- Carver: Semisi is a gifted Master Wood, Whale Ivory, and Beef Cow Bone Carver. His wife is also a skilled artisan with Bone Carvings, Blister and Mabe pearls, and shell crafts. In fact, their family encompassing three generations are all involved in craftmaking as their eldest 13-yr old son is beginning to learn the trade. Semisi, his wife and five children currently reside on O`ahu, Hawai`i. He has been carving since his early 20’s. His skills extend to all sorts of Polynesian design craft influences from the various islands of the South Pacific covering Tonga, Samoa, Hawai`i, New Zealand, Fiji, and Tahiti. His skills require no blueprints or manuals to carve a piece. He simply creates what his mind envisions from his past cultural teachings of his heritage and from his inherent traits as a skilled carver. With each hand-carved piece, he can create amazing works of art. Each and every piece is 100% unique in its own right; it is not mass-produced, and there is no close duplication whatsoever. His works reflect the passion and love he has as a Master Carver. About the Hei Matau: A hei matau is a bone carving in the shape of a highly stylized fish hook typical of the Maori people of New Zealand. The fish-hook shape of the hei matau finds its origins in Maori legend, which holds that the North Island of New Zealand was once a huge fish that was caught by the great mariner Maui using only a woven line of hair and a bone hook. Legend holds that the shape of Hawke Bay is that of the hei matau, which caught in the fish's side. For the Maori, the hei matau is Taonga (a Cultural Treasure). It represents not only their land, but also prosperity, fertility and safe passage over water. Traditionally, hei matau were always carved from whale bone. They came in several different forms ranging from the plain and utilitarian, used for catching fish, to the highly ornate, which served as treasured family heirlooms. Today, their main use is ornamental and they are commonly worn around the neck not only by Maori, but also by other New Zealanders who identify with the hei matau as a symbol of New Zealand. In contemporary times, hei matau are commonly carved from beef cow bone or nephrite jade. Current laws against hunting whales mean that Maori bone-carvers who carve in whale bone must use a combination of ancient standings or pre-existing supplies, or bones from whales that have recently beached. According to New Zealand tradition and law, Maori have first claim on part of the skeletons of any whales which strand and are unable to be refloated. This is, however, a very limited supply.
