This Round-Cabochon Black Star Diopside Gemstone is Well Cut Displaying a Nice Glassy Luster and a Very Beautiful, Translucent Black Color Tone Background, Which is Completely Natural (This Natural Star Diopside Gem Has Not Been Heated or Treated in Anyway as There are No Known Enhancing Techniques for this Type of Gem). This High Quality Gem Has Natural Inclusions Common to Star Diopsides Showing Silky Luminescent Threads Within the Asterism Effect Only (The Stone Appears Clean to the Unaided Eye) and is Only Visible Under a 10X Magnification (GIA: Type II Gem, Clarity Grade: VS). VS, Type II describes Gems that are near flawless for the particular type II gemstone, a gemologist under favorable lighting conditions can see small inclusions (small feathers, light silk, etc.) which are usually obvious when viewed with 10x magnification, but you will not readily see these inclusions to the unaided eye. This Four-Rayed Star Diopside Was Mined From the Elahera Mines, Sri Lanka. The Gemstone was Cabochon Cut and Polished in Jaipur, India Where Cutting and Polishing are Predominantly Done by Hand, Which Requires an Immense Degree of Skill and Years of Experience. In Jaipur, the Gem Manufacturing Industry is Over 300 Years Old, Which Also Happens to be the World’s Largest Center for Gemstone Cutting and Polishing. About Cabochons: Of these, the first known type of gem cuts by humans, cabochon cutting is probably the most ancient of them all. The term comes from a French and Latin words caboch, caboche or cabo signifying a bald pate or a head. The usual oval or round cabochon cut, is a gemstone which has been shaped and polished as opposed to being facetted, and closely resembles the top of a head in shape. Cabochon cut stones usually have a flat base, but sometimes a slightly convex base is used, especially in opals and in moonstones, and some stones of very dense color are cut with a concave base to thin them and thus to reduce their color. The contour of the base may be round, pear, oval, square, cushion shape, or heart shape or of any regular form. The top is always smooth and rounding and unfacetted. Cutting en cabochon is usually applied to opaque gems, while facets are usually applied to transparent stones. In the case of asteriated stones such as star sapphires and chatoyant stones such as cat's eye chrysoberyl, a domed cabochon cut is used to show the star or eye, which would not be visible in a facetted cut. The most popular shape for cutting cabochons is an oval. This is because the eye is less sensitive to small asymmetries in an oval (as opposed to a round shape), and because the oval shape, combined with the dome, is attractive. The relation of the height or thickness to the length or width may be varied to suit the size and shape of the rough piece or to suit one's ideas of symmetry, provided the material be an opaque one, such as turquoise, larimar or lapis lazuli. However, if the material is transparent, the best results in the way of the return of light to the front and hence in the display of the color of the material, are best displayed if the thickness is about one half the spread. Cabochons are set based on the design of the setting, which can be pronged or using a bezel. The best setting used to display a Black Star Diopside are bezel mountings (a metal band that runs around the edge of the gemstone to hold it securely in the setting).

About Marta:Staff Writer, Honolulu Advertiser - "A mollusk is not a pretty thing. At least from the outside. They are usually gray and craggy and covered with little craters that look like out-of-control warts. Of all the creatures in the ocean, a mollusk seems unlikely to be the one that would normally inspire art...until its shell is opened. Opening a mollusk can be like prying open a treasure box long hidden in the depths of the ocean. Iridescent colors explode from the shell, from pale gray-blues and soft golden tones to brilliant pinks, purples and greens. Now these gifts from the sea are being used to create one-of-a-kind wearable art by one of Hawai`i's jewelry designers Marta Howell of Kailua, on the Island of Oahu, Hawai`i." She begins with Mother-of-pearl, sometimes combining it with Corals and Semi-precious Stones such as Tourmaline, Peridot, Amethyst, Blue Topaz, Citrine and Garnet, as the muses move Her. David, her husband taught her silversmithing, and she uses silver to bind the pieces together. The effect is often of a silver frame around the shells and stones. Marta stated, "I see art in every piece of shell. It's a never-ending adventure. Taking layers from the shells was like finding a new world within the shell." Howell said the temperature of the ocean, age of the mollusk and algae and seaweed they eat help determine the colors the shells take on. Those from Sumatra have a golden hue; from Norway, blue-pink; and New Zealand's are green-blue. Howell said one of the properties she likes best about working with mother-of-pearl is that there is a shade that works with every skin color. When she is designing, she has six muses in mind, each is based on a woman she has known in real life. They range from a graceful, feminine Hawaiian woman to a businesswoman "with attitude." About Black Star Diopside Gems: Diopside was first described about 1800 and derives its name from the Greek dis, "twice", and òpsè, "face"; or "two-vision" in reference to the two ways of orienting the vertical prism. Black Star Diopside is a monoclinic pyroxene mineral with a composition of Calcium Magnesium Silicate. Another name that has appeared over the years for Black Star Diopside is the Black Star of India. It