About the Chinese Fenghuang (Phoenix):The Fenghuang are mythological birds ofEast Asiathat reign over all other birds. The males are called Feng and the females Huang. In modern times, however, such a distinction of gender is often no longer made and the Feng and Huang are blurred into a single feminine entity so that the bird can be paired with the Chinese dragon, which has male connotations. In the West, it is commonly referred to as the Chinese phoenix. A celestial sign to the Chinese, thePhoenixis the king of the winged kingdom. Magnificent and legendary, this bird is synonymous with good fortune, opportunity, and luck. It also conveys strength and resilience in the symbolic rising from its own ashes and soars to greater heights. On its own, thePhoenixis a Yang symbol and is associated with fire energies and the four winds. Combined with the Dragon thePhoenixrepresents Yin energy. As a point of spiritual focus, the Phoenixevokes in us the five human qualities of good cosmic energy, or Chi: Virtue, Duty and Responsibility, Proper Behavior (right attitude), Compassion, Reliability and Loyalty. Chinese traditions cite it as living atop the Kunlun Mountainsin northernChina. Its body symbolizes the six celestial bodies. The head is the sky, the eyes are the sun, the back is the moon, the wings are the wind, the feet are the earth, and the tail is the planets. Its feathers contain the five fundamental colors: black, white, red, blue and yellow. These colors are said to represent the Confucian virtues of: loyalty, honesty, decorum, and justice. Each part of Fenghuang's body symbolizes a word, the head represents virtue, the wing represents duty, the back represents propriety, the abdomen says belief and the chest represents mercy. Images of an ancient bird have appeared inChinafor over 4,000 years, the earliest as Shang Dynasty pottery motifs, then appearing decorating bronzes, as well as jade figurines (many of the most beautiful from the Liao Period). During the Han Dynasty (2,200 years ago) and later dynasties, two phoenixes, one a male (feng) and the other a female (huang) were often shown together facing one another. During the Yuan Dynasty the two terms were merged to become the generally translated "phoenix", but the "King of Birds" came to symbolize the Empress when paired with a dragon as a dragon represented the Emperor. During the Ming Dynasty, the feng huang was used as a symbol representing the direction south and was continued to display the male facing the female. Fenghuang seems to have no connection with the phoenix of the Western world, which derives from Egyptian mythology. The Fenghuang has very positive connotations. It is a symbol of high virtue and grace. The Fenghuang also symbolizes the union of yin and yang. In ancientChina, they can often be found in the decorations for weddings or royalty, along with dragons. This is because the Chinese considered the dragon and phoenix symbolic of blissful relations between husband and wife, another common yin and yang metaphor. In some traditions it appears in good times but hides during times of trouble, while in other traditions it appeared only to mark the beginning of a new era. InChinaandJapanit was a symbol of the imperial house, and it represented fire, the sun, justice, obedience, and fidelity. To the Chinese, if a phoenix was used to decorate a house it symbolized that loyalty and honesty were in the people that lived there. Or alternatively, phoenix only stays when the ruler is without darkness and corruption. The phoenix represented power sent from the heavens to the empress and is the emblem of the empress as a harbinger of good fortune. About Ming's Inc.©: Hawaiian Tropical to Asian Exotic, Stunningly Spectacular, and Rewardingly Addictive! With incredible detailing, Ming's started producing and selling hand-carved ivory and jade jewelry in the early 1940s and continued into the late 1990s. The premier name in Hawaiian jewelry, Ming's was first listed in the 1940-41 Directory of the City and County of Honolulu. Their business name was likely derived from the Ming ruling dynasty of China from 1368 to 1644, "One of the greatest eras of orderly government and social stability in human history". Ming's jewelry reflects the popular images of its time and has become a cultural icon sought by vintage collectors worldwide. Tropical flowers, tikis, warriors and other representations of Hawaii were available in silver, ivory, and silver-ivory combinations. The gifted jeweler Wook Moon and his family opened the first jewelry store at the Fort Street Mall in 1941, six months before the outbreak of World War II. Despite the grim outlook then, the little store became a household name among working women and tourists. During those days, Ming’s offered a generous, no-interest layaway plan, so that many of the downtown Honolulu secretaries, not highly paid women at that time, were able to buy something. As the business rapidly grew, the Ming family expanded with a string of stores on the mainland, ranging from San Francisco to Miami, and goods were also sold through catalogs. Mr. Moon personally designed most of the jewelry and often created the pieces himself. Apprentices also were trained to reproduce his designs, as well as other well-known Hawaii artists commissioned to create pieces. Cast and hand-wrought sterling silver pieces were stamped on the back with "MING'S," and all ivory pieces were hand signed "Ming's" in ink usually with a description of the piece, such as "Ming's Honolulu Ivory Plumeria Blossom." The earliest ivory pieces were