About Amber and Baltic Amber: Amber is the preserved resin of prehistoric trees that grew tens of millions of years ago. Often classified as a semi-precious stone, this hardened organic substance has over 200 descriptive names, over 65 shades of colors, a variety of transparencies, and no one piece is ever alike. Despite such a large range, the most common specimen is a golden-brown and semi-opaque object that will infrequently contain inclusions. Inclusions in amber are classified as anything embalmed (preserved) in the hardened resin. Amber, which is a fossil itself, is often held in the same class as semi-precious stones as turquoise and jade because of its ornamental uses however, amber is not mineralized. Most amber existing today is approx. 30-90 million years old. Amber has a deep fascination for people both as a gem and as a chance to look back into the past with remarkable clarity. Its warm lustrous touch beguiles us and the remarkable inclusions sometimes found within captures our imagination. Amber (resinite) is the common name for fossilized tree resin from ancient forests, which has been appreciated for its inherent and interesting mixture of colors and natural beauty since Neolithic times. Amber is not produced from tree sap, but rather from plant resin. Sap, is fluid circulating through a plant's vascular system, while resin is the semi-solid amorphous organic substance secreted in pockets and canals through epithelial cells of the plant as a protection mechanism. This aromatic resin can drip from and ooze down trees, as well as filling internal fissures, trapping debris such as seeds, leaves, feathers, and insects. The resin becomes buried and fossilized via a natural polymerization of the original organic compounds. Volatile terpenes in resin evaporate and dissipate under natural forest conditions, leaving nonvolatile terpenoid fractions to become fossilized if they are stable enough to withstand degradation and depositional conditions. The fossil resin becomes incorporated into sediments and soils, which over millions of years change into rock such as shale and sandstone. Having taken tens of millions of years to process, polymerization is all but complete and all of the potentially damaging volatile oils have dissipated to eventually produce fossilized amber. Copal is resin that has matured only to the point of hardening, but despite similar appearances to amber, it has only undergone partial polymerization and still contains volatile terpene oils. Copal should never be used in conjunction with the word Amber; Copal is NOT true Amber, but an immature resin! Although a specific time interval has not been established for resin to become amber, the majority of amber is found within Cretaceous and Tertiary sedimentary rocks (30-100 million years old). The presence of insects in amber was noticed by Pliny the Elder (23-79AD) and led him to the correct theory that at some point, amber was in a soft liquid state to cover bodies of insects. Hence, he gave it the expressive name of succinum (gum-stone), a name still in use today to describe succinic acid as well as Succinite, the term for Baltic Amber. Tibetans had perhaps the most beautiful name for amber; po-she, which meant perfumed crystal. Baltic amber contains 3%-8% Succinic acid, which distinguishes it from all other types of amber. Succinite's hardness is between 2.0-2.7, which is greater than many other fossil resins and a specific gravity varying from 1.05 to 1.10. It can’t be affected by alcohol, is not very hard (hard as a fingernail), it will rather turn black and burn than melt, it is warm to touch and produces static electricity if rubbed, and its luster is resinous and appears transparent to translucent to opaque. Commonly, cloudy and opaque amber is known as "bony” amber, owed to its millions of minute bubbles inside. There is no one tree responsible for producing Baltic amber, studies show it's closely related to broad-leafed conifers of the Araucaria, in the family Araucariaceae. Amber is found all over the world however, the largest deposits are from the Baltic Sea region and the Dominican Republic, being the second largest producer. Industry professionals agree the best specimens used for gem quality amber gemstones are collected from the Baltic Sea. About 90% of the world's best amber is extracted from the Sambian mines located at the Kaliningrad Oblast of Russia in the Baltic Sea. Pieces of amber torn from the seafloor, known as the “blue earth” are cast up by currents and waves, and collected by hand, dredging or diving. Elsewhere, amber is mined in open works and underground galleries. Amber occurs in so many colors it compliments almost any color of clothing, it can also have smoky, or opaque swirls, or even have iridescent microscopic water droplet inclusions trapped within. Descriptive words include: banana, ivory, butter, milky, lemon, butterscotch, sunny, greenish, custard, honey, cognac, molasses, orange, brown, cherry, and black. The rarest colors of natural amber are blue, cherry, black, green, white, and "kumst" (sauerkraut with brownish-yellow clouding). Amber’s golden transparency lends it a quality which even diamonds do not share. The fascination and attraction to amber, with its earth-tone colors in jewelry, continues to soar in popularity today. Tree resin has to endure and undergo several stages of processing over millions of years, before it becomes Amber. The facts these natural processes caused a once liquid resin to harden so much it can be ground, cut, and polished is astonishing! Natural Baltic amber is a living stone, having not yet ended. Care and Cleaning Tips: Following some handling rules will keep your amber jewelry enjoyable for many years to come. The #1 Rule: Always apply your perfume and hairspray before putting on your amber jewelry (Last On, First Off). 2. Avoid strong solutions, household cleansers, soaps, detergents, jewelry pastes or liquid cleaning solutions. 3. Do Not Use ultrasonic or steam cleaners. 4. Avoid exposure to extreme hot or cold or sudden changes of temperature and prolonged exposures in direct sunlight. 5. Never wear jewelry during strenuous exercise or physical activities. 6. Wrap in a soft cloth, store and separate to prevent touching other metals or materials; storing in a dry, cool, and airtight place is best. 7. Clean in lukewarm (never hot!) water using a mild soapy solution, dry with a flannel cloth. 8. Polish only with dry, clean, flannel cloths. When cleaning silver, keep polishing cloths off the amber. Rub a clean and dry amber piece with clear olive oil, remove excess with soft cloth to restore luster.
