- Symbolism: Strength, Endurance, Longevity. The pandanus or screw pine is native from southern Asia east to Hawai`i, growing at low altitudes, both cultivated and wild. It is a tree with many branches, which are tipped with spiral tufts of long narrow, spine-edged leaves. Lau`hala, lau meaning "leaf" in Hawaiian, refers to the leaves of the Hala Tree (Pandanus tectorius). The Hala Tree is of great cultural, health and economic importance in many Pacific Islands. The pineapple-shaped fruits are borne on female trees whereas the spikes of fragrant, pollenbearing flowers are borne separately on male trees. The fruit of the tree is used as an important food source throughout the Polynesian and Oceania Islands. The fruits are oftentimes consumed fresh or as a preserved food while the trunks of P. tectorius can be used as building materials. Though many parts of the Hala Tree are utilized, the most common use of Hala, in Hawaii, are the leaves. Many cultures weave the hala leaves to create useful items such as baskets, mats and hats. Though it is a long and arduous process to prepare the leaves for weaving, the final products are beautiful works of art with a pleasing earthy feel. The favored lauhala leaf for weaving was called lau`hala kilipaki (spikes that move in a light, sprightly manner). The leaves of this Pandanus species were exceptionally soft and durable. They were highly prized for their beauty in color and the ease with which they could be plaited. Special sleeping mats were created out of the Hinano (male flower) of the Hala Tree. The light colored bracts were very soft and pliable and made very finely woven mats reserved for the ali`i (chiefs). They were especially prized because of their scarcity. Today, locals can enjoy an ice cream flavored with and including the Pandanus fruit...it is yummy!
