the bounty of earth and generations of mankind. Ku, as well as other gods caused light to shine on the world. Ku freed one from their faults and errors. His name was usually combined with descriptive native words that give specific attributes, as in Ku-ka-ili-moku meaning "Ku-the-seizer-of-land". He can be Ku-of-the-deep-forest, Ku-of-the-undergrowth, Ku-adzing-out-the-canoe, and many more. But his other aggressive names have made ancient natives tremble in fear at the very mentioning of those names. The Ancient Hawaiians worshiped Ku for things such as good fishing, long life, good crops and family, and prosperity as a whole. Most well-known for being the god of Strength, Ku's tiki would often be brought along to support young warriors into battle. He was also the main idol present during all competitions to offer participants strength and courage.
