About Marta: Staff Writer, Honolulu Advertiser - "A mollusk is not a pretty thing. At least from the outside. They are usually gray and craggy and covered with little craters that look like out-of-control warts. Of all the creatures in the ocean, a mollusk seems unlikely to be the one that would normally inspire art...until its shell is opened. Opening a mollusk can be like prying open a treasure box long hidden in the depths of the ocean. Iridescent colors explode from the shell, from pale gray-blues and soft golden tones to brilliant pinks, purples and greens. Now these Gifts from the Sea™ are being used to create one-of-a-kind wearable art by one of Hawai`i's jewelry designers Marta Howell of Kailua, on the Island of Oahu, Hawai`i." She begins with Mother-of-pearl, sometimes combining it with Corals and Semi-precious Stones such as Tourmaline, Peridot, Amethyst, Blue Topaz, Citrine and Garnet, as the muses move Her. David, her husband taught her silversmithing, and she uses silver to bind the pieces together. The effect is often of a silver frame around the shells and stones. Marta stated, "I see art in every piece of shell. It's a never-ending adventure. Taking layers from the shells was like finding a new world within the shell." Howell said the temperature of the ocean, age of the mollusk and algae and seaweed they eat help determine the colors the shells take on. Those from Sumatra have a golden hue; from Norway, blue-pink; and New Zealand's are green-blue. Howell said one of the properties she likes best about working with mother-of-pearl is that there is a shade that works with every skin color. When she is designing, she has six muses in mind, each is based on a woman she has known in real life. They range from a graceful, feminine Hawaiian woman to a businesswoman "with attitude." About Sugilite: Sugilite (aka sugalite, luvulite) is a relatively rare pink to purple cyclosilicate mineral with a complex chemical formula. Sugilite crystallizes in the hexagonal system with prismatic crystals. The crystals are rarely found and the form is usually massive. It has a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6.5 and a specific gravity of 2.75 to 2.80. It is mostly translucent. Sugilite was first described in 1944 by the Japanese petrologist Ken-ichi Sugi (1901–1948) for an occurrence on Iwagi Islet, Japan, where it is found in an aegirine syenite intrusive stock. It is found in a similar environment at Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec, Canada. In the Wessels mine in northern Cape Province of South Africa, sugilite is mined from a strata-bound manganese deposit. It is also reported from Liguria and Tuscany, Italy; New South Wales, Australia; and Madhya Pradesh, India. The mineral is commonly pronounced with a soft "g", as in "ginger". However, as with most minerals, its pronunciation is intended to be the same as the person it is named after; in this case, the Japanese name Sugi has a hard "g", as in "geese". Beautiful violet-purple Sugilite is considered one of the most important love stones and a major spiritual stone, promoting wisdom, individual and universal love by bringing light and love to the darkest situations and aids in forgiveness by eliminating hostility. Sugilite is said to help with understanding the “big questions” in life by teaching you how to live from your own truth. Especially helpful for those who feel alienated and alone, Sugilite helps the user to understand the purpose for their existence, and the reason for their life lessons. Known as the healer’s stone, it offers energetic protection from outside negative energies, imparts the ability to face unpleasant conditions, encourages positive thoughts, and releases emotional turmoil by helping one to recognize struggles as being neccessary for one's growth. Sugilite Care: Sugilite is a fairly durable mineral stone however certain chemicals such as those found in some cleaning supplies can "etch" the surface of the stone leaving it looking dull. Your jewelry can be maintained with a non abrasive jewelry cleaner, one that is rated for pearls, which will not damage your Sugilite. We recommend purchasing a jewelry polishing cloth, they are quite inexpensive and will last a very long time. You can then buff each piece before you store it, this will remove any dirt and oils from your body, both of which will speed up the tarnishing process. Avoid exposing your Sugilite jewelry to household detergents, especially bleach which can discolor the stone and the setting. Perfumes, cosmetics and hairspray can also damage jewelry as can chlorine in a swimming pool or hot tub. Store Sugilite carefully, preferably in a separate jewelry compartment, a chamois bag or in tissue. Amethyst Care: Cleaning your fine Amethyst jewelry is one way of keeping it bright and shinning, as it was on the day you first purchased it. Amethyst is fairly durable but still needs proper care. Clean your Amethyst jewelry in a gentle dishwashing liquid and a soft brush, rinse in warm water and dry off with a soft cloth. Remove your Amethyst jewelry while exercising or playing sports. Your gemstone can be chipped or be jarred loose. Avoid wearing jewelry during housework. Contact with household chemicals, especially ammonia-based, may discolor or damage your jewelry. Never store your jewelry in piles or together. This is to avoid scratching the Amethyst in your jewelry as well as the metal mounting. Harder gemstones, such as diamonds, can scratch Amethyst. Store your precious Amethyst jewelry in separate sections of the jewelry box or wrap them separately in soft cloths. Store your jewelry in a cool place out of direct sunlight. Do not wear your jewelry in swimming pools and on beaches. The chlorine in the pool and the seawater can harm and discolor the Amethyst in your jewelry. Do not soak your jewelry for extended periods in soap or other such solutions. It may harm the polish of your gemstone. Never ever use chlorine bleach to clean Amethyst jewelry. Never use toothpaste to clean your Amethyst jewelry. The abrasives in your toothpaste could mar the shine on Amethyst and the mounted metal. There is no reason to believe that with care you may not be able to enjoy your Amethyst jewelry lifelong. Jewelry Handling: It is Not Recommended to Use Harsh Cleaners, Detergents, Soaps, Shampoos, Jewelry Cloths or Jewelry Liquids, Chemicals, Chlorine, Body or Tanning Lotions, Ultrasonic Cleaners, Tarnish Creams, Showering, Swimming in Pools or Hot Tubs or the Ocean With Natural Sea Shell and Gemstone Adorned Silver Jewelry. About Tahitian Gold-Lip Oyster (Pinctada Maxima): Sometimes called White or Silver Lipped Oyster, Pinctada is a genus of pearl oysters. These are saltwater clams, marine bivalve mollusks of the genus Pinctada in the family Pteriidae. They have a strong inner shell layer composed of nacre, also known as mother of pearl. All species within the genus Pinctada share the physiological properties that can lead to the production of large pearls of commercial value, and therefore attempts have been made to harvest pearls commercially from many different Pinctada species. This is the largest oyster species that grows up to 8-12” in diameter. It occurs naturally only in the warm tropical South Pacific waters of the Arafura Sea (off Northern Australia), Eastern and Northern Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Northern Thailand and to the east to Fiji and Tahiti. Pinctada Maxima can be broadly divided into two types based on the color of the shell’s inside, the silver-lipped and the gold-lipped. They are the source of larger White South Sea pearls more than 10mm in diameter, with some as large as 16-17mm with a weight of 7 grams. Australia and Indonesia are the main pearl producers, accounting for over 90% of production between them. The Gold Lip Oyster's “mother of pearl” inner shell has beautiful iridescent qualities. The Mother of Pearl shell is surface polished to display a beautiful shine along with its natural rainbow colored hues and iridescence. Gorgeous and radiant in appearance! Mother of Pearl Care: Use mild soaps and water on mother of pearl to clean it, and avoid storing it with jewelry which may scratch it and wear away the luminous layers of nacre.
