Within this large genus of 200–220 species, 7 are regarded as native Hawaiian hibiscus. Later, other varieties were imported and growers began to develop unique hybrids to produce the kaleidoscope of colors and sizes found in Hawai`i today. These flowering plants are native to warm, temperate, subtropical and tropical regions throughout the world. About 33 additional varieties have been introduced to Hawai`i from other pacific and Asian countries. The genus includes both annual and perennial herbaceous plants, and woody shrubs and small trees. Hawaiian hibiscus flowers are full, conspicuously large, trumpet-shaped tropical flowers with toothed-edge leaves 4-6" in diameter. Each leaf commonly has 5 lobes, but range between 3-7. The flowers grow on a hibiscus shrub, which itself grows to a height of 3-15 feet tall with a diameter of 8-15 feet wide. Young Hawaiian hibiscus plants have smooth tan trunks; the trunks of older plants have a wrinkled appearance. Common Hawaiian hibiscus flowers are yellow, generally with a maroon center, and form singly or in small clusters at the ends of the branches, however, flowers also come in a variety of beautiful colors including pink, white, orange and red. The color of Hibiscus grows darker as it ages. The staminal column of the Hawaiian hibiscus flowers are yellow, and the flowers open between 2-4pm and close between 9am-1pm. Hibiscus flowers are extremely common and found on all the main Hawaiian islands except Ni`ihau and Kaho`olawe, but the flowers are not common in any location. Hawaiian hibiscus bloom from spring through early summer with occasional flowers during the rest of the year. There are many different shapes, sizes, colors, and species of this flower. Wherever you go in the islands, not only will you see hibiscus plants on roadsides and residential neighborhoods, but you also will find the image of Hawaiian hibiscus proudly displayed on storefronts, logos, t-shirts and on various Hawaiian jewelry and tropical decor. The yellow hibiscus originated in Asia and the Pacific islands. Hawaiians originally adopted the hibiscus flower (of all colors) as their official Territorial flower in the early 1920s. It wasn’t until June 6, 1988, however, that Hawai`i’s legislature legally adopted Ma`o hau hele, the name of the shrub bearing the striking and beautiful yellow hibiscus (hibiscus brackenridgei), known as pua aloalo, as the official state flower. Hawai`i’s official flowers are as diverse and beautiful as the islands they represent. In addition to the yellow hibiscus, each Hawaiian island has its own designated official flower. There are several valuable uses for Hawaiian hibiscus plants. The main use of the flower is beautiful as a table decoration displayed in Hawaiian homes and hotels and at traditional Hawaiian weddings and luaus. However, many Hawaiian women and female visitors to Hawai`i, wear hibiscus flowers in their hair as tropical fashion. Other women tuck a hibiscus flower behind their ear, signifying their relationship status and availability. Which ear is used indicates the wearer's status; on the left ear, meaning taken or spoken for and on the right ear, meaning available or looking for a mate. The bark of the hibiscus contains strong fibers. They can be obtained by letting the stripped bark sit in the sea in order to let the organic material rot away. In Polynesia, these fibers (called fau, pūrau) are used for making grass skirts worn by hula dancers at festive Hawaiian occasions. Several Hibiscus flowers are also a primary ingredient in many herbal teas. A USDA study showed consuming hibiscus tea lowered blood pressure in a group of pre to mildly hypertensive adults, although more research is required. Hibiscus flowers are among the prettiest, most interesting and easy-to-identify of all the earth's blossoms.
