About Queen Emma: Known as Emma Kalanikaumakaamano Kaleleonalani Naea Rooke, Queen Consort of Hawaii (January 2, 1836 – April 25, 1885). Queen Emma was the wife of Kamehameha IV and one of the most influential figures in Hawaiian history. Once a candidate for the royal throne, Emma became known and loved for her humanitarian efforts throughout the Islands. Emma was born on January 2, 1836. She was the great-granddaughter of Keliimaikai, a half-brother of Kamehameha the Great, and her parents were themselves high-ranking alii (members of royalty). In accordance with Hawaiian custom, Emma was adopted at birth by her childless aunt, chiefess Grace Kamaukui Young, and her husband, Doctor Thomas C.C. Rooke. Emma was educated in Honolulu at the Royal School, which was established by American missionaries. In 1856, she married Alexander `Iolani Liholiho Keawenui, who a year earlier had assumed the throne as Kamehameha IV. Two years later, in 1858, Emma gave birth to a son, Albert Edward Kauikeaouli Leiopapa a Kamehameha. The queen kept herself busy tending to royal palace affairs, including the expansion of the scholarly library. Inspired by watching her father’s work, Emma encouraged her husband to help establish a public hospital. As a result, Queen’s Hospital opened in 1860. The queen formed an organization to promote the hospital’s services to native Hawaiians. She would visit patients there almost daily whenever she was in residence in Honolulu. Tragically, Prince Albert died in August 1862 of "brain fever." He was only four years old. Just 15 months later, the young king, weakened by chronic asthma and a broken heart, died at age 29. Queen Emma gained the name "Kaleleonalani" after the death of her young son and husband, in remembrance of the "flight of the heavenly ones", as described in her name. In the brief period after her son's death and before her husband's death, she was referred to as "Kaleleokalani", or "flight of the heavenly one". Queen Emma was also nicknamed "Wahine Hololio" in deference to her renowned horsemanship. To ease her pain, Emma dedicated herself to many worthy causes, among which was organizing a hospital auxiliary of women to help with the ill. She also helped found two schools, St. Andrews Priory (1867) in Honolulu and St. Cross on Maui. Her work included the development of St. Andrews Cathedral. She journeyed to England where she and her friend, Queen Victoria, raised $30,000 for the construction of the cathedral. England’s Queen Victoria remarked of Emma, "Nothing could be nicer or more dignified than her manner." Emma and her husband King Kamehameha IV are considered saints and are honored with a feast day on the liturgical calendar of the Episcopal Church in the United States of America. Their feast day is celebrated annually on November 28. Alexander was succeeded by his brother, who took the name Kamehameha V, then again by King Lunalilo. When King Lunalilo died in 1874, Emma became a candidate for the throne (the Kingdom had become a constitutional democracy). Lunalilo had wanted her to succeed him, but he failed to make the legal pronouncement before he died. Had he done so, she would have reigned as sovereign queen. Instead, an election for a new sovereign was held. Although she campaigned actively, she lost the throne to David Kalākaua. After the death of her husband and son, she remained a widow for the rest of her life. Known affectionately as the "Old Queen", King Kalākaua always left a seat for her at any royal occasion, even though she would usually never attend. Politics was not her strong suit, humanitarianism was. Queen Emma was much loved by the people and hundreds of mele have been composed in her honor. Her humanitarian efforts set an example for Hawaii's royal legacy of charitable bequests. After her death on April 25, 1885 at age 49, she was given a royal funeral and laid to rest in Mauna `Ala beside her husband and son. Emma Kaleleonalani left the bulk of her estate, some 13,000 acres of land on the Big Island and in Waikiki on Oahu, in trust for the hospital that honors her. "She was different from any of her contemporaries. Emma is Emma is Emma. There’s no one like her. A devout Christian who chose to be baptized in the Anglican church in adulthood, and a typically Victorian woman who wore widow’s weeds, gardene, drank tea, patronized charities and gave dinner parties, she yet remained quintessentially Hawaiian. She wrote exquisite chants of lament in Hawaiian, craved Hawaiian food when she was away from it, loved to fish, hike, ride and camp out (activities she kept up to the end of her life) and, throughout her life, took very seriously her role as a protector of the people’s welfare. In a way, she was a harbinger of things to come in terms of Hawaii’s multi-ethnic, multi-cultural society. You have to be impressed with her eclecticism - spiritually, emotionally and physically."
