The Hindu goddess Lakshmi was said to also be created from the grit and pearls within the shell. About `Opihi makaiauli (Hawaiian Greenfoot Limpet): Cellana is a genus of sea snails or limpets, marine gastropod molluscs in the family Patellidae, the true limpets. This genus occurs in the temperate and tropical Indo-Pacific oceans, Hawai`i and around Australia and New Zealand. In smaller populated areas, its diversity is also found around Japan, the Red Sea, Mauritius, Madagascar, and South Africa. In Hawaiian, limpets are called "`Opihi." `Opihi shell's are beautiful, especially when ground and polished; they possess beautiful sunbursts or radial designs with nice reflective features similar to abalone and mother of pearl shells. All `Opihi shells are like a finger print, unique to the next, and no two are ever alike. `Opihi is a prized shellfish delicacy in the Hawaiian Islands, which can sell for Up to $300 per gallon and have a rich; They've long been a staple of the traditional Hawaiian diet. At first, the flavor is aggressively marine, like getting a deep breath of wild sea spray. They look a little like oysters, but they're much meatier and tougher to bite through, a testament to a life spent clutching a wave-battered rock for survival. To visitors, it may not be the island's greatest dish, but opihi will take you deeper into Hawai`i. By the time you eat your last opihi, you will not be thinking in terms of flavor; its bracing bite is elemental and pure, and you will have truly discovered Hawai`i. To some native Hawaiians, `opihi are `Aumakua (Family or Personal gods), deified ancestors who might assume the shape of living animals, plants, clouds, etc. around them. For these families, eating `opihi is kapu (forbidden). `Opihi comprise of four species of saltwater Hawaiian limpets and are found nowhere else on earth. The Blackfoot `Opihi (Cellana exarata), aka "`opihi makaiauli", is found on the upper portion of wave-washed intertidal shores from Puhahonu to the island of Hawai`i. The Yellowfoot `Opihi (Cellana sandwicensis), aka "`opihi alinalina", is found on the middle-low portion of wave-washed intertidal shores from Mokupapapa to the island of Hawai`i. "Kneecap" `Opihi (Cellana talcosa), aka "`opihi koelep", is found from the shallow subtidal to the middle intertidal zone on shores from Niihau and Kauai to Hawai`i. The Greenfoot `Opihi (Cellana melanostoma), also called "`opihi makaiauli", is commonly observed throughout the intertidal zone from Puhahonu to Nihoa. About Dentalium: The tusk shells or scaphopods are a class of marine molluscs which vary in size from minute to medium-sized. The scientific name of this class is Scaphopoda, meaning "shovel-footed" within the order Dentaliida. The word "dentalium", as used by archeologists and anthropologists, means tooth shells or tusk shells. These molluscs live on soft substrates offshore (usually not intertidally). Because of this subtidal habitat and the small size of most species, many beachcombers are unfamiliar with them; their shells are usually not nearly as common or as easily visible in the beach drift as the shells of sea snails and clams. The aragonitic shells of scaphopods are conical and curved in a planispiral way, and they are usually whitish or greenish in color. Because of these characters, the shell somewhat resembles a miniature elephant's tusk, hence the common name tusk shell. However, unlike an elephant's tusk, the shells of these molluscs are hollow and open at both ends. Some tusk shells are minute, and most are 1.6"-2.4" long. Tusk shells are well-known in the fossil record, having first appeared in the Ordovician period. As such they were the most recent of all molluscan classes to evolve. Diversity of tusk shells are found at seashores to depths down to 23,000 feet in cool and warm water oceans worldwide from the Eastern Pacific, throughout Hawaii and Polynesia, Australia, Japan, and the Indo-Pacific. The use of these shells by Amerindians is well-known in archaeological literature. This usage is found along the western coast of Canada and along the Pacific Ocean coast of the northwest USA extending southward to Southern California. Dentalium shells were historically harvested around the Pacific Northwest coast, because they were highly valued by First Nations peoples as an international trade item. Peoples of the Northwest Pacific Coast would trade dentalium into the Great Plains, Great Basin, Central Canada, Northern Plateau and Alaska for items including many foods, decorative materials, dyes, hides, Macaw feathers coming from Central America, turquoise from the Southwest, and many other items. On the Central Coast of California, Dentalium neohexagonum has been recovered from prehistoric habitation sites of the Chumash who apparently used these shells as tubes, possibly in jewelry items. This kind of shell is still appreciated as a decorative bead object for native regalia. The Nez Perce would pierce their noses and wear dentalia through their septums; this practice led to the current name applied to the tribe. The shells were also used to make belts and headdresses by the Natufian culture of the Middle East, and are a possible indicator of early social stratification. Shells of the species Dentalium pretiosum were used as money.Purchase Assurance of Quality: As Each of These Earrings Are Created Using Natural Seashells, Each One is Slightly Unique to the Next; There Are Natural Variations in the Shells Patterns and Color Tone Appearances, Which Are Approximately Represented in the Item's Picture.
