About the Carver: Liliani is a gifted Master Shell and Beef Cow Bone Carver. Her husband is also a skilled Master artisan with Bone and Wood Carvings. Her skills also extend to Blister and Mabe pearls crafts. In fact, their entire family encompassing three generations are all involved in Oceania craftmaking as her eldest 13-yr old son is beginning to learn the trade. Liliani, her husband and five children currently reside on O`ahu, Hawai`i. She has honed her skills in the art of bone carving for over 15-years. Her skills extend to all sorts of Polynesian design craft influences from the various islands of the South Pacific covering Tonga, Samoa, Hawai`i, New Zealand, Fiji and Tahiti. She requires no layout, blueprints or manuals to carve a piece; She simply creates what her mind envisions from past cultural teachings of her heritage and from her inherent traits as a skilled carver. With each hand-carved piece, she can create amazing works of art. Each and every piece is 100% unique in its own right; it is not mass-produced, and there is no close duplication whatsoever. Her works reflect the passion and love she has as a Master Carver. I hope you will enjoy one or more of her mini-masterpieces created with mana (divine power) and the inherent traits of her generation teachings). I personally love all the special symbolism behind each bone piece she designs and creates. This Bone Carving was beautifully hand-carved by Liliani on O`ahu; I am proud to offer and bring her pieces to your home. About Hei-Matau: Derived from the Maori language, the words hei (something worn around the neck) and matau (fish hook) combine to create the Matau "Safety, Prosperity, Strength" tahei (necklace adornment). They were used as a practical tool for fishing and were often decorated as a sign of respect for the creatures of the sea. The hei matau is a traditional or modern unisex carving in the shape of a highly stylized fish hook from Maori culture. There are many styles of Hei-Matau from the true hook designs to the more ornamental styles. The fish-hook shape of the hei matau finds its strength origins in Maori legend, which holds that the North Island of New Zealand was once a huge fish that was caught by the great mariner Maui using only a woven line of hair and a bone hook. Legend holds that the shape of Hawke Bay is that of the hei matau, which caught in the fish's side. For the Maori, the hei matau is Taonga (cultural treasure). The Maori use fish in many of their traditional food dishes; Fish were so plentiful to the ancient Maori, that simple ownership of a fish hook meant prosperity. It not only represents their land, but also good luck, good health, peace, provision and prosperity, and fertility. Hei-Matau are also symbols of strength, determination, power, and authority which are held in great reverence by the Maori people. They also are often worn by travelers to provide protection and a safe passage when traveling over water. The wearer provides companionship, support in times of need, love, and food if the wearer is a hunter or fisherman. Traditionally, hei matau were always carved from whale bone. They came in several different forms ranging from the plain and utilitarian, used for catching fish, to the highly ornate, which served as treasured family heirlooms. Today, their main use is ornamental and they are commonly worn around the neck not only by Maori, but those who identify the hei matau as a symbol of New Zealand. In contemporary times, hei matau are commonly carved from beef cow bone or nephrite jade. Some Maori carvers continue to use whale bone, and such pieces are highly valued not only because of the beauty of whale bone and its cultural and historical significance, but also its scarcity. Current laws against hunting whales mean that Maori bone-carvers who carve in whale bone must use a combination of ancient standings or pre-existing supplies, or bones from whales that have recently beached. According to New Zealand tradition and law, Maori have first claim on part of the skeletons of any whales which beach themselves and are unable to be refloated. This however, is a very limited supply. About Manaia: A Guardian Protector, Energy. Te (the) Manaia is an ancient symbol and could be said to be one of the most widely used and developed elements in Maori Whakairo (carving) today. Te Manaia is an ancient Maori, bird-like mythical being-figure described in many ways as a protector and spiritual guardian angel. They can be described as the "unseen light" surrounding each individual. They can also be seen blended in with many other stylized Maori designs as with hei-matau (fish hooks), as a single or multiple stand alone, and with koru (spiral scrolls) while showing subtle differences between tribes. One interpretation of Manaia is derived from "mana" used throughout Oceania. In Maori, the Word Manaia is derived from mana (spiritual power, authority, influence, jurisdiction, and prestige) and ia (for a person). Manaia can mean to contain mana, or to cause something to have mana. This carving also represents the energy of one’s spirituality. The carving design is made from many things combined just like a combination of things that make up our spirituality. Te Manaia, as a Guardian Angel, has a special role in Maori culture and are said to be carriers of supernatural powers. They serve as messengers between the earthly world of mortals and the domain of the spirits. The Manaia is a holder of great spiritual energy, and is a spiritual guide to ward off danger and protect against intruders. Likened to a bird sitting on your shoulder, looking after ones spirit, and guiding your spirit where it is supposed to go. It is presented and contorted in innumerable ways, twisting and taking on an infinite variety of forms and filling an infinite variety of spaces. Traditionally, they are depicted as having the head of a bird, the body of a man and the tail of a fish to represent the sky (heavens), the earth, and the sea and the balance in between each. Te Manaia is described as a mythical bird-like person with the head in profile and coming to a point which gives the appearance of a beak. Sometimes the head portion was only used as a separate design to replace the hands and feet of an otherwise normal figure. Yet, the Manaia's eye must always be present as a watchful protector.
