About Marta: Staff Writer, Honolulu Advertiser - "A mollusk is not a pretty thing. At least from the outside. They are usually gray and craggy and covered with little craters that look like out-of-control warts. Of all the creatures in the ocean, a mollusk seems unlikely to be the one that would normally inspire art...until its shell is opened. Opening a mollusk can be like prying open a treasure box long hidden in the depths of the ocean. Iridescent colors explode from the shell, from pale gray-blues and soft golden tones to brilliant pinks, purples and greens. Now these gifts from the sea are being used to create one-of-a-kind wearable art by one of Hawai`i's jewelry designers Marta Howell of Kailua, on the Island of Oahu, Hawai`i." She begins with Mother-of-pearl, sometimes combining it with Corals and Semi-precious Stones such as Tourmaline, Peridot, Amethyst, Blue Topaz, Citrine and Garnet, as the muses move Her. David, her husband taught her silversmithing, and she uses silver to bind the pieces together. The effect is often of a silver frame around the shells and stones. Marta stated, "I see art in every piece of shell. It's a never-ending adventure. Taking layers from the shells was like finding a new world within the shell." Howell said the temperature of the ocean, age of the mollusk and algae and seaweed they eat help determine the colors the shells take on. Those from Sumatra have a golden hue; from Norway, blue-pink; andNew Zealand's are green-blue. Howell said one of the properties she likes best about working with mother-of-pearl is that there is a shade that works with every skin color. When she is designing, she has six muses in mind, each is based on a woman she has known in real life. They range from a graceful, feminine Hawaiian woman to a businesswoman "with attitude." About Blister Pearls and Mabe Pearls: The Tahitian Pearl Oyster (Pinctada margaritifera) is a variety of Black-lip Oysters found in the South Pacific, in areas such as French Polynesia, Okinawa, and the Cook Islands. Known by Tahitians as Te Ufi, this particular species of oyster grows to about 12" in diameter and produces a wide range of dark-colored pearls commonly called "Tahitian pearls" or "Black Pearls." The natural colors of these pearls include from the darkest black to shimmering shades of silver/white, light gray, dark gray, orange, gold, green, blue, purple, bronze, and even pink. Luxury bestows its perfection to you in the form of these precious gems cultured only from the turquoise-colored, pristine lagoons of French Polynesia. Truly a "jewel of the sea" and living symbols of the purity found in a paradise that is greatly desired by women due to the mysterious aura surrounding them. The warm lagoons of many of the islands are among the most perfect on earth because of the temperature, density, salinity, light, and pure climate. It is only here that man and nature combine to create these rare pearls on earth. Similar to the Black-Lip Mabe Oyster (Pteria penguin), the Tahitian Oyster can also produce mabe and blister pearls. Both Blister and Mabe Pearls are quite different from what you might consider “normal” pearls. A mabe pearl is a hemispherical dome-shaped cultured pearl. Mabes occasionally appear in nature however, cultured mabes are grown intentionally, by using a hemispheric nucleus, rather than a round one; and by implanting it against the mantle of the oyster's shell, rather than within its tissue. The pearl then develops in a hemispheric form, with a flat back, as opposed to being relatively round. While in the oyster a mabe pearl is actually considered a blister pearl. After the blister pearl has developed with sufficient nacre, it is "worked" to become a mabe pearl. Blister pearls are "worked" by cutting the pearl off the shell with a circle-bit drill. The manually implanted nucleus is extracted, the inside of the nacre coating is color enhanced, and the void left by the nucleus is filled with an epoxy resin. Finally, the back of the pearl is finished by covering the bottom with a polished piece of mother-of-pearl to ultimately create a mabe pearl. These are industry-wide and publicly known standards used to manufacture mabe pearls. Cultured mabes are used for such things as rings and earrings, rather than for stringing on necklaces. They tend to be very beautiful with high luster and orient. Blister Pearls on the other hand, are completely left attached to