Grading Larimar: There is No Such Lettering Grades Used for Larimar, the Terms Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good and Fine are Used. Quality grading is according to coloration. White being a low quality, high quality jewelry utilizes stones between sky-blue and volcanic blue. Greenish colorations are not well regarded, unless the green is intense. Red colored inclusions in Larimar indicate traces of iron. There is no one particular factor that determines the grade; it is a combination of factors. With Larimar, perhaps more than with any other gemstone, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some prefer the very light blues, others prefer stones tending toward green, and while others prefer Larimar with mineral spots, some prefer no patterning at all. The stone you like the most is the stone that's right for you, regardless of its perceived grade and quality. Cutting Larimar is also very costly. There is a tremendous loss of material when specific shapes are created. Therefore, a precisely cut bead or a perfectly shaped cabochon or pendant is more expensive than a freeform one. About Marta: Staff Writer, Honolulu Advertiser - "A mollusk is not a pretty thing. At least from the outside. They are usually gray and craggy and covered with little craters that look like out-of-control warts. Of all the creatures in the ocean, a mollusk seems unlikely to be the one that would normally inspire art...until its shell is opened. Opening a mollusk can be like prying open a treasure box long hidden in the depths of the ocean. Iridescent colors explode from the shell, from pale gray-blues and soft golden tones to brilliant pinks, purples and greens. Now these Gifts from the Sea™ are being used to create one-of-a-kind wearable art by one of Hawai`i's jewelry designers Marta Howell of Kailua, on the Island of Oahu, Hawai`i." She begins with Mother-of-pearl, sometimes combining it with Corals and Semi-precious Stones such as Tourmaline, Peridot, Amethyst, Blue Topaz, Citrine and Garnet, as the muses move Her. David, her husband taught her silversmithing, and she uses silver to bind the pieces together. The effect is often of a silver frame around the shells and stones. Marta stated, "I see art in every piece of shell. It's a never-ending adventure. Taking layers from the shells was like finding a new world within the shell." Howell said the temperature of the ocean, age of the mollusk and algae and seaweed they eat help determine the colors the shells take on. Those from Sumatra have a golden hue; from Norway, blue-pink; and New Zealand's are green-blue. Howell said one of the properties she likes best about working with mother-of-pearl is that there is a shade that works with every skin color. When she is designing, she has six muses in mind, each is based on a woman she has known in real life. They range from a graceful, feminine Hawaiian woman to a businesswoman "with attitude." About Blue Pectolite: The only source of Larimar in entire the world is from the Dominican Republic. Larimar (also lorimar) is a rare blue variety form of pectolite, an acid silicate hydrate of sodium, calcium and manganese. It is a beautiful gemstone with an extraordinary blue-green appearance similar to the color of the tropical Caribbean Sea. Although pectolite is found in many locations, none have the unique blue coloration of Larimar. This blue color, distinct from other pectolites, is the result of cobalt substitution for calcium. Its coloration varies from white, light-blue, sky blue, green-blue to deep blue. The deep blue variant is known as volcanic blue. The unique color makes it a fine semi-precious gemstone, that is much more expensive than other pectolites. It has a Mohs hardness between 4.5-7.0, an average S.G. of 2.7 and is used as an ornamental stone and semi-precious stone for jewelry. This unique gemstone sometimes may be mistaken for turquoise. Its luster is vitreous to silky, it’s transparent to translucent and it normally contains white streaks. This semi-precious stone conquers little by little an important recognition at an international level, because of its peculiarity and the rare beauty of the color it displays. Why is Larimar so expensive? For a very rare and very unique stone, it has beautiful colors and patterning, is excellent for jewelry because of its hardness, and it has very desirable metaphysical properties. The stone is also in high demand due to its rarity. The reason it is expensive is simply due to its very limited supply. It is a single source stone with a deposit in an area of less than one square mile. It is arduously mined in a remote mountain range manually by hand and takes a tremendous amount of effort to find. There are long periods of time when little or no stone is being excavated and more then 90% of the extracted stone is not suitable for Jewelry use. Perhaps the question should be why isn’t it more expensive? Larimar Care and Cleaning Tips: Larimar is a very hard and durable stone however certain chemicals such as those found in some cleaning supplies can "etch" the surface of the stone leaving it looking dull. Your jewelry can be maintained with a non abrasive jewelry cleaner, one that is rated for pearls, which will not damage your Larimar. We recommend purchasing a jewelry polishing cloth, they are quite inexpensive and will last a very long time. You can then buff each piece before you store it, this will remove any dirt and oils from your body, both of which will speed up the tarnishing process. Avoid exposing your Larimar jewelry to household detergents, especially bleach which can discolor the stone and the setting. Perfumes, cosmetics and hairspray can also damage jewelry as can chlorine in a swimming pool or hot tub. Store Larimar carefully, preferably in a separate jewelry compartment, a chamois bag or in tissue. Jewelry Handling: It is Not Recommended to Use Harsh Cleaners, Detergents, Soaps, Shampoos, Jewelry Cloths or Jewelry Liquids, Chemicals, Chlorine, Body or Tanning Lotions, Ultrasonic Cleaners, Tarnish Creams, Showering, Swimming in Pools or Hot Tubs or the Ocean With Natural Stone and Gemstone Adorned Silver Jewelry. Topaz Care and Cleaning Tips: Do not use an ultrasonic cleaner on your garnet jewelry. Put your jewelry on last and take it off first. Always complete your makeup before putting on your jewelry so that the chemicals in hairspray and makeup won't damage it and you will have to clean it less often. Remove your jewelry before doing any housework or yard work to prevent the possibility of breaking a clasp or the gemstone itself. Topaz, like diamond, has perfect basal cleavage; a sharp blow from the right direction will split it perfectly along its cleavage line. Avoid exposing your topaz to harsh chemicals, particularly acids. Keep topaz out of direct sunlight and extreme temperatures because the sun and heat can potentially alter its color. To keep your Topaz looking sparkly and bright, use warm water and add mild dishwashing liquid to the water, clean the stones with a soft cloth or toothbrush. Rinse the jewelry with warm water and pat it dry. To Store your Garnet Jewelry, Wrap each piece of garnet jewelry in its own cloth to keep it from touching other pieces. Place each piece in its own compartment in your jewelry box, separate from other gemstones because harder stones will scratch softer ones. Diamonds, corundum (rubies and sapphires) and alexandrite are harder than topaz, while aquamarines, emeralds and garnets are softer. Store your jewelry in a cool place out of direct sunlight.