has a Mohs scale hardness of 5.5–6.5, and a specific gravity of 3.25 to 3.55. Its crystals are transparent to translucent; the luster is vitreous (glassy). Large quantities of Star Diopside are mainly found and cut from India. Other notable occurrences include New York, USA; Russia; Italy; Austria; Germany; Sri Lanka; Brazil; Burma; Madagascar; South Africa; Finland; Pakistan, and Canada. Diopside displays several colors ranging from a colorless clear, white, blue, black, brown, gray, bright and pale green to a yellowish or greenish brown appearance. Gemstone quality Diopside is found in two forms, the Black Star Diopside and the Chrome Diopside. Both types of these specimens are natural and not enhanced. Black Star Diopside is an opaque stone, generally black in color but can occasionally be found with shades of green; rarely a definite green. Black Star Diopside exhibits a star-like phenomenon known as Asterism. These stones contain inclusions in the form of needles that align to produce a white, 4-rayed star, two of which are straight, while the other two, not at right angles to the first pair, look slightly wavy. It is unique, because it's the only gemstone to exhibit a 4-rayed star. Unlike a Black Star Diopside, a Black Star Sapphire will display a dark six-rayed or twelve-rayed star, which can be confused with a Black Star Diopside. The way to differentiate the two stones is by viewing the star's rays. Unlike Black Star Sapphires, which are enhanced, Black Star Diopside gems are all natural, untreated and non color-enhanced. Black Star Sapphire is always heat treated to produce, intensify or lighten color and/or improve color uniformity and appearance. Specimens are always cut into round or oval cabochons which are generally biconvex with a roughly shaped, unpolished base. Regardless of whether or not a Diopside initially displayed a star, once it has been faceted, it will no longer offer up a star. For this reason, when examining Diopsides, gemstone cutters must always take the time to look closely at the stone and check to see whether it has enough properly orientated inclusions to form a star. If it does, the Diopside will be cut into a Cabochon shape, the only shape that allows the stone to display the beautiful asterism, or star. Diopside Care and Cleaning Tips: Black Star Diopside is best cleaned using warm soapy water and a soft brush. Care should be taken to avoid any sharp blows or scratches. As with most gemstones, Black Star Diopsides should be kept away from prolonged exposure to excessive heat and household chemicals that could damage the stone. Always keep your Diopside jewelry in a fabric-lined box away from other harder jewelry items to avoid scratching.About Australian Black Lip Oyster (Pteria Penguin): Pteria is a genus of winged oyster closely related to Pinctata that also produces commercial quantities of pearls. Winged oysters are edible but unpalatable, and seldom produce precious pearls. It is a tropical species, with pearly interiors and long, wing-like projections of the hinge, have fragile shells. Winged oysters are found naturally on rocks and coral near channels and capes where the current runs fast and they attach themselves to the ocean bottom and to wharf pilings. Ptaria Penguin is a major source of Mabe Pearl production. Mabe pearls have a characteristic semispherical shape and unique rainbow-like luster and are a cultured half pearl, formed by inserting a half-sphere between the mantle and the shell. Since Mabe pearl oysters do not clump and their population is small, it is difficult to obtain a lot of mother of pearl from these oysters. Pearl culturing using natural oysters was conducted on a small scale. The first established artificial breeding techniques for the Mabe pearl oysters were established in 1970. The Mabe pearl oyster, Pteria Penguin that grows up to 20-30 cm in diameter is also called “the penguin wing oyster” from its shape like a wing. They commonly display a silver color under the oyster muscle with a rich mauve, gold banding towards the black/brown outer-lip. All semispherical “half-pearls” used to be called “Mabe”, however, only pearls come from the Pteria penguin are called “Mabe pearls” now. The Mabe oyster produces a brilliant nacre with a rainbow-like spectrum of hues, and the Mabe pearls produced from this nacre, which sizes are 12-20mm in diameter, possess a uniquely penetrating brilliance, with hues ranging from light pink through deep rose-red to a "rainbow" pink. Sometimes the pearls have gold-pink or other hues of high rarity. This rich variety of lustrous hues combines with nacreous layers of a rarely seen fineness of texture to give the Mabe pearl its perennial appeal and make it our original, popular product. Habitat It can be found from the Red Sea in the east to the western tropical Pacific and from the southern islands of Japan in the north to the southern waters of Australia. Mabe pearl producing countries are Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. The Black Lip pearl oyster has been valued by people in the IndoPacific region for centuries. Its shell was used for making jewelry, decorations, and tools, such as fish hooks and knives. The Black Lip Oysters’ “mother of pearl” inner shell has beautiful iridescent qualities. The Mother of Pearl shell is surface polished to display a beautiful shine along with its natural rainbow colored hues and iridescence. Gorgeous and radiant in appearance!Mother of Pearl Care: Use mild soaps and water on mother of pearl to clean it, and avoid storing it with jewelry which may scratch it and wear away the luminous layers of nacre.
