- Symbolism: (Marakihau ~ Sea Monster): A development of the Manaia design, it has a bird-like head and was made predominately by Maori of the Northland and Auckland districts. The Marakihau is the name of one kind of Taniwha, whose origins are as old as the earth. The myths and legends surrounding the Taniwha are wide and varied throughout New Zealand. Some say the Taniwha ruled the world long before humanity existed. They also have a spiritual representation often associated to power and ferocity. Taniwha (Water Spirit, Monster, Chief, Something or Someone Awesome) take many forms from logs to reptiles and whales and often live in lakes, rivers or the sea. They are often regarded as guardians by the people who live in their territory. Marakihau typically display a long fish-like tail, human upper limbs and head, and long hollow forked tongue called ngongo. Marakihau were believed to harass and prey on shore-living people or sea-travelers. Some were said to be the spirits of departed men, an example being the famed chief Te Tahi, ancestor of the Awa people of Whakatane, where a Marakihau carving decorates a meeting house. Puhoro ~ Curled Lines): The Maori Puhoro is a Type of Moko (Tattoo) Pattern Traditionally Worn on the Arms or Legs. The Hand-Carved Puhoro Design on This Tahei is Based on Traditional Maori Ta Moko Tattooing Patterns. The Design Depicts the Wake of a Canoe, Gliding at Speed Across the Water With Rippling Waves Following Close Behind. As With all Maori Designs, it Carries a Spiritual Meaning. The Puhoro Represents Swiftness, Agility, Strength, and Courage of Character. Paua Abalone Shells: The Paua Shell Resembles the Beauty That Surrounds You, and Within Oneself to Have High Self-Esteem and Awareness of What is Happening Around You. - Carver: Liliani is a gifted Master Shell and Beef Cow Bone Carver. Her husband is also a skilled Master artisan with Bone and Wood Carvings. Her skills also extend to Blister and Mabe pearls crafts. In fact, their entire family encompassing three generations are all involved in <></>Oceania craftmaking as her eldest 12-yr old son is beginning to learn the trade. Liliani, her husband and five children currently reside on O`ahu, Hawai`i. She has honed her skills in the art of bone carving for over 15-years. Her skills extend to all sorts of Polynesian design craft influences from the various islands of the South Pacific covering Tonga, Samoa, Hawai`i, New Zealand, Fiji and Tahiti. She requires no layout, blueprints or manuals to carve a piece; She simply creates what her mind envisions from past cultural teachings of her heritage and from her inherent traits as a skilled carver. With each hand-carved piece, she can create amazing works of art. Each and every piece is 100% unique in its own right; it is not mass-produced, and there is no close duplication whatsoever. Her works reflect the passion and love she has as a Master Carver. I hope you will enjoy one or more of her mini-masterpieces created with mana (divine power) and the inherent traits of her generation teachings).
