- Symbolism: Time taken or required to obtain completion, understanding, and satisfaction. The Color of Green Gemstones represents money, prosperity, employment, fertility, healing, and growth. It is the color of the element of the earth and symbolic of the planet's fertility and life. Green is soothing, refreshing and calming. Pale and medium greens connect with nature. Green denotes the season of spring, youth and vigor. Carving Pattern All the designs that appear on Chinese textiles, paintings, sculptures, ceramics, jewelry, furniture, snuff bottles, and the myriad of many other aesthetic and folk arts that dominate Chinese culture, have a meaning. Most of these meanings are easily understood, consisting of flowers, plants, animals, geometric patterns, landscapes, and other eye-pleasing arrangements. They are decorative devices chosen for their attractiveness or beauty in the eyes of the artist. Artists also employ scenes and symbols from a culture's past that can either be religious, such as depictions of the stars or the moon, or profane, such as scenes from a famous play or folk tale. Such inspiration is common to most cultures. Chinese art, however, employs additional forms of artistic devices; decorative motifs that still communicate very special messages in the eyes of the artisan and the eventual owner. Chinese art contains a whole code of these symbols. Some are based on the similarities of an object's attributes to another object (a metaphor), while others are a play on a word's pronunciation (a pun or rebus). All, however, constitute a visual language or means of expressing a thought or sentiment where the design's symbolic meaning takes precedence over the item being decorated. In Chinese language, the plus sign, equates to the Chinese calligraphy character of shi (+). Shi translates into the number Ten (10) and there are Nine (9) shi characters on this carved jade design. If we consider each of these initial numbers as a pathway into ever increasing complexity and higher knowledge, the nine will be our precipice of our understanding. At the apex of our upward count stands the nine, and in Chinese meaning of numbers it is the jackpot of celestial forces. Interestingly, in Feng Shui, nine sections are cordoned off by agricultural land owners; eight sections of land are cultivated, but the ninth section (in the center of the agricultural blueprint) is classified as the "spiritual or heavenly acre" and is devoted to honor the supreme and sacred. The Chinese meaning of number nine is completion and satisfaction. It represents a high standard of celestial equivalence. When we reach the philosophical height of number nine we have ascended towards an esoteric understanding and have obtained an immense satisfaction. In Chinese astrology, shi or the number 10 represents the 10 Heavenly Stems, and refer to a cyclic number system that is used for time reckoning. The ten Celestial or Heavenly Stems (tiangan) are a Chinese system of ordinals that first appear during the Shang dynasty, ca. 1250 BC, as the names of the ten days of the week. The Shang people believed that there were ten suns, each of which appeared in order in a ten-day cycle (xun). The Heavenly Stems (tiangan) were the names of the ten suns, which may have designated world ages. They were found in the given names of the kings of the Shang in their Temple Names. These consisted of a relational term (Father, Mother, Grandmother, etc.) to which was added one of the ten gan names (e.g. Grandfather Jia). Some historians think the ruling class of the Shang had ten clans, but it is not clear whether their society reflected the myth or vice versa. The Heavenly Stems were used in combination with the Earthly Branches, a similar cycle of twelve days, to produce a compound cycle of 60-days. The Earthly Branches are today used with the Heavenly Stems in the current version of the "traditional calendar" and in Taoism. The Ganzhi (Stem-Branch) combination is a fairly new way to mark time. The Branches are as old as the Stems, but the Stems were tied to the ritual calendars of Chinese kings and were not a part of the calendar system of the majority of Chinese. Subsequently, after the collapse of the Shang Dynasty, the Heavenly Stems lost their original function, but had many other uses, the most prominent and long lasting of which was their use together with the Earthly Branches.
