- Symbolism: Tiki: Tikis hold a great significant value and are one of the most defining symbols in Polynesia and Oceania cultures. In mythology, Tikis either represented minor deities holding a specific mana (spiritual power) or as primary akua (mythological gods). Today, Tikis are regarded as a good luck charm when worn and are valued for the benefits and blessings they provide. They serve as protectors and are said to bring good fortune, protection from negative surroundings, long life, fertility, health, or safety depending on the minor deity or primary god depicted. About Hei-Koruru: A protection symbol. In the Maori language, hei (something worn around the neck) and koruru is the term for a carved human form (face or head) create this Maori Koruru "Protector" tahei (necklace adornment). In Maori traditions, the Koruru is typically attached to the gable (triangular portion of a wall between the edges of a sloping roof) or the maihi (the facing boards on the gable) of a whare (house) of which the lower ends are often ornamented with acarving. A koruru (carved face) on the gable often represents the ancestor after which the house is named and an attached or freestanding tekoteko (carved figure) on the gable represents a figurehead (of a canoe). They are often carved in a defiant stance with a protruding tongue to ward off intruders. Hei-Pikototoru (Triple Twist Infinity Loop): The Triple Twist carving represents the bonding of friendship (Interwoven lives are represented by keeping a special friendship extra close to your heart). The Triple Twist Infinity Loop is derived from the Maori language, piko (to bend, curve) and totoru (be threefold, triple) to create this blended Maori Triple Twist "Eternal Bonded Friendship" tahei (necklace adornment). Maori triple twists depict two new fern shoots growing together intertwined. A favorite of the Maori twist symbols, the Triple Twist represents the joining together of two peoples or two cultures in a loving friendly relationship for eternity, the never ending flow of energy representing close relationships and harmony with life. From time to time they may separate or move away from each other to pursue their own life journeys. Yet, one day their paths will cross again, always keeping them united for eternity. Even though they may experience the highs and lows of life, they remain bonded by friendship and loyalty for life. It tells of how the strengths of the bond of friendship, loyalty and love will last forever. The Triple Twist is also has an association to the Three Baskets of Knowledge. This is the story of how Tane, the Maori progenitor of mankind, of the forests and all the creatures of the forest, ascended through the 12 realms (heavens) to the uppermost realm, occupied only by Ko Io (The Supreme Being), and from there he obtained the wananga (sacred tribal knowledge) for the children of the primal parents and for mankind to come. Tane returned to Earth with the knowledge and created humankind from the Earth. Traditional Maori thinking presents us with three sources of knowledge. The First Basket called Kete-Aronui, there is the experience of our senses, which held all the knowledge that could help mankind; The Second Basket called Kete-Tuauri, there is our understanding of what lies behind our senses experience, which held the knowledge of ritual, memory and prayer; and the Third Basket called Kete-Tuaatea, there is the experience we have, particularly in ritual, of our oneness with each other and with the past, which contained the knowledge of evil or Makutu or things that were harmful for mankind to avoid. Portioned out, and planted into Mother Earth; the life principle of humankind comes forth the dawn into the world of light. Puhoro(Curled Lines): This particular tahei also emphasizes its motif of the Maori Pohuro on Wheka's protruding tongue. The Maori Puhoro is a type of Moko (Tattoo) pattern traditionally worn on the arms or legs. The hand-carved puhoro design on this tiki is based on traditional Maori Ta Moko tattooing patterns. The design depicts the wake of a canoe, gliding at speed across the water with rippling waves following close behind. As with all Maori designs, it carries a spiritual meaning. The Puhoro represents swiftness, agility, strength, and courage of character. Ripo Ripo (Dots): Reminds Us There Will Be Trials to Work Through During Our Life's Path and Also Represents Your Posterity (Descendants) and the Passing down of Your Knowledge and Experiences to Them. Paua Abalone Shells: The Paua Shell Resembles the Beauty That Surrounds You, and Within Oneself to Have High Self-Esteem and Awareness of What is Happening Around You.

In fact, their family encompassing three generations are all involved in craftmaking as their eldest 13-yr old son is beginning to learn the trade. Semisi, his wife and five children currently reside on O`ahu,Hawai`i. He has been carving since his early 20’s. His skills extend to all sorts of Polynesian design craft influences from the various islands of the South Pacific covering Tonga, Samoa, Hawai`i, New Zealand, Fiji and Tahiti. His skills require no blueprints or manuals to carve a piece. He simply creates what his mind envisions from his past cultural teachings of his heritage and from his inherent traits as a skilled carver. With each hand-carved piece, he can create amazing works of art. Each and every piece is 100% unique in its own right; it is not mass-produced, and there is no close duplication whatsoever. His works reflect the passion and love he has as a Master Carver. I hope you will enjoy one or more of his mini-masterpieces created with mana (divine power) and the inherent traits of his generation teachings).
