- Symbolism: (Kohola ~ Hawaiian Humpback Whale): A Guardian Protector, Wisdom. The Ocean has Always Been the Dominant Force for the Polynesian People Who Traveled Huge Distances in Their Long Canoes and Lived on the Bounty of the Tropical Waters. They Had a Great Respect for the Ocean and the Creatures in the Sea and in Particular Dolphins and Whales. The Whale With its Great Size and Obvious Intelligence Played an Important Part in the Culture of the Māori and Throughout the Islands of Polynesia. They Were Often Represented as an Example of Family Love With Mother and Calf Always Side by Side and Touching at Every Opportunity. Many Whales in an Area Often Meant an Absence of Sharks Offering a Protective Surrounding Area. The Whale Also Symbolizes Empathy for Conservational Issues, and Strength with Sensitivity. Today, the Whale Represents Protection on all Forms of Transport.
- Carver: Semisi is a gifted Master Wood, Whale Ivory, and Beef Cow Bone Carver. His wife is also a skilled artisan with Bone Carvings, Blister and Mabe pearls, and shell crafts. In fact, their family encompassing three generations are all involved in craftmaking as their eldest 13-yr old son is beginning to learn the trade. Semisi, his wife and five children currently reside on O`ahu, Hawai`i. He has been carving since his early 20’s. His skills extend to all sorts of Polynesian design craft influences from the various islands of the South Pacific covering Tonga, Samoa, Hawai`i, New Zealand, and Tahiti. His skills require no blueprints or manuals to carve a piece. He simply creates what his mind envisions from his past cultural teachings of his heritage and from his inherent traits as a skilled carver. With each hand-carved piece, he can create amazing works of art. Each and every piece is 100% unique in its own right; it is not mass-produced, and there is no close duplication whatsoever. His works reflect the passion and love he has as a Master Carver. I hope you will enjoy one or more of his mini-masterpieces created with mana (divine power) and the inherent traits of his generation teachings). I personally love all the special symbolism behind each bone piece he designs and creates. This Bone Carving was beautifully hand-carved by Semisi on O`ahu; I am proud to offer and bring his pieces to your home.

Polynesian Carving History: Bone and shell carvings are a traditional and often sacred craft practiced by some of the more ancient native tribes around the world. Polynesian carvings are some of the most beautiful wearable or decorative art works available today and come in a wide variety of styles from the very traditional to the more contemporary styles. Hawaiian, Polynesian, and Maori bone carvings are very similar and closely related; a vast distant link spanning the entire Pacific Ocean throughout ancient times. Polynesian and Oceania bone designs were ancient symbols and most all have a story, meaning, or legend around their design. The Polynesian bone carvings based on Maori designs, in particular, have special significance. Polynesians and the New Zealand Maori had no written languages, therefore tribal history, legends, and the stories of the gods were retained using fine arts and crafts, ranging from basket and cloth-weaving to complex wood, bone, shell, and jade carvings. Pendants, jewelry and various tools such as needles, spear tips, weapons, cooking implements, and fish hooks made from bone or shells developed into a fine art form with great importance being placed on every piece, many of which took years to make using stone tools by hand. It is believed that a carving, which is worn or displayed with respect or given and received with love, takes on part of the spirit of those who wear or handle it. In this way it becomes a spiritual link between people spanning time and distance. A carving that has been worn or displayed by family or tribal members over many generations contains the spirit of all of those people and is truly a great and powerful treasure. Most carvings combine elements from several areas of mythology which interact with each other to tell a story. Each element has its own specific meaning and the way they are portrayed or combined is what gives a carving its own special character. The meanings of some elements vary from region to region but all share common roots. Carving Care: To bring back the shine on your carving simply buff it with a soft cloth. Bone and Antler carvings do require much care, but to ensure a longer life of your bone jewelry or bone/antler sculpture designs, just rub in a small amount of tea tree or jojoba oil. Never use household cleaning or jewelry polishing compounds on bone/antler carvings.
