They are usually gray and craggy and covered with little craters that look like out-of-control warts. Of all the creatures in the ocean, a mollusk seems unlikely to be the one that would normally inspire art...until its shell is opened. Opening a mollusk can be like prying open a treasure box long hidden in the depths of the ocean. Iridescent colors explode from the shell, from pale gray-blues and soft golden tones to brilliant pinks, purples and greens. Now these gifts from the sea are being used to create one-of-a-kind wearable art by one of Hawai`i's jewelry designers Marta Howell of Kailua, on the Island of Oahu, Hawai`i." She begins with Mother-of-pearl, sometimes combining it with Corals and Semi-precious Stones such as Tourmaline, Peridot, Amethyst, Blue Topaz, Citrine and Garnet, as the muses move Her. David, her husband taught her silversmithing, and she uses silver to bind the pieces together. The effect is often of a silver frame around the shells and stones. Marta stated, "I see art in every piece of shell. It's a never-ending adventure. Taking layers from the shells was like finding a new world within the shell." Howell said the temperature of the ocean, age of the mollusk and algae and seaweed they eat help determine the colors the shells take on. Those from Sumatra have a golden hue; from Norway, blue-pink; and New Zealand's are green-blue. Howell said one of the properties she likes best about working with mother-of-pearl is that there is a shade that works with every skin color. When she is designing, she has six muses in mind, each is based on a woman she has known in real life. They range from a graceful, feminine Hawaiian woman to a businesswoman "with attitude."About Druzy Quartz:The term "Druzy" refers to a large number of thin, tiny quartz crystals which is formed within the inside of another host stone. One good example of druzy is the crystals filled inside the cavity of a geode. Most druzy quartz occurs inside of chalcedony geodes which formed as nodules within ancient volcanic rocks or lava. Cavities within the rock where slowly filled by silicate and zeolitic minerals, which were deposited in layers upon the walls of the cavity. When the deposition process does not proceed to the point where the cavity is completely full, a hollow space remains, causing a geode. When the ground water that carries dissolved silica is forced to get filled into a porous area of rock, rapid cooling occurs and it causes the formation of minute crystals. As in Druzy Chrysocolla, the rock is composed of agatized chrysocolla with crusts of small sparkling quartz crystals in tiny cavities. Occasionally, when amethyst, chalcedony, garnet, or similar mineral crystals grow they can form a tightly-packed matrix which creates a dense bed of individual crystals, each with only a single termination pyramid exposed. When this bed of crystals has a very fine crystalline structure similar to sugar or salt crystals, it is known as "druzes," "druzy," "drusies," or "druzi," which is described as having an "encrustation" crystal habit. This aggregate of minute crystals coating a surface is also referred to as "druzy encrustation." In its natural state, druzy quartz is clear, white, tan, golden (citrine), and light purple (amethyst), but there is a wide variety of dramatic colors found in jewelry-grade druzy, which is mostly the result of artificial heat, irradiation treatments, or using precious metal vapor coatings. Vapor-coating (aka vapor-deposition) is one of the more common gemstone enhancements used to achieve the scintillation and myriad of colors and that are found in druzy quartz jewelry. This is a similar process to the application of thin films and metallic coatings onto silicon wafers, used in electronics. In a vacuum chamber, vaporized titanium metal is mixed with oxygen and deposited onto the crystal, bonding to the surface at a molecular level. Titanium is used to create intense hues of blue, green, and purple, as well as adding an iridescent (schiller effect) quality and/or play-of-color. Druzy crystal is typically cut into flat planes (calibrated druzy) to be placed into a bezel jewelry setting.Druzy Care:Clean by swirling through soapy water, rinse in distilled or filtered water, and blow-dry. The vapor-coating on druzy crystals will be fine as long as it is not abraded.Jewelry Handling:It is Not Recommended to Use Harsh Cleaners, Detergents, Soaps, Shampoos, Jewelry Cloths or Jewelry Liquids, Chemicals, Chlorine, Body or Tanning Lotions, Ultrasonic Cleaners, Tarnish Creams, Showering, Swimming in Pools or Hot Tubs or the Ocean With Druzy Quartz Jewelry. Topaz Care and Cleaning Tips:Do not use an ultrasonic cleaner on your garnet jewelry. Put your jewelry on last and take it off first. Always complete your makeup before putting on your jewelry so that the chemicals in hairspray and makeup won't damage it and you will have to clean it less often. Remove your jewelry before doing any housework or yard work to prevent the possibility of breaking a clasp or the gemstone itself. Topaz, like diamond, has perfect basal cleavage; a sharp blow from the right direction will split it perfectly along its cleavage line. Avoid exposing your topaz to harsh chemicals, particularly acids. Keep topaz out of direct sunlight and extreme temperatures because the sun and heat can potentially alter its color. To keep your Topaz looking sparkly and bright, use warm water and add mild dishwashing liquid to the water, clean the stones with a soft cloth or toothbrush. Rinse the jewelry with warm water and pat it dry. To Store your Topaz Jewelry, Wrap each piece in its own cloth to keep it from touching other pieces. Place each piece in its own compartment in your jewelry box, separate from other gemstones because harder stones will scratch softer ones. Diamonds, corundum (rubies and sapphires) and alexandrite are harder than topaz, while aquamarines, emeralds and garnets are softer. Store your jewelry in a cool place out of direct sunlight!
