NEW NADIR / ME & THE OTHERS – Uncovered (Feathered Apple, Switzerland) LP
One of the most interesting musical excavations in recent years. Originally recorded in August 1967 in Erlenbach, Switzerland, the five tracks here by the New Nadir offer a tantalizing glimpse at the sound and vision of this obscure UK psych-rock outfit. The dynamic “People Are Changing” and “I Need Her Now” are archetypal freakbeat tracks with fast-moving bass runs, crisp drum fills and tight harmonies, while “Black Snow” is an innovative Indian-flavored psych piece.
The New Nadir were lead singer and guitarist Ed Carter, bass player Gary Thain, and drummer Peter Dawkins. Carter would later join the Beach Boys, Thain went on to Uriah Heep, and Dawkins would become a successful record producer. Prior to the New Nadir, Thain and Dawkins had been in Me & the Others, along with lead guitarist Dave Chapman and singer, rhythm guitarist and organist Paul Muggleston, a band that had originally formed several years earlier in New Zealand. The other side of the LP features a some cool live tracks by Me & the Others, along with a 1966 studio recording, “Love is Not A Game,” a fantastic raga-flavored freakbeat number.
This is an outstanding package with great photos and three inserts with more pix and liner notes. (Get their full story in Ugly Things #30!)
