About Marta: Staff Writer, Honolulu Advertiser - "A mollusk is not a pretty thing. At least from the outside. They are usually gray and craggy and covered with little craters that look like out-of-control warts. Of all the creatures in the ocean, a mollusk seems unlikely to be the one that would normally inspire art...until its shell is opened. Opening a mollusk can be like prying open a treasure box long hidden in the depths of the ocean. Iridescent colors explode from the shell, from pale gray-blues and soft golden tones to brilliant pinks, purples and greens. Now these Gifts from the Sea™ are being used to create one-of-a-kind wearable art by one of Hawai`i's jewelry designers Marta Howell of Kailua, on the Island of Oahu, Hawai`i." She begins with Mother-of-pearl, sometimes combining it with Corals and Semi-precious Stones such as Tourmaline, Peridot, Amethyst, Blue Topaz, Citrine and Garnet, as the muses move Her. David, her husband taught her silversmithing, and she uses silver to bind the pieces together. The effect is often of a silver frame around the shells and stones. Marta stated, "I see art in every piece of shell. It's a never-ending adventure. Taking layers from the shells was like finding a new world within the shell." Howell said the temperature of the ocean, age of the mollusk and algae and seaweed they eat help determine the colors the shells take on. Those from Sumatra have a golden hue; from Norway, blue-pink; and New Zealand's are green-blue. Howell said one of the properties she likes best about working with mother-of-pearl is that there is a shade that works with every skin color. When she is designing, she has six muses in mind, each is based on a woman she has known in real life. They range from a graceful, feminine Hawaiian woman to a businesswoman "with attitude." About Ammolite: Ammolite is a gemstone formed from fossil ammonite shells. Ammonites are an extinct group of marine invertebrate animals in the subclass Ammonoidea of the class Cephalopoda. These molluscs are more closely related to living coleoids (i.e. octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish) than they are to shelled nautiloids such as the living Nautilus species. Ammonites are excellent index fossils, and it is often possible to link the rock layer in which they are found to specific geological time periods. Their fossil shells usually take the form of planispirals, although there were some helically-spiraled and non-spiraled forms (known as heteromorphs). The name ammonite, from which the scientific term is derived, was inspired by the spiral shape of their fossilized shells, which somewhat resemble tightly-coiled rams' horns. Pliny the Elder (d. 79 AD. near Pompeii) called fossils of these animals ammonis cornua ("Horns of Ammon") because the Egyptian god Ammon (Amun) was typically depicted wearing ram's horns. Often the name of an ammonite genus ends in -ceras, which is Greek for "horn". Originating from within the bactritoid nautiloids, the ammonoid cephalopods first appeared in the Devonian (circa 400 million years ago) and became extinct at the close of the Cretaceous (65.5 Ma) along with the dinosaurs. The classification of ammonoids is based in part on the ornamentation and structure of the septa comprising their shells' gas chambers; by these and other characteristics we can divide subclass Ammonoidea into three orders and eight known suborders. While nearly all nautiloids show gently curving sutures, the ammonoid suture line (the intersection of the septum with the outer shell) was folded, forming saddles (or peaks) and lobes (or valleys). Because ammonites and their close relatives are extinct, little is known about their way of life. Their soft body parts are very rarely preserved in any detail. Nonetheless, much has been worked out by examining ammonoid shells and by using models of these shells in water tanks. Many ammonoids probably lived in the open water of ancient seas, rather than at the sea bottom. This is suggested by the fact that their fossils are often found in rocks that were laid down under conditions where no bottom-dwelling life is found. When ammonites are found in clays their original mother-of-pearl coating is often preserved. The Cretaceous Pierre Shale formation of the United States and Canada is well known for the abundant ammonite fauna it yields. Many of these also have much or all of the original shell, as well as the complete body chamber, still intact. Many Pierre Shale ammonites, and indeed many ammonites throughout earth history, are found inside concretions. The majority of ammonoid specimens, especially those of the Paleozoic era, are preserved only as internal molds; that it to say, the outer shell (composed of aragonite) has been lost during the fossilization process. It is only in these internal-mold specimens that the suture lines can be observed; in life the sutures would have been hidden by the outer shell. About Royston Nevada Mines: Royston has been one of the most productive turquoise districts in all of