- Symbolism: Red is the color of health, strength, physical energy, sex, passion, courage and protection. It is associated with blood, birth, death and intense emotions. Red symbolizes excitement and power. It is the color of love as seen in the red Valentine's Day heart. When good fortune arrives it is called a "red-letter day". Blue is the color of the element of Water. It symbolizes the ocean, sleep, the sky, and twilight. Pacifying, peaceful, refreshing and calming, it denotes stability and harmony. Blue is associated with healing, psychism, patience, confidence, happiness and loyalty. Turquoise is known to bring good fortune, protection from harm, and symbolizes friendship. It assists one in looking at the past with an unbiased eye and allowing for the lessons to be learned and the decisions honored. Turquoise also symbolizes earth, good health, hope, prosperity, and success. Because of its hard casing, the Shell is a protective image, protecting life (sheltering pearls for example) and also symbolizes the protective quality love sometimes takes. In Roman mythology, Venus, the goddess of love, was said to be created from the foam carried ashore atop a scallop shell. The Hindu goddess Lakshmi was said to also be created from the grit and pearls within the shell. Also in Hinduism the conch shell is symbolic because it awakens the heart of the faithful and calls to those who live with heart-filled love.

About Marta: Staff Writer, Honolulu Advertiser - "A mollusk is not a pretty thing. At least from the outside. They are usually gray and craggy and covered with little craters that look like out-of-control warts. Of all the creatures in the ocean, a mollusk seems unlikely to be the one that would normally inspire art...until its shell is opened. Opening a mollusk can be like prying open a treasure box long hidden in the depths of the ocean. Iridescent colors explode from the shell, from pale gray-blues and soft golden tones to brilliant pinks, purples and greens. Now these Gifts from the Sea™ are being used to create one-of-a-kind wearable art by one of Hawai`i's jewelry designers Marta Howell of Kailua, on the Island of Oahu, Hawai`i." She begins with Mother-of-pearl, sometimes combining it with Corals and Semi-precious Stones such as Tourmaline, Peridot, Amethyst, Blue Topaz, Citrine and Garnet, as the muses move Her. David, her husband taught her silversmithing, and she uses silver to bind the pieces together. The effect is often of a silver frame around the shells and stones. Marta stated, "I see art in every piece of shell. It's a never-ending adventure. Taking layers from the shells was like finding a new world within the shell." Howell said the temperature of the ocean, age of the mollusk and algae and seaweed they eat help determine the colors the shells take on. Those from Sumatra have a golden hue; from Norway, blue-pink; and New Zealand's are green-blue. Howell said one of the properties she likes best about working with mother-of-pearl is that there is a shade that works with every skin color. When she is designing, she has six muses in mind, each is based on a woman she has known in real life. They range from a graceful, feminine Hawaiian woman to a businesswoman "with attitude." About Sleeping Beauty Mountain Turquoise Mine: The Sleeping Beauty Mining company has been mining turquoise for fine jewelers for over a decade. This mine is one of the largest in North America and is still operating. The Sleeping Beauty Mountain was originally mined for copper and gold, but for over a decade now, they have been mining some of the best turquoise in the world from this historic area. Sleeping Beauty Turquoise™ only used to be available as a cut stone or in traditional southwest and contemporary turquoise jewelry. However, now it is available in its rough natural form, as tumbled nuggets and gift items directly from the mine. Considered to be one of the highest quality Turquoise stones available worldwide, Sleeping Beauty Turquoise™ comes from the Sleeping Beauty Mine located near Globe, Arizona. Sleeping Beauty Turquoise™ got its name from the mountain which resembles a lady lying down in slumber. Sleeping Beauty turquoise™ is known as Persian Turquoise, which refers to a unique variety of turquoise that is 'matrix-free,' with no veining. Its turquoise occurs in association with granite host-rock. The gorgeous color ranges this turquoise is noted for is from a Royal Blue to a very light Sky Blue. Sleeping Beauty Turquoise™ is all "natural, 100% untreated turquoise direct from the Sleeping Beauty Mountain. These high grade Persian turquoise gems bring sheer elegance from just a simple natural solitaire to sensational and breathtaking pieces when adorned with various metals and element materials. Historically, Sleeping Beauty Turquoise™ has been closely associated with the Zuni culture of the southwest. Sleeping Beauty Turquoise™ is the favorite of the Zuni Pueblo silversmiths for use in petit point, needlepoint, and inlay jewelry. This Marta Howell Piece was adorned with an exquisite Sleeping Beauty Turquoise™ accent. Turquoise Care: Being a phosphate mineral, turquoise is inherently fragile and sensitive to solvents; perfume and other cosmetics will attack the finish and may alter the color of turquoise gems, as will certain skin oils, and most all commercial jewelry cleaning fluids. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may also discolor or dehydrate turquoise. Care should therefore be taken when wearing such jewels: cosmetics, including sunscreen and hair spray, should be applied before putting on turquoise jewelry, and they should not be worn to a beach or other sun-bathed environment. After use, turquoise should be gently cleaned with a soft cloth to avoid a build up of residue, and should be stored in its own container to avoid scratching by harder gems. Turquoise can also be adversely affected if stored in an airtight container.Jewelry Handling:It is Not Recommended to Use Harsh Cleaners, Detergents, Soaps, Shampoos, Jewelry Cloths or Jewelry Liquids, Chemicals, Chlorine, Body or Tanning Lotions, Ultrasonic Cleaners, Tarnish Creams, Showering, Swimming in Pools or Hot Tubs or the Ocean With Natural Seashell and Gemstone Adorned Silver Jewelry. About Pacific Spiny Oysters: Spondylus is a genus of bivalve mollusks, the only genus in the family Spondylidae. As well as being the systematic name, Spondylus is the most often used common name for these animals, though they are also known as thorny oysters or spiny oysters. There are many species of Spondylus, and they vary considerably in appearance and range. The Pacific Spiny Oyster (Spondylus Princeps Broderip) is found in the Sea of Cortez, Baja California, Mexico. They are grouped in the same superfamily as the scallops, but like the true oysters (family Ostreidae) they cement themselves to rocks, rather than attaching themselves by a byssus. Their key characteristic is that the two parts of their shells are hinged together with a ball and socket type of hinge, rather than a toothed hinge as is more common in other bivalves. Spondylus shells are much sought after by collectors, and there is a lively commercial market in them. It was discovered in 1976 and began to be exported for jewelry making use in the Southwest by Indian Crafts people. The shell comes in a variety of colors but mainly in red, orange, and purple; sometimes yellow and white or a mixture of these as in purple with yellow. Pricing is factored into the ease or difficulty of shells obtained based upon the color of the oyster's shell. The more purple the shell, the more cost-effective the price is; the more orange the shell, the most expensive the price is. This is due to the depth ranges at which these shells are fished from. Spiny oysters in shallower depths exhibit a more vivid purplish color background and are easier to obtain. The Spiny oysters retrieved from mid-level depths display a more deep reddish color background and are somewhat difficult to obtain; and the shells that are at the very deepest of depths display a gorgeous, bright orange color background and are very difficult to obtain. The name Spondylus is a Latin word that means spines on it's back. Broderip was the name of the Scientist who traveled with Cortez when Baja California was discovered and explored. The name Princep was given to this shell because when Cortez presented his marine discovers to the king ofSpain who financed his expedition, the king's daughter fell in love with the shell. Therefore, the shell was named the after the Princess. Shell Care: Use mild soaps and water on these oyster shells to clean it, and avoid storing it with jewelry which may scratch it and wear away the polished surface shell layers.
