Important Support Notes: Black Amber...really? Yes, really...well, kind of really. As most knowledgeable individuals can research the internet, they will find there is no such occurrence of true and genuine "black-colored" amber. Some might refer to "black amber" as being "jet", an organic mineraloid variety of lignite coal. Jet is a product of high pressure decomposition of "wood" resulting from carbon compression and salt water occurring over millions of years, which might be sold off and termed as being "black amber". However, jet contains no succinate acid (genuine amber) whatsoever, so it should not be sold as or be labeled as being "amber" of any type. Jet has also been called "black amber" since its qualities may induce an electrical charge, similar to genuine amber when rubbed. Regardless, there is a more appropriately named "black amber" called Rumanite, a brownish-yellow amber from Romania, which contains a considerable amount of sulfur. Rumanite is a variety of "black amber", but actually appears more as a deep red, blue, or brown when held to a light source. Finally, there is Baltic "Black Amber" as in this item being offered. Baltic "Black Amber" is actually normal appearing genuine amber (likely honey or cognac in color), which has mixed-in or was covered with prehistoric volcanic ash when it dropped down the tree onto the ground. Upon closer observations of the item's pictures, you can see portions of normal amber exposed on some of the beads and others completely covered, but when held up to a light source, the amber's true inner glow appears. Baltic "Black Amber" designs are typically available with two types of surface textures; polished and sand-matte. The polished designs have been surface buffed to display a more smooth and glossy black color appearance. The sand-matted designs have been surface scored with abrasives to display a more matted, grayish-black color appearance. However, through continuous wear, the matted designs will naturally absorb your skin oils and over a prolonged period of time will become smoother and naturally polished, and eventually will turn its grayish-black color to the more solid, glossy black color. Please trust this very rare item is natural, Baltic "Black Amber", which has not been colored, treated, or dusted off recently with Mount St. Helen's ash or rolled around in dirt...but genuine, prehistoric amber mixed in with prehistoric volcanic ash. Next to Dominican "Blue" amber being the rarest of all amber colors, Baltic "Black Amber" places second amongst the color list due to its limited regional distribution areas of volcanic ash deposits surrounding the Baltic States. As such, the price value of Baltic "Black Amber" is somewhat higher as compared to other commonly known color varieties of amber. The historical details of how Baltic "Black Amber" is formed intrigued me enough to make this design line available. Currently, Baltic "Black Amber" designs are very popular in Germany and in very high demand throughout Europe; it is somewhat less known in the U.S., Canada, and other countries and the primary reason for my making it availability to my potential customers. As always, please feel free to ask any questions regarding this rarer type of amber.

- Symbolism: The Color of Black Gemstones symbolize self control and resilience. Black stones have protective energies in the sense that black is the absence of light, and therefore, can be used to create invisibility. Black is one of the most misunderstood colors. A black tie dinner is formal and elegant. Women can wear that "little black dress" to the black tie dinner. Yet the bad guys wear black hats. Yet, Native Americans thought black was good because it was the color of soil, which gives life. Black is not necessarily a color; it is the absence of all color. When people speak of opposites, it is usually in terms of black and white. Black, and its opposite white, represents polarities similar to the yin-yang philosophy, both polar opposites must exist to have complete balance. Black absorbs all aspects of light. While white reveals, black conceals. It has come to mean hidden, it is linked to the unknown or the unseen. In times of uncertainty black contains the energy of the threatening unknown. In a positive state, black is seen as a restful emptiness into which anything may emerge and disappear once again. It is also mysterious, providing a sense of potential and possibility. Amber assists the body in letting go of the past and creating anew; Brings forth a carefree, sunny disposition. Promotes good luck, success, and dissolves oppositions. Activates a desire to serve humanity, stimulates the intellect.

