There are locations where electricity cannot be installed or where the cost is not feasible. Most
City or County codes require that new landscape have to be installed on medians, islands and in parking lots. Irrigation Designer has to come up with a way to water and maintain these areas. To save man hours the Irrigation Designer uses Battery Controllers for these types of sites. These Controllers use 6, 9 and 12 volt batteries for their operation. Types of Battery controllers: Irritrol – IBOC, Toro – DDCWP, RainBird – TBOS.
Examples: Orlando City parks and Green Spaces: Willow Park – (2) IBOC, Princeton Islands – IBOC and DDCWP, Constitution Green – IBOC and Edgewater Drive Streetscapes – IBOC and DDCWP.
The majority of all City Parks and Green spaces use convention controllers; these controllers use electricity for their source of power. They have the ability to run 1 to 200 zones and have more options than any battery controller.
Examples: Hunter Pro-C, Toro – TMC- 212 and TMC - 424 Custom Controllers, Irritrol – Rain Dial and Total Control, Rain Bird – ESP and ESP Module
The third type of controller and the most advance is the Central Control System: These controllers allow programming from a single computer location, saving time and money traveling from site to site. Program changes to multiple controllers across multiple sites can be made in just minutes. Irrigation run-time can automatically be adjusted with the addition of a weather station or sensors. Run water usage reports with historical comparison.
Examples: Lake Eola, Loch Haven Park, Green Wood Wet Lands and Lake Under Hill Park.
Controllers: Motorola / Control Port
Multiple Communications: radio, telephone, fiber optics cellular and Ethernet.
Private Sector: Contract to make repairs on shopping centers; this work was done after-hour and weekends.
1. Highlands Plaza Shopping Center: Repair broken sprinklers
2. Indrio Crossing: System neglected for 5 to 7 years. Rewire pump, installed new
10HP 3 Phase Mag Starter Nema 4X, all new 3 phase wiring , CA – 220 CON
Air Tank. Pump run test suction and discharge line. Ten out of twenty one 2”
valves work; wires took direct lighting hit in parking lot. It would cost thousands
of dollars to cut concrete and run new wire from the back of the parking lot the
front of the center. Replace the existing valves with new 2”inch valves and
use the Rain Bird TBOS to control each new section.
3. Crosswind Center: Installed new deep well, new Hunter Controller,
a. Trace all electric valves;
b. Replace old valves and broken sprinklers
4. Semoran Shopping Center:
a. Replace existing controller with new Hunter ICC Controller
b. Replace broken electric valves and sprinklers.
Private Sector: Contract to design and install irrigation for Apostolic Church of Jesus in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
This is just some of the experience our company brings to the table; our job is to make each project a dream come true.
