Pink coral was first discovered off Makapuu Point, Oahu, in 1,200 feet of water in 1966. Now it is found over the entire length of the Hawaiian chain from Oahu in the east to beyond Midway Island in the west. A very dense and hard gemstone, the marbled and shaded colorings in some larger pink corals are natural qualities of the gem. The value of pink coral gemstones is dependent upon their rarity but all shades of this coral are highly prized. Hawaiian pink coral designs reflect the beautiful and fragrant blossoms of the Islands. The pink of these corals ranges from a subtle salmon red to a hibiscus pink to pale whitish pink. Commonly found at 1100 feet and deeper, pink coral grows only 1/3 of an inch annually. Harvesting of Hawaiian pink coral is carefully controlled and monitored to ensure it remains a renewable resource. To ensure the future of pink coral, divers strictly adheres to state regulations that prohibit the harvesting of immature colonies. The precious coral fishery in Hawaii and the Western Pacific consists of one industry but two distinct and separate fisheries. The first is the harvest of black coral by scuba divers from depths of 30-100 m. The second is a fishery for pink and gold coral at depths between 400 and 1500 m and employs either a human-operated submersible that permits selective harvest or tangle net dredges which are nonselective. The modern history of these fisheries date from 1958 until the present. Pink coral jewelry is the traditional gift for the 35th wedding anniversary. Black Coral: In Hawaiian, black coral is called ‘ēkaha kū moana, which was proclaimed the official Hawaii State gemstone in 1987. It takes many years for coral to mature and be ready to harvest and turn into fine jewelry. Black coral is considered a very valuable coral and one of the highest grade today is found in the seas of Hawaii. Black coral when highly polished is dazzling and holds great reflective properties. Black Coral was the first of the precious corals to be found in Hawaiian waters, growing at depths of 250 to 350 feet. Black coral grows in all oceans, ranging from just below the tide line to depths of thousands of feet. Most of the 150 known species live in tropical waters below about 300 feet. The few that thrive in shallower water, 60 feet or less, usually grow in caves and under ledges where light is dim. Black corals thrive in such darkness because they don't have symbiotic plants in their tissues, like reef corals do. Another difference between these two coral types is that black coral does not form reefs or heads. A colony of black coral looks like a tree growing up from the ocean floor. The largest of such trees in Hawaii reach about 6 feet tall, averaging 2 inches of growth per year. The trunks and branches of black coral (and some pink and gold species) are as hard as ivory and pearl. Black coral is rare and, when polished, it shines with such luster you can almost see your own reflection in it. Black corals are particularly common in the Indo-Pacific region and the Caribbean, where coral reefs have been the major source. Taiwan and the Philippines have tended to be the dominant exporters, but the Great Barrier Reef of eastern Australia is perhaps the best-known source. And, relatively large amounts are harvested off Hawaii, where black coral "appears to have first been found in 1958 off the island of Maui. Harvesting of Hawaiian precious coral is carefully controlled and monitored to ensure it remains a renewable resource. To ensure the future of black coral, divers strictly adheres to state regulations that prohibit the harvesting of immature colonies. About Australian White Lip Oysters: A large species of oyster from the Pinctada maxima family, found in the waters off Australia, Fiji, Tahiti, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Japan. These oysters grow in excess of 12 inches in length and can produce a wide range of South Sea cultured pearls in sizes from 8 mm to over 22 mm and in colors including silver/white, pink, and cream. The White Lip pearl oyster has been valued by people in the IndoPacific region for centuries. Its shell was used for making jewelry, decorations, and tools, such as fish hooks and knives. The White Lip Oysters’ “mother of pearl” inner shell has beautiful iridescent qualities with a radiant white/off-white background color with cream overtones. This pendant is created from Australian White Mother of Pearl shells, the same shell of the oysters that give birth to superb South Sea White Pearls. The White Lip Mother of Pearl shell is surface polished to display a beautiful white shine along with its natural rainbow colored hues and iridescence. Gorgeous and very radiant in appearance! Coral Care Tips: Corals are delicate gems and should be taken proper care of. To clean Coral jewelry, wipe it gently with a moist soft cloth, as Coral is much softer than other gem materials. Also, they should be stored carefully and separately from your other jewelry items to avoid scratches. Coral is also porous, similar to pearls, so care should be taken to see that coral jewelry does not come in contact with any chemicals. Because Coral is produced by a living organism it cannot be put into jewelry cleaning solutions. The best way to protect your coral jewelry is to rub mineral oil on about every 6 months to preserve their natural luster. Do not use an ultrasonic cleaner for coral jewelry. Mother of Pearl Care: Use very mild soaps and water on mother of pearl to clean it, and avoid storing it with jewelry which may scratch it and wear away the luminous layers of nacre.