the shell's mother of pearl mantle and is polished to a smooth surface. Blister pearls are often cut into lovely freeform shapes, showing both the oyster's inner surrounding shell and the pearl. Some refer to blister pearls as "mabe pearls", this is only accurate if the blister pearl was grown in a Mabe oyster and was removed to create the mabe. Mabe pearls are most frequently produced within saltwater oysters in the regions of Japan, Indonesia, and Australia. Blister and Mabe pearls come in a wide range of beautiful colors, which span from light pinks, to more bluish shades. Though they are quite lovely to look at, they will not be as expensive or valuable as “round” pearls due to having a flat side. Today, the production of cultured mabe pearls has become quite stable in all areas excluding Tahiti. The Tahitian government has set very tight and strict control regulations on cultured mabe pearl productions while focus is maintained producing cultured round pearls. These regulations allow approx. only 3%-5% out of the entire annual cultured pearl production to produce mabe pearls. High consumer demands and low production rates result in a much rarer and highly-valued pearl, making Tahitian mabe pearls the most desired of all mabe pearl types. Care Tips: Pearls are a soft gemstone with a low resistance to heat and chemicals. Keep pearls away from detergents, bleaches, chemical cleaners, chlorine, vinegar, ammonia, hairspray, perfume and cosmetics, or anything acidic; pearls are made of calcium carbonate and are porous and may absorb these liquids. These and other caustic substances and will eat holes into the pearl's nacre and irreversibly damage your pearls. Ultrasonic or steam cleaning will damage the delicate luster of pearls. Most jewelry cleaners have ammonia and should never be used on pearls. Instead, gently wipe pearls with a dry cotton cloth or chamois; or use a slightly damp white cotton cloth and lukewarm water. You may also gently buff with the outside untreated portions of a polishing cloth. Don't use toothbrushes, scouring pads or abrasive material to remove dirt as these can scratch the surface. Apply all cosmetics or perfumes at least 30 minutes before wearing. Put on your pearl after applying make-up, hair spray or perfume using the LOFO concept (Last On, First Off). Never soak your pearl in water. Take off pearls before showering, bathing, hot tubs, or swimming; the water may cause the drilled post settings to weaken and chlorine will damage the pearls. Keep pearls in a soft silk pouch, linen or soft cloth, and separate from other jewelry. This will protect them from scratches from hard jewelry items, such as metals and other gemstones. Pearls need some moisture, so do not store them in an airtight bag or sealed container for prolonged periods. Do not keep pearls near heaters or in areas that receive strong sunlight. Topaz Care and Cleaning Tips: Do not use an ultrasonic cleaner on your garnet jewelry. Put your jewelry on last and take it off first. Always complete your makeup before putting on your jewelry so that the chemicals in hairspray and makeup won't damage it and you will have to clean it less often. Remove your jewelry before doing any housework or yard work to prevent the possibility of breaking a clasp or the gemstone itself. Topaz, like diamond, has perfect basal cleavage; a sharp blow from the right direction will split it perfectly along its cleavage line. Avoid exposing your topaz to harsh chemicals, particularly acids. Keep topaz out of direct sunlight and extreme temperatures because the sun and heat can potentially alter its color. To keep your Topaz looking sparkly and bright, use warm water and add mild dishwashing liquid to the water, clean the stones with a soft cloth or toothbrush. Rinse the jewelry with warm water and pat it dry. To Store your Jewelry, Wrap each piece in its own cloth to keep it from touching other pieces. Place each piece in its own compartment in your jewelry box, separate from other gemstones because harder stones will scratch softer ones. Store your jewelry in a cool place out of direct sunlight. Jewelry Handling: It is Not Recommended to Use Harsh Cleaners, Detergents, Soaps, Shampoos, Jewelry Cloths or Jewelry Liquids, Chemicals, Chlorine, Body or Tanning Lotions, Ultrasonic Cleaners, Tarnish Creams, Showering, Swimming in Pools or Hot Tubs or the Ocean With Pearl and Gemstone Adorned Silver Jewelry.
