- Lapis Lazuli Stone: Square Cabochon Approx. Just Under 13/16" X Just Over 13/16" Long X Just Under 1/4" Deep; Total Carat Weight: Approx.19.73 Cts Total Lapis; Gem Grade: Very Good (The Grading of Lapis Does Not Use the Same Methods For Grading Colored Semi-Precious Gemstones). There are no such lettering grades used for Lapis Lazuli; the Terms Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Fine Are Used. Quality grading is according to its natural, unenhanced coloration with good saturation throughout. Inclusions of visible golden pyrite does not downgrade value. High quality jewelry utilizes stones with a very intense and deep blue with subtle speckles of pyrite. There is no one particular factor that determines the grade; it is a combination of factors. With Lapis, perhaps more than with any other gemstone, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The stone you like the most is the stone that's right for you, regardless of its perceived grade and quality. Although already considered a rare, semi-precious stone, the cutting of Lapis is also very costly since there is a tremendous loss of material when specific shapes are created. Therefore, a precisely cut bead or a perfectly shaped cabochon or pendant is more expensive than a freeform one. Source/Notes: Mined From the Koksha Valley, Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan.

About Marta: Staff Writer, Honolulu Advertiser - "A mollusk is not a pretty thing. At least from the outside. They are usually gray and craggy and covered with little craters that look like out-of-control warts. Of all the creatures in the ocean, a mollusk seems unlikely to be the one that would normally inspire art...until its shell is opened. Opening a mollusk can be like prying open a treasure box long hidden in the depths of the ocean. Iridescent colors explode from the shell, from pale gray-blues and soft golden tones to brilliant pinks, purples and greens. Now these Gifts from the Sea™ are being used to create one-of-a-kind wearable art by one of Hawai`i's jewelry designers Marta Howell of Kailua, on the Island of Oahu, Hawai`i." She begins with Mother-of-pearl, sometimes combining it with Corals and Semi-precious Stones such as Tourmaline, Peridot, Amethyst, Blue Topaz, Citrine and Garnet, as the muses move Her. David, her husband taught her silversmithing, and she uses silver to bind the pieces together. The effect is often of a silver frame around the shells and stones. Marta stated, "I see art in every piece of shell. It's a never-ending adventure. Taking layers from the shells was like finding a new world within the shell." Howell said the temperature of the ocean, age of the mollusk and algae and seaweed they eat help determine the colors the shells take on. Those from Sumatra have a golden hue; from Norway, blue-pink; and New Zealand's are green-blue. Howell said one of the properties she likes best about working with mother-of-pearl is that there is a shade that works with every skin color. When she is designing, she has six muses in mind, each is based on a woman she has known in real life. They range from a graceful, feminine Hawaiian woman to a businesswoman "with attitude." Topaz Care and Cleaning Tips: Do not use an ultrasonic cleaner on your garnet jewelry. Put your jewelry on last and take it off first. Always complete your makeup before putting on your jewelry so that the chemicals in hairspray and makeup won't damage it and you will have to clean it less often. Remove your jewelry before doing any housework or yard work to prevent the possibility of breaking a clasp or the gemstone itself. Topaz, like diamond, has perfect basal cleavage; a sharp blow from the right direction will split it perfectly along its cleavage line. Avoid exposing your topaz to harsh chemicals, particularly acids. Keep topaz out of direct sunlight and extreme temperatures because the sun and heat can potentially alter its color. To keep your Topaz looking sparkly and bright, use warm water and add mild dishwashing liquid to the water, clean the stones with a soft cloth or toothbrush. Rinse the jewelry with warm water and pat it dry. To Store your topaz Jewelry, Wrap each piece in its own cloth to keep it from touching other pieces. Place each piece in its own compartment in your jewelry box, separate from other gemstones because harder stones will scratch softer ones. Diamonds, corundum (rubies and sapphires) and alexandrite are harder than topaz, while aquamarines, emeralds and garnets are softer. Store your jewelry in a cool place out of direct sunlight. Jewelry Handling: It is Not Recommended to Use Harsh Cleaners, Detergents, Soaps, Shampoos, Jewelry Cloths or Jewelry Liquids, Chemicals, Chlorine, Body or Tanning Lotions, Ultrasonic Cleaners, Tarnish Creams, Showering, Swimming in Pools or Hot Tubs or the Ocean With Natural Stone and Gemstone Adorned Silver Jewelry. About Lapis: Lapis lazuli is a relatively rare semi-precious stone that has been prized since antiquity for its intense blue color. Lapis lazuli has been mined from mines in the Badakhshan province of Afghanistan for over 6,000 years. In addition to the Afghan deposits, lapis has been extracted for many years in the Andes, Russia, Siberia, Angola, Burma, Pakistan, Canada, India, and the USA in California and Colorado. Trade in the stone is ancient enough for lapis jewelry to have been found at Predynastic Egyptian sites, and as lapis beads at neolithic burials in Mehrgarh, the Caucasus, and even as far from Afghanistan as Mauritania. Lapis lazuli is a rock, largely formed from the mineral lazurite. The main component of lapis lazuli is lazurite (25% to 40%), a feldspathoid silicate mineral. Most lapis lazuli also contains calcite (white), sodalite (blue), and pyrite (metallic yellow). Lapis lazuli usually occurs in crystalline marble as a result of contact metamorphism. The finest color is intense blue, lightly dusted with small flecks of golden pyrite. Stones with no white calcite veins and only small pyrite inclusions are more prized. Patches of pyrite are an important help in identifying the stone as genuine and does not detract from its value. Often, inferior lapis is dyed to improve its color, producing a very dark blue with a noticeable grey cast which may also appear as a milky shade. Lapis takes an excellent polish and can be made into jewelry, carvings, boxes, mosaics, ornaments, and vases. Lapis is Latin for "Stone" and lazuli the genitive form of the Medieval Latin lazulum, which is from Persian lazhward, the name of a place where lapis lazuli was mined. The name of the place came to be associated with the stone mined there and, eventually, with its color. The English word azure, the French azur, the Italian azzurro, the Spanish and the Portuguese azul are cognates. Taken as a whole, lapis lazuli means "Stone of Lazhward". The best lapis lazuli is found in limestone in the Koksha River valley of Badakhshan province in northeastern Afghanistan, where the Sar-e-Sang mine deposits have been worked for more than 6,000 years. Afghanistan was the source of lapis for the ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilizations, as well as the later Greeks and Romans. In ancient Egypt, lapis lazuli was a favorite stone for amulets and ornaments such as scarabs; it was also used by the Assyrians and Babylonians for seals. Lapis jewelry has been found at excavations of the Predynastic Egyptian site Naqada (3300–3100 BC), and powdered lapis was used as eyeshadow by Cleopatra. In ancient times, lapis lazuli was known as sapphire. Lapis Care: Splash sparingly with a mixture of mild liquid soap and cool water (1 teaspoon of soap to 1 cup water); Rinse quickly with clean, cool water (If rinsing in a sink, be sure the drain is plugged!); Quickly Dry off with a soft, clean, absorbent cloth; Leave the piece on a towel for an extended period of time to ensure it is completely dry. Don't use hot water, a steamer or an ultrasonic cleaner; Don't soak in water; Never use an Ultrasonic Cleaner. Store separately away from other gemstones.
