- Symbolism:Monstera Plant: It is a veritable symbol of the tropics and its giant, dark green foliage will always create the most unusual effect. Monstera (Araceae) is commonly known as the Swiss-cheese Plant or Fruit Salad Plant. Throughout the Hawaiian islands, the Monstera deliciosa thrives in tropical and moist climates. It needs a constant supply of moisture, and needs irrigation when grown in a dry climate. It tolerates low light and low humidity. Native to southern Mexico, South America, Costa Rica and Panama. It is an introduced species (post-Cook era) to Hawaii. Monstera deliciosa usually grows in the shade. From one common name "fruit salad plant", it actually has a fruiting body (looks like a green, shucked ear of corn). The 9", dull, deep green, cone-like fruit is actually an unripened flower spike, covered with hexagonal scales that dry out and separate as the fruit ripens from the base upwards, revealing the white pulp. It takes a little longer than a year to mature to an edible stage. Unripe fruit, if eaten causes irritation to the mouth and throat because of the oxalic acid. It can be induced to ripen by picking when the base has started to wrinkle and wrapping in a bag for a few days. When unwrapped, the scales should have separated. When rippened, it has multiple array of flavors that are difficult to discern whether you are tasting a strawberry, pineapple, orange (or any citrus), bananas, or melon...hence the name "fruit salad plant." The fruit takes about one year to ripen on the vine. The plant is usually free of pests, thrives as house plants, and one of the largest taro vines known, which can grow up to 984 feet in its native habitat. It is a jungle climbing relative of the philodendron. It is seen in gardens in tropical and subtropical areas, growing well in partial sun or shade. The plant begins bearing after three years. Popular as a houseplant, it seldom fruits in the home. The large pinnate leaves are perforated with oblong or oval holes, hence the other common name "Swiss-cheese plant." Another interesting characteristic of this plant is that the seedlings, upon germination, will grow in the direction of the darkest area (not just merely away from light) until they encounter the base of a tree to grow on. They will then begin to climb toward the light which is generally up into the canopy of the tree upon which it is growing. Puhoro (Curled Lines): The Maori Puhoro is a Type of Moko (Tattoo) Pattern Traditionally Worn on the Arms or Legs. The Hand-Carved Puhoro Design on This Tahei is Based on Traditional Maori Ta Moko Tattooing Patterns. The Design Depicts the Wake of a Canoe, Gliding at Speed Across the Water With Rippling Waves Following Close Behind. As With all Maori Designs, it Carries a Spiritual Meaning. The Puhoro Represents Swiftness, Agility, Strength, and Courage of Character.