About Amber and Baltic Amber: Amber is the preserved resin of prehistoric trees that grew tens of millions of years ago. Often classified as a semi-precious stone, this hardened organic substance has over 200 descriptive names, over 65 shades of colors, a variety of transparencies, and no one piece is ever alike. Despite such a large range, the most common specimen is a golden-brown and semi-opaque object that will infrequently contain inclusions. Inclusions in amber are classified as anything embalmed (preserved) in the hardened resin. Amber, which is a fossil itself, is often held in the same class as semi-precious stones as turquoise and jade because of its ornamental uses however, amber is not mineralized. Most amber existing today is approx. 30-90 million years old. Amber has a deep fascination for people both as a gem and as a chance to look back into the past with remarkable clarity. Its warm lustrous touch beguiles us and the remarkable inclusions sometimes found within captures our imagination. Amber (resinite) is the common name for fossilized tree resin from ancient forests, which has been appreciated for its inherent and interesting mixture of colors and natural beauty since Neolithic times. Amber is not produced from tree sap, but rather from plant resin. Sap, is fluid circulating through a plant's vascular system, while resin is the semi-solid amorphous organic substance secreted in pockets and canals through epithelial cells of the plant as a protection mechanism. This aromatic resin can drip from and ooze down trees, as well as filling internal fissures, trapping debris such as seeds, leaves, feathers, and insects. The resin becomes buried and fossilized via a natural polymerization of the original organic compounds. Volatile terpenes in resin evaporate and dissipate under natural forest conditions, leaving nonvolatile terpenoid fractions to become fossilized if they are stable enough to withstand degradation and depositional conditions. The fossil resin becomes incorporated into sediments and soils, which over millions of years change into rock such as shale and sandstone. Having taken tens of millions of years to process, polymerization is all but complete and all of the potentially damaging volatile oils have dissipated to eventually produce fossilized amber. Copal is resin that has matured only to the point of hardening, but despite similar appearances to amber, it has only undergone partial polymerization and still contains volatile terpene oils. Copal should never be used in conjunction with the word Amber; Copal is NOT true Amber, but an immature resin! Although a specific time interval has not been established for resin to become amber, the majority of amber is found within Cretaceous and Tertiary sedimentary rocks (30-100 million years old). The presence of insects in amber was noticed by Pliny the Elder (23-79AD) and led him to the correct theory that at some point, amber was in a soft liquid state to cover bodies of insects. Hence, he gave it the expressive name of succinum (gum-stone), a name still in use today to describe succinic acid as well as Succinite, the term for Baltic Amber. Tibetans had perhaps the most beautiful name for amber; po-she, which meant perfumed crystal. Baltic amber contains 3%-8% Succinic acid, which distinguishes it from all other types of amber. Succinite's hardness is between 2.0-2.7, which is greater than many other fossil resins and a specific gravity varying from 1.05 to 1.10. It can’t be affected by alcohol, is not very hard (hard as a fingernail), it will rather turn black and burn than melt, it is warm to touch and produces static electricity if rubbed, and its luster is resinous and appears transparent to translucent to opaque. Commonly, cloudy and opaque amber is known as "bony” amber, owed to its millions of minute bubbles inside. There is no one tree responsible for producing Baltic amber, studies show it's closely related to broad-leafed conifers of the Araucaria, in the family Araucariaceae. Amber is found all over the world however, the largest deposits are from the Baltic Sea region and the Dominican Republic, being the second largest producer. Industry professionals agree the best specimens used for gem quality amber gemstones are collected from the Baltic Sea. About 90% of the world's best amber is extracted from the Sambian mines located at the Kaliningrad Oblast of Russia in the Baltic Sea. Pieces of amber torn from the seafloor, known as the “blue earth” are cast up by currents and waves, and collected by hand, dredging or diving. Elsewhere, amber is mined in open works and underground galleries. Amber occurs in so many colors it compliments almost any color of clothing, it can also have smoky, or opaque swirls, or even have iridescent microscopic water droplet inclusions trapped within. Descriptive words include: banana, ivory, butter, milky, lemon, butterscotch, sunny, greenish, custard, honey, cognac, molasses, orange, brown, cherry, and black. The rarest colors of natural amber are blue, black, green, cherry, white, and "kumst" (sauerkraut with brownish-yellow clouding). Amber’s golden transparency lends it a quality which even diamonds do not share. The fascination and attraction to amber, with its earth-tone colors in jewelry, continues to soar in popularity today. Tree resin has to endure and undergo several stages of processing over millions of years, before it becomes Amber. The facts these natural processes caused a once liquid resin to harden so much it can be ground, cut, and polished is astonishing! Natural Baltic amber is a living stone, having not yet ended.
