- Additional Details: Although Hawaiian Gold coral can be 100% completely natural (unenhanced, untreated) in color, Black coral is sometimes placed in a strong oxidizer to bleach and modify its color appearance from a solid midnight black into an iridescent, brownish-tan or golden beryl color to produce a golden-colored coral. The coral pieces are 100% genuine black coral, which have been modified only in color appearance to produce a glowing brown tone, similar to taking a cultured freshwater white pearl and modifying it into a chocolate pearl. This modification does not necessarily degrade the value of the original black coral having been changed, but is an accepted enhancement process and often times more preferred as a brownish-golden earth tone. With earth tones always in vogue, black keeps brown sharp and urban. Brown warms up black, making it more flattering on skin. Designs that pair black and brown help marry all the jewelry in a fashionable woman's wardrobe. And like a black and brown handbag, black and brown pieces will work with both sides of a woman's closet allowing one to color coordinate with nearly an unlimited choice of fashion wear. On the other hand, some jewelry consumers prefer to accessorize their dress wear using only natural and untreated jewelry pieces, which is also understood. In gemology, chatoyancy (or chatoyance) is an optical reflectance effect seen in certain gemstones. Coined from the French "chat oeil," meaning "cat's eye," chatoyancy arises either from the fibrous structure of a material, as in tiger eye quartz, or from fibrous inclusions or cavities within the stone. The effect can be likened to the sheen off a spool of silk; the mobile, wavering reflection always being perpendicular to the direction of the fibers. When black coral undergoes bleaching modifications, the internal branching structures and inclusions within the coral piece produces this glowing chatoyance "cat's eye" effect on the surface. The floating appearance displayed on every modified black coral piece is quite appealing and gorgeous to look at.

About Coral: Coral is the skeletal remains of a marine animal, the polyp corallicum, and is mainly composed of calcium carbonate. Since Corals are calcified skeletons of sea creatures, they grow in formations resembling branches of a tree. Located at depths between 10-1600 feet, coral can be found along the shores of Japan, Hawai`i, Australia, throughout Polynesia, the western Mediterranean, China, Philippines, Taiwan, Bay of Biscay, Canary Islands, and the Malaysian Archipelago. Most coral used for jewelry comes from the Mediterranean Sea or from the Pacific Ocean near Hawai`i, Japan and Taiwan. Like many other gemstones made from rock or organic material, coral comes in a variety of many beautiful colors including blue, red, yellow, black, white, gold, orange, and pink. Unlike other precious stones, coral has a smooth brilliant surface when sanded and polished to take on a smooth glossy and shiny luster. White coral is the most plentiful of all coral varieties. The most sought after and rare corals are red, black, pink (aka angel skin), and gold. With characteristics such as its intense and permanent coloration and glossiness, precious coral jewelry remains very popular. Color is the main value factor of coral. Oxblood-red coral is the most expensive, followed by salmon, angel-skin, gold, black, and white being the most commonly available. Most experts also consider intensity and uniformity of color to be a major factor. There are several types of Hawaiian precious corals including black, pink, and gold. Hawaiian coral is also considered one of the world’s finest by displaying more lustrous qualities than any other types of corals found in the world.Black Coral: In Hawaiian, black coral is called `Ekaha ku moana, which was proclaimed the official Hawaii State gemstone in 1987. It takes many years for coral to mature and be ready to harvest and turn into fine jewelry. Black coral is considered a very valuable coral and one of the highest grade today is found in the seas of Hawaii. Black coral when highly polished is dazzling and holds great reflective properties. Black Coral was the first of the precious corals to be found in Hawaiian waters, growing at depths of 250 to 350 feet. Black coral grows in all oceans, ranging from just below the tide line to depths of thousands of feet. Most of the 150 known species live in tropical waters below about 300 feet. The few that thrive in shallower water, 60 feet or less, usually grow in caves and under ledges where light is dim. Black corals thrive in such darkness because they don't have symbiotic plants in their tissues, like reef corals do. Another difference between these two coral types is that black coral does not form reefs or heads. A colony of black coral looks like a tree growing up from the ocean floor. The largest of such trees in Hawaii reach about 6 feet tall, averaging 2 inches of growth per year. The trunks and branches of black coral (and some pink and gold species) are as hard as ivory and pearl.Black coral is rare and, when polished, it shines with such luster you can almost see your own reflection in it. Black corals are particularly common in the Indo-Pacific region and the Caribbean, where coral reefs have been the major source. Taiwan and the Philippines have tended to be the dominant exporters, but the Great Barrier Reef of eastern Australia is perhaps the best-known source. And, relatively large amounts are harvested off Hawaii, where black coral "appears to have first been found in 1958 off the island of Maui. Harvesting of Hawaiian precious coral is carefully controlled and monitored to ensure it remains a renewable resource. To ensure the future of black coral, divers strictly adheres to state regulations that prohibit the harvesting of immature colonies. Coral Care Tips: Corals are delicate gems and should be taken proper care of. To clean Coral jewelry, wipe it gently with a moist soft cloth, as Coral is much softer than other gem materials. Also, they should be stored carefully and separately from your other jewelry items to avoid scratches. Coral is also porous, similar to pearls, so care should be taken to see that coral jewelry does not come in contact with any chemicals. Because Coral is produced by a living organism it cannot be put into jewelry cleaning solutions. The best way to protect your coral jewelry is to rub mineral oil on about every 6 months to preserve their natural luster. Do not use an ultrasonic cleaner for coral jewelry. The above picture is a crushed, 8mm Golden (Modified Black) Coral Bead to show its genuine, internal structure and appearance. After a black coral bead undergoes a strong oxidizer processto bleach, the color appearance is modified and changes from black to a golden-brown color throughout. The outer smooth surface is then high polished to a lustrous shine and displays a chatoyance “cat’s eye” effect caused by the coral's internal pours reflecting more incidental surface light to produce a rolling iridescent glow. Upon a closer magnified examination, luminescent sparkles and striated coral branching lines are visible within the bead common to this variety of black coral. The chatoyance effect can be seen on the surface of one of the larger pieces.
