In Jaipur, the Gem Manufacturing Industry is Over 300 Years Old, Which Also Happens to be the World’s Largest Center for Gemstone Cutting and Polishing. Round Cut: By far the most preferred gemstone shape, the round-brilliant cut is also the most optically brilliant because of its 360-degree symmetrical shape. A round-brilliant is a great choice if you want the most sparkle and the most enduring classic shape. The round shape has been cut for centuries. The round silhouette works with almost every mounting, from classic solitaires to the most avant-garde designs. Rounds can be set into four or six prongs, based on the design of the setting, or into bezel mountings (a metal band that runs around the edge of the gemstone to hold it securely in the setting).

About Marta:Staff Writer, Honolulu Advertiser - "A mollusk is not a pretty thing. At least from the outside. They are usually gray and craggy and covered with little craters that look like out-of-control warts. Of all the creatures in the ocean, a mollusk seems unlikely to be the one that would normally inspire art...until its shell is opened. Opening a mollusk can be like prying open a treasure box long hidden in the depths of the ocean. Iridescent colors explode from the shell, from pale gray-blues and soft golden tones to brilliant pinks, purples and greens. Now these gifts from the sea are being used to create one-of-a-kind wearable art by one of Hawai`i's jewelry designers Marta Howell of Kailua, on the Island of Oahu, Hawai`i." She begins with Mother-of-pearl, sometimes combining it with Corals and Semi-precious Stones such as Tourmaline, Peridot, Amethyst, Blue Topaz, Citrine and Garnet, as the muses move Her. David, her husband taught her silversmithing, and she uses silver to bind the pieces together. The effect is often of a silver frame around the shells and stones. Marta stated, "I see art in every piece of shell. It's a never-ending adventure. Taking layers from the shells was like finding a new world within the shell." Howell said the temperature of the ocean, age of the mollusk and algae and seaweed they eat help determine the colors the shells take on. Those from Sumatra have a golden hue; from Norway, blue-pink; and New Zealand's are green-blue. Howell said one of the properties she likes best about working with mother-of-pearl is that there is a shade that works with every skin color. When she is designing, she has six muses in mind, each is based on a woman she has known in real life. They range from a graceful, feminine Hawaiian woman to a businesswoman "with attitude." About Swiss Blue Topaz: Topaz is a silicate mineral of aluminium and fluorine. The crystals assume the geometrical form of prisms with only one end terminating regularly, and exhibit distinct pleochroism, double refraction, and strong electric powers. Icy blue topaz has a fire and sparkle that no other stone can imitate. It combines the clarity of topaz with the colors of the sky and the sea, ranging from velvety deep turquoise to pale robins egg with a multitude of shades in between including a white or colorless variety, which often passes for diamonds on account of its great brilliancy. The topaz holds the rank of 8 in the scale of hardness and it can cut glass, making it one of the harder gems. It has a specific gravity of 3.4–3.6 with a vitreous luster. Topaz is mined throughout the world in Brazil (Minas Gerais), Afghanistan, Australia, Myanmar (Burma), China, Japan, Madagascar, Mexico, Namibia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia (Urals, Transbaikalia), Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, and parts of the U.S. though the highest quality blue topaz is mined from Brazil, Sri Lanka, Nigeria and Burma. The gem known as a Brazilian Sapphire is actually Blue Topaz. Natural blue topaz, though, is extremely rare in nature. When blue topaz does occur naturally, it is nearly always so pale that it is almost colorless. Most all blue topaz available today is helped along by man with the application of irradiation and heat to allow precise control of the color achieved by the stone, making blue topaz extremely popular in jewelry collections that depend on permanent uniformity of color. Among the trade names for the various shades of blue are Sky blue, Swiss blue and London blue. The lightest of these shades is sky blue topaz, which resembles a watery summer sky, and darkest is the velvety blue of London blue which is dark enough to be mistaken for sapphire. Between the two, Swiss blue topaz offers a shimmering shade of blue that is close to the purest aquamarine. The most famous topaz is actually a colorless topaz that was originally thought to be a diamond. It is a 1,680 carat stone known as the "Braganza Diamond" set in the Portuguese Crown Jewels. About New Zealand Paua Shells: Paua is a species of abalone found only off the coast of New Zealand. It is the most vividly colored shell you can find - it outshines even the other species of abalone and makes wonderful jewelry. It has a range of blues and greens, often going into electric shades. Purples and pinks are fairly common. Yellows and other colors will also show. Many cultures believe paua is a symbol of good luck and prosperity. The color in the paua shell changes when viewed at different angles. This iridescence, similar to that of Mother of Pearl shell, but far more brilliant, is what makes paua shell so amazing a gem material for use in jewelry. It is truly one of nature's gifts. Each shell is different in it's color tones, and in the patterns within the shell. The black patterns in the shell come from layers of protein that are laid down between the layers of calcium that make up the shell. The brilliant colors are from light being refracted within the crystal layers. Paua Abalone is exclusively found in New Zealand and exhibits this amazing play of color on its shell surface quite similar to opals, thus earning its nickname the "Sea Opal". The most intensely colored Paua come from the cold waters off the southern coast of New Zealand. When found, the shells have a whitish lime coating. This is polished off to reveal the intensely colored "exterior" shell. The interior of the shell also has the same lovely colors.Abalone Shell Care: Use mild soaps and water on abalone to clean it, and avoid storing it with jewelry which may scratch it and wear away the luminous layers of nacre.