hand signed "Ming's" in reddish brown ink, and then in later years "Ming's" was printed in black ink. They were always signed on the ivory and stamped on the sterling silver. Sterling with tinted or dyed ivory pieces were the most popular sellers and some of the most spectacular pieces made. Ming's was best known for its trade secret process of tinting ivory. Collectors seek the tinted designs out with a vengeance and they have become quite pricey. However, compared to gold and diamonds they are more reasonably priced, yet much harder to come by. Ivory was used to recreate almost every flower and plant that grows in Hawaii. Earrings, pins, necklaces and bracelets were the most common pieces. Wonderful ivory plumeria or frangipani blossom designs are still worn today for the memories of paradise they recall. At one time, Ming's also designed the ivory wings worn by Hawaiian Airlines' flight staff, as well as ivory plumeria earrings worn by stewardesses to complement the fresh plumeria flowers in their hair. One of Ming's most unusual and appealing lines was the pierced gold line; all pieces being originally designed by Mr. Moon himself. He used the ancient symbols of China to give rings, earrings, bracelets, pendants and necklaces a powerful and exotic appeal. The dragon, phoenix, bird in plum tree, lotus, chrysanthemum, peony, bamboo, and Chinese characters giving blessings of long life and good fortune were all used as motifs in this jewelry. Jewelry sold at Ming's of past, greatly played a leading role in today's jewelry designs of Hawaii. In Hawaii, pieces from Ming's have become family treasures handed down from generation to generation. Daughters seek items similar to those worn by their mothers and shoppers at shows will stop at a booth and become nostalgic if they spot a necklace like the one grandma wore. The articles are costly however, reasonably in-line with the rich detailing and the hours of labor needed to hand-create each piece. Brooches can be priced from about $200 to $600 and some complete sets can be $2000 or higher. Collectors avidly seek out vintage pieces made by Ming's. Dealers and their customers feel the workmanship is excellent and the knowledgeable can recognize the pieces almost immediately. The favorite Hawaiian motifs are done in sterling or sterling embellished with carved ivory. Classic depictions of the islands' flowers such as anthurium, hibiscus, birds of paradise, orchids and pikake are rendered in brooches, necklaces, earrings and rings. Their most popular pieces collected today are hand carved ivory and sterling silver brooches, earrings, bracelets of Hawaiian flowers, leaves, tropical sea life, Polynesian warriors and the famous Chinese phoenix bird carved in jade. Throughout the years, Mr. Moon purchased jade material on regular buying trips made to Burma, Hong Kong, and Guatemala. When Ming's created Hawaiian flowers, Chinese flowers, they rarely did a flat leaf; their plumeria have defined curves that make them look realistic and natural. It was obvious that Mr. Moon spent hours studying nature, which raised questions about his anthuriums. Some anthuriums grow with their spadix (spikes) downward towards the wider, cleavage-end of the spathe, believed by many as its natural appearance. Some species do bend down; however, his anthurium earrings and brooches are made to be worn in a way where the spadix points upward towards the narrow point of the spathe, which is a more common appearance of many wild grown varieties. As with most jewelry collections, it's often those pieces that no one bought, because of a high price or unpopularity, which becomes so rare and much more desirable to future generations. At Ming's of old, an Uli`uli (Gourd Rattle Hula Instrument) design that would have sold in the 1940s for $14.40 in pin form and an additional $4.80 for matching sterling earrings are selling today for over $2,500 in a full completed set. Today there is a lot of competition for pieces that typically sell for more than $300. Rare ivory designs carved by Mr. Moon himself, might go for $2,000. Ming's last retail site, the one in Honolulu, closed in October of 1999. For authenticity, please be aware that a true Ming's of Hawaii© gold or silver piece is always hallmark stamped with "MING'S" and its respective metal karat content. Today, we are reliving Ming’s “dynasty” by honoring the legacy of an artist whose eclectic creations brought joy to generations of women. From Managing Director and Grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Wook Moon: "Ming’s was a well-respected and venerable firm, which operated from Honolulu, Hawaii for almost 60 years, selling its own originally designed handmade pieces from the early 1940’s to its closing in 1999. The concept developed out of my grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Wook Moon’s years of living in Shanghai, China in the 1930’s where they came to study the history and appreciate the arts, antiquities, and ornaments of this ancient civilization. On their return to Hawaii in 1941, they opened a small storefront in downtown Honolulu and named it Ming’s. Known for delicately carved tropical floral motifs and multi-color jade and pearl designs, Ming’s was long considered the preeminent name for Hawaiian and Asian Heritage jewelry. Ming’s of Hawaii© is pleased to announce the reintroduction of its specialty pierced gold jewelry line! We hope that you will find this jewelry not only comfortable to wear, elegant and chic, but that in owning a piece, you become part of a long tradition of “owning a Ming’s.”