Nevada, and turquoise was mined here on a small scale by local Indian peoples for many years. The Royal Blue, the largest property, was discovered by local prospectors in 1909. The Bunker Hill mine is small by comparison to other major mines in the Royston area. It was first discovered in 1927. The Bunker Hill mine is a little more than 1/3rd mile north of the Royal Blue Mine, the most productive mine in the Royston area. The mine is located at the edge of a broad valley that spreads out to the west. There are a number of other turquoise mines and prospects located both to the north and south. The Royston town area has not been occupied for many decades. The Royston District is covered by a number of mining claims and is currently being explored for gold deposits, which are found near turquoise deposits in many places in Nevada. The turquoise bearing zones follow small faults and fractures in the rock, which is heavily altered from a white to light brown color. The host rock seems to have originally been a fine grained volcanic porphyry. The turquoise forms in small cracks in the rock. Along the exposed wall of an open pit, a small veinlet of deep blue-green turquoise fills what was once a narrow crack. This is why most turquoise is so thin however, the Royston area does also produce some much thicker material up to 1/4" thick. The Royston mines produce good, hard turquoise ranging from a light blue to deep royal blue color. A large percentage of the turquoise that comes from these properties is hard enough to be classified as gem quality material. The roughs are sawed up and cut into cabochons (smooth polished stones) typical for turquoise. Both blue and green colored turquoise are commonly found at Royston, including some stones in which both colors appear (a typical characteristic for a good percentage of Royston turquoise). The mines also produce some nice spiderweb matrix material as well. All of these gems are hard and solid and feature a good deep polish. The Royston area in general is considered by many as one of the "classic" western turquoise locations, and Royston Turquoise has been featured in a number of publications. Grading Turquoise Value: Hardness and richness of color are two of the major factors in determining the value of turquoise; while color is a matter of individual taste, generally speaking, the most desirable is a strong sky to "robin's egg" blue (in reference to the eggs of the American Robin). Whatever the color, turquoise should not be excessively soft or chalky. The mother rock or matrix in which turquoise is found can often be seen as splotches or a network of brown or black veins running through the stone in a netted pattern; this veining may add value to the stone if the result is complementary, but such a result is uncommon. Such material is sometimes described as "spiderweb matrix"; it is most valued in the Southwest United States and Far East, but is not as highly appreciated near Globe, Arizona where unblemished and vein-free material is ideal. Uniformity of color is desired, and in finished pieces the quality of workmanship is also a factor; this includes the quality of the polish and the symmetry of the stone. Calibrated stones, that is, stones adhering to standard jewelry setting measurements, may also be more sought after. Like coral and other opaque gems, turquoise is commonly sold at a price according to its physical size in millimetres rather than weight. Turquoise is sometimes treated with a light waxing or oiling applied to improve its color and luster; however, if the material is of high quality, to begin with, very little of the wax or oil is absorbed and the turquoise therefore does not "rely" on this impermanent treatment for its beauty. All other factors being equal, untreated turquoise will always command a higher price. Bonded and "reconstituted" material is worth considerably less. Turquoise Care: Being a phosphate mineral, turquoise is inherently fragile and sensitive to solvents; perfume and other cosmetics will attack the finish and may alter the color of turquoise gems, as will certain skin oils, and most all commercial jewelry cleaning fluids. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may also discolor or dehydrate turquoise. Care should therefore be taken when wearing such jewels: cosmetics, including sunscreen and hair spray, should be applied before putting on turquoise jewelry, and they should not be worn to a beach or other sun-bathed environment. After use, turquoise should be gently cleaned with a soft cloth to avoid a build up of residue, and should be stored in its own container to avoid scratching by harder gems. Turquoise can also be adversely affected if stored in an airtight container. Jewelry Handling: It is Not Recommended to Use Harsh Cleaners, Detergents, Soaps, Shampoos, Jewelry Cloths or Jewelry Liquids, Chemicals, Chlorine, Body or Tanning Lotions, Ultrasonic Cleaners, Tarnish Creams, Showering, Swimming in Pools or Hot Tubs or the Ocean With Natural Sea Shell and Gemstone Silver Jewelry.
