- Symbolism: The flower symbolism associated with the gardenia is you're lovely, secret love or "I love you in secret", purity and refinement. Gardenia plants are prized for the strong sweet scent of their flowers, which can be very large in some species. Tiare (Gardenia taitensis) known as the Star-shaped Tahitian Gardenia and the Hawaiian Nanu or Kiele is said to be one of the many indigenous flowers of Hawai`i. However, some believe it was introduced to the Hawaiian Islands less than 100 years ago, while others believe the flower to be an ancient introduction throughout Polynesia via the Cook Islands, Society Islands and the Solomon Islands. According to one of the few Hawaiian Master Lei-makers, native gardenias, Nanu, once grew in the wetlands and forests on all of the major Hawaiian Islands. The native plants are rare now, but Nanu leis were always considered prized possessions, preferred by the ancient Hawaiians for their beautiful petals and especially for their heavy, sweet hypnotic-scented fragrance. In the legend of Ka'ala and Ka'aiali'i, the wahine of Lana'i presented Nānū leis to Kamehameha and others when they came to Maui for sport. The white blossom of Tiare flowers grows on trees and is related to the species of Gardenia. It gives out sweet fragrances that inspire the many types of floral perfumes, colognes, bath salts, lotions, oils, soaps and candles made in Hawai`i and throughout the South Pacific Islands. Nanu trees have a lifespan of over fifty years and can grow trunks with diameters of over two feet wide.
