Many Ancient Cultures Believe the Earth Itself Has a Life Force, and That Objects Sourced From Within it Will Retain This Vital Energy. For Oneself or as a Gift, Touchstones Need Only be Felt to Carry the Special Energy and Meaning the Wearer Themselves Impart. While it is Easy to Think that Touchstones are Merely Pebbles, They are in Fact Very Rare. An Overall Wonderful, Gorgeous and Indigenous, Rare and Unique, Natural Energy Pendant That Exudes Pride of Ownership! While Each Touchstone Pendant™ is Carved With a Meaning, the Pebble Itself is the Real Story. The Pebble Itself is a Part of This Earth, a Tacit Connection to the Greater Unfolding That We Are All a Part Of. About New Zealand Whakairo Kowhatu (Rock Carving): The Maori Art is a classic traditional Oceania tribal art. The creative styles and skilled craftsmanship yield objects of great beauty. Made with pride in New Zealand, Touchstone Pendants™ are all individually hand-carved from naturally formed beach pebbles. These Touchstone pebbles come from deep in the core of the Earth, igneous rocks that formed from cooling magma or lava. These 'Rock Artists' wander around for miles along wild and windswept beaches, searching for the perfect shape and color to become an OZROX® or Eco-Rox® pendant. Every pebble is unique, and no two pendants are ever the same. These beach pebbles are not reshaped in any way (except for the carving), they are selected especially for their beautiful natural form. Finding touchstones requires knowledge of local geology, and patience. Walking for hours along the expansive shores, each artist comes back with only a pocket full of suitable stones. Artists look for grain, color, size shape, and type, and all this is before they even pick one up to examine it more closely. The main mountain ranges in both the North and South Islands are made of greywacke and more than 95% of the river boulders that ultimately end up on the Taupo beaches are made of this rock type. Greywacke, a sedimentary rock variety of sandstone is characterized by its hardness and dark color. The carvers only select the rarer igneous rocks from amongst the predominant greywacke. Because of this, it takes an average of three months training before an artist is ready to even begin collecting. Most beach stones have been washed down a river and tumbled in the surf, and are already round and smooth and naturally polished. Every pebble is collected by hand, and images are applied individually by the artist to every pebble, to suit the particular shape color and grain. No two are ever the same. The carvers are not production workers. They are also not looking to make Touchstones which are merely 'good enough', for this would not carry the spirit of these pieces. They are always seeking, with every item produced, to make the best Touchstone that has ever been made. This is their ever elusive but steadfast aim and it is why, with every passing day, that Touchstones continue to get more and more beautiful. The Maori are well known for the spiritual and symbolic meanings behind all of their carvings. Every Touchstone Pendant™ Purchased Plants a Rainforest Tree: Our rainforests are home to some of the most fragile and beautiful creatures on Earth, and every year we seem to feel more powerless to prevent their habitat from shrinking. But it is not too late, the one gift we can all offer is awareness, and an ongoing quest to join others to find all those small things which together make a big difference. OZROX® and Eco-Rox® are a part of a bigger vision. They are at first committed to planting a rainforest tree for every Touchstone Pendant purchased. OZROX® and Eco-Rox® directly supports the Rain Forest Rescue organization. Once they get going however, their aim is also to be able to sponsor the Taronga Foundation, where every donation is matched by the NSW State Government, for the protection of critically endangered species. We belong here. This planet is our home. We are a natural part of it, but it does not belong to us. We are just a tiny part of an enormous and interconnected web of life. No matter how it came to be, the only thing we really need to know about it is this, participation is compulsory. This Earth and our own future cannot be separated. To be a part of this great unfolding is to be entirely dependent upon it, and ultimately upon all the other musicians which make up this great symphony of life. Perhaps the most sensitive of all our companions are the frogs. Even the smallest changes in the quality of water can tip the fragile balance for an entire frog species. So when an ecosystem fails, the frogs are often the first to go. And so they act as a warning signal, a kind of environmental touchstone in this sense. By vanishing they tell us that something is wrong. Some would say we have more pressing issues to address. But even if you take the most selfish perspective it is not the frogs themselves we need to be concerned about, as beautiful as they are, it is what their decline represents. They are a watchtower. Their increasing absence now is the first sign of a far deeper concern. They are the ambassadors of ecological balance, a symbol of a sustainable future. They are not saying that they need us. They are saying that we need them. What can we do? It really isn't difficult to help open the way for nature to restore balance and harmony. But all too often our actions feel wasted if it is only us who takes a stand. We need to be part of some greater event. Look closely, however, and you will see that all positive actions begin with the same primary ingredient - Awareness. The seeds of collective change will be planted and nurtured in the soil of individual awareness. In the end, this is all that it might take. Sooner or later a great restoration will arise. And no matter what form it takes it will ultimately need to be supported at a grass roots level if it is to be effective. Planting a tree is not just a symbolic act. Did you know, on average, a single broad leaf tree will absorb in the region of approx. 1 ton of carbon dioxide during its life-time. Meaning that if the average person planted seven trees per year they would be completely carbon neutral. Habitat destruction is also of equal importance to the survival of many endangered species. In its life-time every tree will also be home and shelter to countless different species of bird, insect and reptile as part of an extremely sophisticated and dynamic process of interdependency. Trees make forests, and forests set the stage for the entire drama of life to occur. Taupo and Mt. Tongariro, North Island, New Zealand: Taupo has a population of approx. 22,500. The name Taupo comes from Maori Taupo-nui-a-Tia. Literally translated, it means "The great cloak of Tia" where Tia is the name of the discoverer of the lake. From violent volcanic origins to the settlement of Maori and European people, the Taupo region has deep cultural significance and has many examples of historic and contemporary Maori culture. Lake Taupo was created by a massive ancient volcanic eruption around 186AD, and the region is full of natural thermal springs and bubbling mud pools. It is said that the huge eruption turned the skies of Europe and China into a fiery red. The Maori arrived in the region about 700 years ago. For the Ngati Tuwharetoa iwi that became the region’s dominant tribe, it was a harsh existence where the unfertile ashy soil made it difficult to grow kumara (sweet potato) and the lake was a poor food source. Taupo Township was officially created in 1868 with the establishment of an armed constabulary post, however it wasn’t until the 1950s, when land was cleared and fertilized, that the region began to flourish. Lake Taupo is New Zealand's largest lake, source of spectacular Huka Falls, and center of an active volcanic region where geothermal energy bursts through the earth's thin crust. Lake Taupo, the "North Island’s Heart", according to Maori legend, is the largest fresh water lake in Australasia. Huka Falls, New Zealand's most visited natural attraction, are on the Waikato River just north of Lake Taupo. Touchstones are the igneous rocks formed by volcanic cooling that originate from within the lake. The Waikato River is the transporter of these rocks that undergo natural tumbling and polishing along their journey downstream to eventually end their momentum at the beaches of Taupo’s shores.
